Diane von Furstenberg Resort 2012: On the Street Posted: 07 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT I love the DvF label when it’s a smart interpretation of top trends. I loathe the DvF label when it’s all about boho chic. Luckily, the fashion gods were on my side at yesterday’s presentation of the Diane von Furstenberg Resort 2012 collection, shown in front of a glow-in-the-dark backdrop at the Highline Studios on 15th Street. Posted: 07 Jun 2011 06:20 AM PDT Lady Gaga received the Fashion Icon award at last night’s CFDA Fashion Awards ceremony, and her outfit didn’t disappoint, at least from a visual shock value perspective. She wore a custom Mugler outfit and 24-inch heel-less platforms. The long train on the Mugler proved to be removable, because she accepted her award on stage in a bodysuit with a spiked thong. The bustier was precariously placed, and she managed to flash some nipple on the purple carpet, which we highly doubt was accidental. In her acceptance speech she told the audience, “I can’t believe I’m allowed in here.” She also recounted a story about receiving a text from an “Anna” who she thought was her friend/ Nicola Formichetti‘s assistant, Anna Trevelyan. The text was telling her that she won the Fashion Icon Award. She responded by saying, “Yes, bitch, we did it!” But it wasn’t Trevelyan who texted her; it was Anna Wintour. The editrix’s reply? “That’s lovely.” Also lovely? Gaga’s makeup. We are loving her soft eye makeup without the heavy cat eyes she’s been sporting lately and a dewy face that’s finally free of prosthetics. The Marilyn/Madonna red lips, beauty mark, and dark eyebrows look fantastic with her relatively bare face. And we’re predicting that teal wig will show up in a lot of Gaga costumes this Halloween. Gaga ended the night in her usual flamboyant and mostly naked way, by dancing in a sheer bodysuit, thong, and pasties at an after party. Michael Kors had an idea for how she could really shock next time, telling WWD, “Gray flannels and a camel coat. Now that would be shocking.” Click through to see Lady Gaga’s get-up from all angles. Posted: 06 Jun 2011 04:00 PM PDT As if it wasn't hard enough to just look stylish and not semi-poor at [insert place of work], today you have to attend an event after the usual 10-6 shift. Exciting? Sure. But now you have to dress up without looking out of place in the office. This means heels. But you can't wear them all day and you don't want to lug them around in a big purse at said event and look like a bag lady, rather than one of the stylites who belong there (i.e. were invited and aren't just taking the place of a boss). Shit. Time to utilize that "high/low dressing"… only it's a little different when your low is $2 faux pearls from Salvation Army and your high means something not purchased from a sale rack at Urban Outfitters. You settle for your roommates cool yet surprisingly comfy wedges and jazz up a dress with all necklaces you own and your mother's vintage Gucci belt, the only nice designer thing actually in your possession and which bestows, with it's tiny one-silver-one-gold interlocking G's, a semblance of subtle monied style. Central St. Martins Will Never Die: An Alumni’s Tearful Tribute Posted: 06 Jun 2011 03:30 PM PDT With the much anticipated arrival of summer comes a bittersweet moment as well: The iconic Charing Cross building of Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design (or CSM) is set to shut its historic (and heavy, might I add!) doors at the close of the season, through which have passed some of the most prolific talents in fashion, fine art, film and music: Alexander McQueen, Peter Doig, Sarah Burton, Hussein Chalayan, Hamish Bowles, Anthony Gormley, and M.I.A to name a few. The beloved, well-worn building is, as CSM puts it, is “not easily adapted to keep up with fast changing technology and industry.” It may not be shiny or new–call it stubborn–but some of us like it just the way it is. It has history and charm, which I was fortunate enough to experience while studying Fine Art there for three years. Yes, I may have found myself painting in a puffy down jacket in the dead of winter due to the unreliable heating system in the 3rd floor studios, but that just helped justify lots of tea breaks and Lady Sovereign impersonations. Sneak Peek: Pour La Victoire’s First-Ever Ad Campaign Shot by