Louise Goldin Fall 2011: Interesting Clothes for Smart Women

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 07:30 AM PST

If Vogue writer Sarah Mower is Louise Goldin‘s muse, as has been suggested in the past by a few British magazines, it’s not surprising. Goldin, whose knitwear skills have been utilized by Donatella Versace, designs for a curvy-but-fit lady who isn’t looking to take shortcuts with her clothes, yet doesn’t want to ever look uncomfortable or put-upon. Sounds like Mower to us, or at least the woman we know via her essays.

Love Is Blind. We Are Not. Buyers’ (and Designers’) Remorse.

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 07:00 AM PST

Which key buyers–as in the ones every designer would kill to have at his/her show–were shut out of several shows on Saturday night due to the clusterfuck at Milk?

Ohne Titel Fall 2011: A Techno Space Odyssey

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 06:30 AM PST

It’s difficult to do an Apollo spacesuit-inspired collection without looking too retro, but Ohne Titel‘s Alexa Adams and Flora Gill pulled moon boots off with aplomb. Maybe it was their figure hugging silhouettes or the feminine flounce on the back of those chiffon dresses, but this afternoon’s runway looked nothing but forward.

Marc Jacobs Fall 2011: Things Aren’t What They Seem

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 05:56 AM PST

Marc Jacobs Fall 2011 Line Sheet Notes:

- vinyl berets with chin straps
- polka dots throughout (even in 3-D incarnations)
- movement-hindering pencil skirts
- boxy tops, sometimes on backwards
- jabots
- ’40s meets the future
- couture lines
- Marilyn Manson’s “The Beautiful People”
- wedged rubber snow boots

The spiel:

I felt a little crazy after seeing Marc Jacobs fall 2011 show and I think that was the point. The runway was set against a tufted white vinyl padded wall, tufted columns in the same material lined the runway, and line sheets were in red velvet envelopes. At first I thought the set was supposed to conjure up the booth of some swank night club or restaurant from decades past but when the first model out started clomping down the runway at breakneck speed in a backwards polyester shirt and rubber trousers, a stiff round beret secured with cashmere chin strap, and Marilyn Manson’s “The Beautiful People” began to play, I started to think the padded walls were more asylum-chic than anything else.

Thom Browne Fall 2011: Get Thee to a Nunnery

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 07:30 PM PST

When Long wrote about Thom Browne’s menswear show in January, I felt a pang of jealousy: Would I ever experience such a magical runway? Full of such grandeur and specialness?

While his women’s presentation wasn’t as extravagant as the wild supper he put on in Paris, Browne did show the whole of New York Fashion Week up by creating a convent in the middle of the New York Public Library. Guests were asked to line up against one wall as two boys knelt at a makeshift altar, humming something those of us without religion only know as hymns. Soon enough, the altar boys greeted a set of nuns in full dress and incredibly thick and long false eyelashes, removing their habits one-by-one to reveal plaid suiting, cocoon dresses, stripy yankee doodle skirts, a fur-accented swing coat, and an It-bag-in-the-making. (It’s essentially a square briefcase in black with gold hardware. And you’re going to want it. Badly.)

Cushnie Et Ochs Fall 2011: Xena the Native American Warrior Princess

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 07:00 PM PST

Citing a trip out west as inspiration, designers Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs created a collection worthy of a fierce Native American chieftess. Feathers extending from slick buns acted as accessory to sexy form fitting black dresses with cutouts and elastic cording, as well as flaired trousers paired with leather tops.

Thakoon Fall 2011: Prints at the Plaza

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 06:22 PM PST

For his fall collection, Thakoon Panichgul juxtaposed the luxury and opulence of the fashions of Versailles and the vibrancy and prints from the tribes of Africa. And what better local to show the collection than New York’s own palace, the Plaza Hotel?

From the gate, Panichgul’s royal blue and orange plaid puffer jackets, asymmetrical dress, and peplum skirt brought life to the ornate ballroom. There were red velvet booties fit for Louis XIV, and trains and ruffles that we could picture a modern Marie Antoinette in. The designer’s tribal influence was imagined in long printed vests, red and black striped cropped pants, and colorful chokers.

Theyskens’ Theory Fall 2011: Building on an Idea

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 04:00 PM PST

Whether it’s because of his short-but-storied past or undeniable talent, Olivier Theyskens has brought a new excitement to New York fashion.

Maybe it’s simply because he’s creating signature looks on a mid-level marketing exec’s budget.

His latest capsule collection for Theory, where he is the brand’s new creative head, was both wearable and directional, without losing site of his new vision for the label.

Preen Fall 2011: Cut and Paste, Add Prints

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 03:30 PM PST

For fall 2011, Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, picked up where they left off last season, chopping apart tailored menswear and attaching it to softer more feminine pieces. It sounds clunky but it wasn’t. The tops of tailored pants were stitched onto longer tulip skirts, and the backs of dresses looked like men’s blazers, pocket slits included. Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi added color to a mostly navy and slate palette with a multicolor geometric print that looked like Escher-meets-Spirograph (remember those?) on silk tops and cropped knits. Prints gave way to heavy beading at the end of the show that covered the fronts of dresses and blouses like mold growing in a petri dish, only, you know, in a cool fashion-y way.
