Carven’s Guillaume Henry Spins Gold Out of Polyester

Posted: 09 Feb 2011 07:00 AM PST

Guillaume Henry, the handsome designer behind the revival of French couture house Carven, just ended a whirlwind trunk show tour of the US, visiting Barneys New York locations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and yesterday afternoon, the store’s Madison Ave flagship. This was the first time he’s been able to meet his American customers, a rabid fan base that has grown rapidly since the label relaunched at a contemporary price point in Spring 2010. (A quick fashion history lesson: Carven began as a Paris couture house in 1945, known in the 1950s for dressing royals.)

“What’s interesting is that they all wear Carven so differently in each city,” he told Fashionista yesterday. “They all want different things.”

And thus far, Henry’s been able to deliver, with a mix of refined wardrobe basics inspired by 1950s couture, the era in which Carven was initially so popular. “Many of the shapes we use–the cocoon shape, the ballerina–are from that time. But we’ve updated them to look modern,” he says. “Mrs. Carven wanted to be cool, and she was, but what was cool then is different from what is cool now. We want our clothes to be right for now.” So while he’s taken a peek into the archives to understand who the Carven lady was, those looks don’t entirely define who she currently is.

As for how the house is able to bring couture-like garments down to a contemporary price point?

This week, fashion designer Behnaz Sarafpour celebrates 10 years of her namesake collection. We recently sat down with the designer to reflect on the last decade–from the paint splatter dresses that put her on the map to her work with the Alexander Calder Institute–and speculate on what’s to come. Rachel Zoe’s Oscar Fee For Anne Hathaway Is “Astronomical”

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 02:11 PM PST

Ever since news broke that Anne Hathaway would host the Oscar’s our thoughts turned immediately to her dress changes and what Rachel Zoe, who has been her stylist since she did The Devil Wears Prada, would choose for the actress.

Even though Zoe is nearly eight months pregnant and wasn’t able to travel to Paris to attend the couture shows we’re sure she’ll pull this off with plenty of (possibly altered) couture. But her super star styling skills come at a cost.

It’s no surprise that Zoe commands a hefty fee, but Merle Ginsberg at The Hollywood Reporter has it on good authority from a source inside the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences that what Zoe is charging Hathaway is “astronomical.” She continues, “[Zoe's fee] hovers near the expenditures of what designer and longtime Nicole Kidman stylist L’Wren Scott spent on the show in 2000 as Oscar fashion coordinator. Scott had orchestra trumpeters wearing custom Donna Karan!”

How Do You Take Your Tea? A Roundup Of Tea-Infused Fragrances

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 01:49 PM PST

Tea isn't a new note in perfume, but it definitely seems to be picking up steam as a fragrance trend. (Bad tea pun. Sorry.) As tea shops become more and more ubiquitous and tea is increasingly touted for its healthy effects, it makes sense that it's popping up in non-potable form.

Jean-Claude Ellena is generally credited for starting the tea-as-fragrance craze. He created a scent made of jasmine and violet leaf tea and used it to perfume Bulgari jewelry stores. This morphed into several successful tea scents for Bulgari.

Tea is a subtle fragrance that blends well with more traditional notes to produce fragrances that smell really light and modern.

Click through to see what’s brewing. (I really can’t help myself. Sorry.)

Watch Bryanboy Sleep, Drink, Sit Front Row at New York Fashion Week

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 11:15 AM PST

The ever-charming Bryanboy has always been one of our favorite personal style bloggers. Evidently, Kanon Organic Vodka finds him just as charming as we do–or even more so. They’re going to film him for 24 hours straight on February 16 during New York Fashion Week to, “give viewers a first hand look into what it's like to rub elbows with fashion's elite, from Alexander Wang to Anna Wintour,” and viewers will be able to tweet him questions. Bloggers are usually mum on their income, but Bryanboy previously revealed to New York that he makes over $100,000 a year on appearances and through ads. Wonder how much Kanon is shelling out for 24 hours of his time?

And if you needed any further encouragement to tune in to Bryanboy’s New York Fashion Week adventures, here’s some footage of him from last season, clad head to toe in Givenchy couture (the same blazer Carine Roitfeld wore that same season). “Happiness is one hair flip away,” he says. At least we know he’s good with the one-liners. Check it out.

Ideeli Ups Fashion Profile By Sponsoring Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Hosting 8 Days Worth of New York Designer Deals

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 10:32 AM PST

Ideeli launched back in 2007, and this is the second season the flash sales site is officially sponsoring Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Along with a slew of guest contributors adding fashion-centric editorial content to the e-commerce platform, Ideeli will also host a “Design Dreams” giveaway on February 12. The package includes everything an aspiring designer needs to sew his or her first piece: sewing machine, sketch pads, sewing class, and more.

But clearly it’s the deals we’re most excited about. In honor of the week, Ideeli is hosting eight sales featuring designers showing in the tents. (These aren’t looks straight off the runway, but classics from previous collections.) Here’s the schedule:

Making the Most Out of Your Weekend: Invest in Saturday

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 09:29 AM PST

Columbia Business School logo

If you thought an MBA from Columbia was only a possibility for mid-twenty-somethings in finance with two years to spare, think again. Columbia's new EMBA program is offered on Saturdays only, which means you don't have to upend your life or break the momentum of a career you've put time and effort into to attain it. It's the kind of degree that would get you that much closer to your dream job, or at least provide the network to ensure you find it.

It's a program tailor made for busy New Yorkers (perhaps a redundancy) whose careers are just as important as their home life. All it takes to get to that next level is one day a week: Saturday. A day when, let's face it, you might otherwise be shopping or going out to eat or catching up on DVR'ed television. (OK, so this is what we do on Saturdays.) Think of each Saturday (the program lasts for 24 months) as an investment in yourself, your career, or even your family.

And of course, lazy Sunday is still free for sleeping late, lingering brunches, and recharging for the coming work week.

It's all about keeping your balance in New York. And in the city that never seems to stop working, where we commute from home to work to meetings back to home, blackberry in hand, looking up every so often to avoid getting taken down by a cab, it's an important thing to maintain. Click here to learn more.

Exclusive: Behind the Scenes of Levi Curve ID’s Spring Campaign

Posted: 08 Feb 2011 09:08 AM PST

We’ve always been fond of Levi Curve ID’s campaigns–they had us from their inaugural campaign, “All asses are not created equal.” Because Levi’s gets it: we love jeans because they make our asses look awesome and Curve ID’s are specially made to fit your booty whether it’s a “slight curve,” “demi curve,” or “bold curve” (they actually scanned the rears of over 60,000 women across the globe to come up with this formula). What’s more, they’ve recently introduced a fourth fit called “Supreme Curve,” for those bootylicious ladies who could, as my friend from Virginia says, “put a can on it”–it fits lower in the front and higher in the back. And now we’ve got an exclusive peek behind the scenes of their latest campaign. Models with real bums–how refreshing!

While Levi’s Opening Ceremony collab has been grabbing headlines since it was shot by Terry Richardson, this latest campaign was styled by Leslie Lessin, set to music by Black Mountain, and shot on location in NYC.
