Carmen Dell’Orefice Turns 80 Today: A Look Back At Her 66 Year (and Counting) Modeling Career

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 02:37 PM PDT

Supermodel (and we mean that in every sense of the word) Carmen Dell'Orefice turns 80 today. Carmen began her career at US Vogue in 1945 where she was on contract for $7.95 an hour. She even served as muse to Salvador Dali when she was just 13. Today, at 80, she’s still working as a model–she walked at Alberta Ferretti’s Pitti Uomo show and Adrienne Vittadini’s Lincoln Center presentation earlier this year–and she’s living proof that beauty gets better with age. In her 66 year career Carmen has graced the cover of Vogue six times, landed 14 cosmetics campaigns, and was photographed by the greats (Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, and Cecil Beaton to name a few).

Here, to celebrate Carmen’s birthday, a look back at some of her incredible work over the last 66 years.

Michael Kors Resort 2012: Jackie O Goes Surfing

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 12:45 PM PDT

For resort 2012, Michael Kors is sending his girls surfing. Mini dresses resembled wet suits–right down to the big contrast zippers up the front–and full length dresses with thigh high slits were done in neon neoprenes and accessorized with sporty fanny-pack-ish belts. While the color palette–fluoro yellows and hot pinks recalled ’90s LA Gear (at least to me)–the prints and silhouettes were decidedly ’60s. There were bold zebra prints on little shift dresses and sexy one-piece suits. Evening looks–cropped jackets with cropped pants–were coated in gold paint. Kors himself called the collection “surf Jackie,” according to Cathy Horyn. As always, Kors delivers the perfect soundbite, and a pretty perfect collection.

Our Writer Didn’t Wash Her Hair For Six Days and It Looks Awesome

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 12:10 PM PDT

I became giddy with curiosity a few weeks back when reading a piece on Into the Gloss about the beauty escapades of Proenza Schouler's CEO, Shirley Cook. The fashion insider advocated not washing your hair, claiming that in doing so her follicle woes had permanently vanished. She told ITG's Emily Weiss that her tresses "don't get greasy" and in lieu of shampooing she's a fan of Moroccan Oil's miracle treatments. So in an effort to rescue the few salvageable strands of hair on my head–those which haven't been marred by daily attempts at undoing the Jew 'do–I viewed finals week at FIT (where I'm a student) as the perfect opportunity to take "The Shirley Cook Challenge."

Thanks to Weiss and Cook, you too have an excuse not to wash your hair, whether because of laziness, exhaustion, damaged tresses or, like me, all three. Luckily last week's frizzy weather coincided with the 18.5 credits worth of exams I'd be taking, so in the name of research and necessity I put my locks up to Cook's test.

Why TriBeCa’s Tenoverten is the Best Nail Salon Ever

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 11:45 AM PDT

Anyone who’s ever ridden in a cab with me knows that I’m a stickler for good customer service. (I.e., if a driver is incompetent I get real annoyed.) I’m like this about pretty much everything, from restaurants to department stores. (No one–I mean no one–who works at Uniqlo knows where anything is. Unless they’ve been promoted to the +J department. There, I’ve noticed, you can’t be lazy. But I digress.)

Because of my high standards, I never really stick to one place for beauty treatments, particularly manicures, pedicures, and Brazilians. To me, all nail salons are pretty much the same. The people are nice, but you can’t put a tip on a credit card and it’s rare to find a technician with whom you’re so impressed that you make an effort to go see her every week or two.

I was fine bouncing along, getting a manicure whenever I had the time. Until, that is, I discovered Tenoverten, a light-filled loft in New York’s TriBeCa neighborhood.

Watch: Black Swan‘s Darren Aronofsky Directs Jessica Biel in a Revlon Commercial

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 11:15 AM PDT

I bet this Revlon commercial cost sooooo much money. It’s only one minute long and it’s basically just a girl putting on mascara set to music but that girl is Jessica Biel and the music is by Pharrell Williams (who also stars in the ad) and the director (this is the clincher) is none other than Darren Aronofsky. You might know him from directing such critically acclaimed films as Black Swan, The Wrestler and Requiem for a Dream. Laughing all the way to the bank etc., etc., (Via Elle.com)

Rumor: Kanye West is in Paris Designing a Collection for Spring 2012

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 09:44 AM PDT

Fashion breaks Kanye’s heart. He said so himself when he was named “Stylemaker of the Year” by the Accessories Council last year. Since then, he’s become a fixture at fashion shows (even if he had some trouble getting into the shows in Paris this past season), met with folks in the biz for advice on starting a line–like a professor at Central Saint Martins and A.P.C. founder Jean Touitou, and most recently collaborated with famed French graphic design and art direction team M/M to produce a collection of silk scarves.

The rapper obviously takes fashion seriously (I mean, the man performed in spring 2011 Celine at Coachella), so it should come as no surprise that he’s working on a collection in Paris, according to the UK’s Telegraph.

Marquita Pring Chronicles Her Shoot for Vogue Italia‘s Groundbreaking Curves Spread

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Marquita Pring, Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine and Robyn Lawley–all “plus” size models–are the stars of Vogue Italia‘s June issue. Whereas Pring was once relegated to Vogue Italia‘s “curves” section online, this month she’s just another model in a smoldering black and white 10-page Elizabeth Taylor-inspired editorial for the mag shot by Steven Meisel. Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine and Robyn Lawley grace the cover.

“Never before have four curvier girls been in a spread shot by Steven Meisel with no specific purpose at all,” Pring said. “No size issue, no color issue. Just beautiful, normal Italian Vogue.”

Pring kept a diary during the two-day shoot. She chronicled everything–her nerves, emotions, the clothes, the makeup (the makeup artist uses what she calls the “Naomi kit” on Marquita which is usually used for Naomi Campbell), and how it felt to get naked for Steven Meisel–minute by minute.

The shoot, Pring says, was “one of the most incredible experiences of my career/life.” But she almost missed out on it.

Tom Ford on Why He No Longer Works For Money and Why Yves Saint Laurent Hated His Guts

Annoyed with Tom Ford lately? You’ll be in love yet again after taking in this brief CNN interview. He talks about the reason he moved to Europe initially–”I wanted to be marketable globally”–and why Yves Saint Laurent wasn’t a fan of Ford designing YSL: “When I started to get great press and the business became successful, Yves became quite hostile.”

The Daily Nail: Temporary Tattoos for Your Nails

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 07:55 AM PDT

Nail art is going in many different and extreme directions, thanks to the likes of Gaga and cool nail technology. While some of the craziest versions require a salon and a professional, the DIY girl still has tons of options.

Different from Sally Hansen Salon Effects strips and not as bizarre as temporary lip tattoos, BigRuby temporary nail tattoos are an easy way to add a bit of flair without too much commitment. They work just like those tattoos you got in a birthday goody bag when you were a kid: cut out the one you want, press it on your dry nail, wet the backing until the tattoo comes off, then cover with a top coat.

There are six sets available: cosmic, garden, star (our fave), mod, sea, and tweet (cute birds). They're $12 for a pack of 86, and BigRuby also sells a quick drying top coat for $9.95.
