The Blonds Fall 2011: Season of the Dragon Posted: 17 Feb 2011 06:46 PM PST I got a whole lotta butt crack in my face last night at The Blonds show, and that wasn't even the most memorable part. In an effort to one-up the spectacle that the duo always deliver (take Betsey Johnson's show; add speed), Amanda Lepore donned a red mesh dress that gave new meaning to the word cheeky. It also made sitting behind her a less than boring pre-show experience. But, of course, she was outdone. After all, this is the duo that dresses Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, and Adam Lambert, among others. The Blonds do costumes, not clothes, and accordingly, they always find a way to showcase their creations in more of a performance than a presentation. Anna Sui Fall 2011: Dapper Dandies in Mouse Hats Posted: 17 Feb 2011 03:37 PM PST For fall 2011, Anna Sui did her usual mod, pop, boho, circus, Portabello Road, Sgt. Pepper thing. But when you’ve got a good thing going, why mess with it? Prints were a swirly, mod and optic, and of course, the requisite paisley. Dresses were mini school girl inspired frocks with Peter Pan collars and floor length boho numbers with peasant blouse necklines. The collection started off black and white and then there were shots of lime green and then every color under the sun followed. Best part? Smiling models (as in Coco, Karlie, Arizona and more superstars) in mouse hats that one-upped Opening Ceremony’s Wild Things collection. Nordstrom Buys HauteLook for $270 Million Posted: 17 Feb 2011 02:42 PM PST A little biz news to shake up fashion week: Nordstrom has just announced that they are acquiring private flash sale site HauteLook for an estimated stock value of $270 million. Considering HauteLook’s four million members (as of June this past year Gilt only had around three million but is valued at over 400 million), it’s not for a huge amount of money, but it’s significant nonetheless. Here’s why: The deal marks the first instance of a big brick-and-mortar retailer buying a private flash sale site. Big retailers like Nordstroms make a lot of money through outlet stores and flash sale sites have become the new outlets, so to stay alive, big retailers have to get in the game–only they lack the infrastructure. Nordstrom didn’t suffer as badly as many other major retailers did during the recession so they’re well placed to make this deal. It’s a good deal for HauteLook, too. While they sell everything from Omaha steaks to Cartier watches on their site, as part of Nordstrom the site will have access to more brands. 10 Things We Learned at New York Fashion Week: Fall 2011 Posted: 17 Feb 2011 01:26 PM PST 1. Sometimes, Tumblr tumbles. Despite the awesome access the Tumblrs received, including a private party at Donna Karan, breakfast with Nina Garcia, and more, the week’s events were reportedly badly organized. 2. Strippers are the new new thing. From go go girls at Rag & Bone‘s after party to casino hostesses at Karen Walker, topless dancers haven’t been this big since Striptease. 3. If you are under 21, you can still DJ an over-21 party. Thanks for the lesson in NY State law, Tavi. Christian Cota Fall 2011: Haute Hiking Posted: 17 Feb 2011 12:35 PM PST For Christian Cota‘s fall 2011 collection he strayed a bit from the bias cut, painted print evening gowns he’s become known for, and drew on his own experience hiking as the inspiration for this more practical, technical collection. (He also cited “seventies-era rock climbers in California, Alpine ski style, Colonial explorers, early twentieth century female mountaineers conquering the great peaks of the Andes and Himalayas, and Traditional Tibetan costume,” as influences.) Jeremy Scott Fall 2011: Manic Panic Posted: 17 Feb 2011 12:24 PM PST That crazy neon trend from Spring 2011 is running over into Fall 2011. New York’s resident designer for the club kids of the aughts, Jeremy Scott, presented a collection yesterday that was all shock and awe. Opening with a red tank reading “Enjoy God” in Coke’s signature script with a yellow mini, Scott continued along his rebellious, comedic road for autumn. There was a “Dial a Tee Shirt” tee dress with a real address and phone number, a sequined sports’ jersey mini dress, drug-printed separates, and a new take on Superman’s classic garb. However, the looks sure to make an impact were the neon pink angora sweaters that add just the touch of pizazz our wardrobes need. The show hit a strange note when a cobalt and orange horizontal striped dress came down the runway, the model holding a faux-fur fox in her hand. Was it a dig aat Prada SS11? Or an homage to the master of tricks? Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Narciso Rodriguez Fall 2011: Left Standing Posted: 17 Feb 2011 12:04 PM PST Narciso Rodriguez’s Fall 2011 show was all about new colors and cuts. Rodriguez’s norm–body-con silhouettes and a black and white palette–gave way to looser, 3/4 length garments in a variety of painterly colors. It was a fresh look. A lavender wool tweed jacket and a loosely structured dress that faded from nude to red are sure to be big sellers in stores. Gray plaids were omnipresent, appearing in dress and suit form. Alex Wang Talks Retail and What it Feels Like to Be Copied Incessantly Posted: 17 Feb 2011 11:52 AM PST Alexander Wang, the wunderkind whose promising knitwear collection has swiftly transformed into a global lifestyle brand, is setting up shop. On Grand Street in SoHo, to be exact, at the old Yohji Yamamoto store, which closed about a year ago. Wang’s new space, which features his women’s, men’s, T, and accessories collections, is airy yet cozy, with a fox fur hammock hanging from the ceiling. Edon Manor’s Ryan Korban designed the space, and you can see his signature in the grey marble and topiary-inspired greenery that accents the room. As for the man himself, Wang seems exceedingly excited about this new endeavor, greeting guests enthusiastically as they arrived at yesterday’s private opening. “The idea has always been kind of burning in the back of our minds, but like every project we do, it has to feel organic. With this store, it was the perfect location,” he told Fashionista. “And at a certain point, in terms of where our product was–we had accessories, we had men’s, we had T–to be able to create a full lifestyle environment was important. The pieces of the puzzle came together. We banged it out in a year and a half.” Regarding the numerous Alex Wang knockoffs popping up in discount and fast fashion retailers almost daily, he’s anything but bitter about it. Michael Kors Fall 2011: Native New Yorker Posted: 17 Feb 2011 10:57 AM PST (Warning: it’s the end of fashion week and I’m sleep deprived and sappy and here is my love letter to Michael Kors.) There are certain things that make you love New York because they’re just so New York. Like a perfectly timed subway transfer, taking in an old movie at Film Forum, flagging down a dim sum cart at Golden Unicorn, digging into a pastrami on rye at Katz’s, or a Michael Kors runway show. Especially his fall 2011 collection, which also happens to mark his 30th anniversary in the fashion world. To celebrate his 30 years in the biz, Kors sent out a collection that embodied his brand of effortless, casual glamor, though there was an emphasis on the ’70s to be sure. Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love,” was the soundtrack, and there were disco sparkles and draped jersey dresses that hinted of Halston. Last Night’s Parties: The Last Frontier, and Harley Turns 23 Posted: 17 Feb 2011 10:27 AM PST Thank goodness today marks the final day of New York Fashion Week, because we are in desperate need of some good old-fashioned zzz’s. Once yesterday evening’s shows wrapped, we headed down to Indochine to celebrate the sixth issue of The Last Magazine at the bar beneath the Lafayette Street eatery. The space was brimming with gorgeous faces–we spied former Last cover girl Anja Rubik among the revelers, as well as industry insiders like Matt Kays, Rumi Neely, and CA Creative’s Alexandra Weiss–and the Kanon Organic Vodka flowed freely. Zara Zachrisson and May Kwok were on DJ duty, and it quickly became clear that the space’s smoky back room housed the designated dance floor while the entryway lounge was strictly for rubbing shoulders with the genetically-blessed. We finally made our way through the Marlboro haze–fresh copies of the glossy’s latest edition in hand–and up to midtown’s Lavo, where a slightly more dressed-down crowd fêted DJ duo Harley Viera-Newton and Cassie Coane’s 23rd birthdays.