Frances Tulk Hart Posted: 06 Jun 2011 02:47 PM PDT Pour La Victoire is one of those brands that we see from time to time in stores, and like, but don’t really see in the press or know much about. The always cute and affordable shoe and handbag brand is aiming to change all that with the launch of their first-ever ad campaign and e-commerce site, both of which are seriously striking our fancy. The Fall 2011 campaign was styled by Beth Fenton and shot by stylist-turned-photographer Frances Tulk Hart at the glamorous St. Regis hotel in NYC. We’ve never gotten the urge to stand in front of a hotel fire place in red pumps, underwear and a blazer, holding a bunch of leather bags, but after seeing these shots, it seems that nothing could be more glamorous and fall-like. Vera Wang Posted More on Facebook Than Any Other Fashion Brand in May 2011 Posted: 06 Jun 2011 02:30 PM PDT There’s no doubting fashion labels are pretty obsessed with their Facebook pages, from DKNY’s pre-order opportunities to Dolce & Gabbana’s live streaming. But according to data compiled by fashion marketing firm Stylophane, Vera Wang might take the cake for most active fashion brand on Facebook. Cacharel Attempts to Revamp With New Designers Ling Liu and Dawei Sun Posted: 06 Jun 2011 02:17 PM PDT French brand Cacharel has had its fair share of designers rotating through the creative chair over the past 10 years or so. Founded in 1962, they pioneered the seersucker blouse on a 1963 Elle cover, are praised for their work with Liberty of London, and have put out a large range of successful perfumes (notably Anais Anais, whose campaign starred Kate Moss). Yet these deep roots seemed to wither in the new millennium and the company has since struggled through a revolving door of artistic directors. Lauren Conrad and Kim Kardashian Are Among Glamour‘s Top Sellers Posted: 06 Jun 2011 01:30 PM PDT Glamour is having an unusually slow year, WWD is reporting. Apparently, we ladies just aren’t grabbing the Condé glossy off of newsstands as frequently as we used to. Editor-in-Chief Cindi Lieve told WWD that her and her editorial team are "1,000 percent focused on it." They even had a big off-site meeting to try to “wrap their heads around it.” Their conclusion? It’s all about the cover–and not the headlines–because women only spend an average of 1.7 seconds looking at magazine covers and that is not enough time to read headlines. Their focus is on the cover stars, and, so far, reality TV stars = newsstand sales. Lauren Conrad‘s May 2010 cover was their biggest selling of the year and Kim Kardashian is the best seller of 2011 so far. However, Lieve believes Glamour‘s upcoming July issue, for which Blake Lively graces the cover, might even outsell the Kardashian. “I have hopes that Blake Lively's nude picture scandal will put her over the edge. Just kidding, Blake.” Of course, Lieve is probably right and not kidding at all. Posted: 06 Jun 2011 11:05 AM PDT When a business model is successful, people want to copy it. This trend seems especially rampant in the fashion industry. For every Gilt Groupe there is a Rue La La; for every Toms, there’s a Bob’s, etc. One of the most recent examples of this is Eyefly, whose business model is eerily similar to that of online eyewear shopping start-up Warby Parker, who produces affordable designer-quality eyewear and, for every pair of glasses purchased, gives one pair away to someone in need. Watch Jessica Stam Sprint in Stilettos in This Terry Richardson-Directed Mercedes-Benz Commercial Posted: 06 Jun 2011 10:37 AM PDT
The unstoppable Terry Richardson is at it again, this time via Mercedes-Benz. In his commercial for the car maker, Jessica Stam is either a spy making some kind of getaway attempt, or a thief with a vehicle fascination. Either way, she really, really likes this car. Enough to caress it like an extremely beautiful lover. Also, props must be given for busting some serious moves in stilettos and a skin-tight micro-mini dress. Can you roll under a shutting garage door in club wear? Because I sure as hell can’t. The commercial has all the vamped sex appeal of a typical Richardson photo shoot, and though our car usage is limited here in the city, it’s difficult not to want to be Stam’s pedal-to-the-metal femme fatale. Oh, advertising. Sometimes, you really do work. Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
