40 Years of Kenzo: A Colorful Retrospective Posted: 07 Oct 2010 04:00 PM PDT
Kenzo Takada, the founder of the brand, was educated at Bunka in Japan and moved to Paris in the mid-’60s. He was one of the first designers to use models of difference races on the catwalk, and his first success came from garments made out of scraps of African textiles he found at Parisian flea markets. Hermes Spring 2011: Au Revoir, Jean Paul Posted: 07 Oct 2010 01:59 PM PDT
The Spring 2011 collection accurately reflected the essence of the Gaultier-Hermès collaboration: bondage meets horseback riding, provocation meets tradition–and, as always, admirable tailoring, JP style. The show kicked off with full-on horse-riding gear, complete with riding crops, knee high flat boots and jodhpur pants. The models looked like modern-day amazons, with slicked braided hair, structured jackets and a determined walk. A few minutes into the show, upbeat guitar sounds pouring into the soundtrack announced a Spanish element to the collection: large black hats and long, flowy dresses intruded the masculine element of the line. No big surprise there: Gaultier has often used references to Flamenco and Corrida to counterbalance the radical elements of a collection, both for Hermès and his own. The rest of the collection was a play on leather, including harnesses, high-waisted trousers, cardigans à la Jackie Kennedy, and full leather skirts. After the brochette of today's faces, including Karlie Kloss, Coco Rocha and Karolina Kurkova, the last walk was also a bow to Gaultier's career: Farida Khelfa, his muse in the ’80s, came out and boldly marched down, to the claps and cheers of the audience. She was closely followed by Gaultier, who posed with her, a rose between the teeth. We don't doubt Lemaire's ability to live up to Gaultier’s work for Hermès–but let's hope Jean-Paul will now dedicate his time to putting us back into cone bras! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Miu Miu Spring 2011: The Starry Finale Posted: 07 Oct 2010 12:00 PM PDT
Miu Miu finished off Paris Fashion Week and global Fashion Month, and was the last show I’ll see until February. (Unless, of course, some designers get extravagant for Pre-Fall….) It was young (see the starry prints and popsicle colors) it was forward (consider the boxy cut of the leather jackets) and it was pretty (appreciate the red satin dress). There was some ’70s, some ’40s. But above all, there was modernity. And those shoes. I tried to explain them to someone last night. They were tango shoes, but with more straps than the typical Repettos, and they were in wild colors: Neons and metallics. Plus, there was a spectator element to some of them. Believe you me, they’ll be tearing up the editorials come fall. There were stars all over the runway, and in the front row. Dakota, Rihanna, and Alexa were there…so was Mia Wasikowska, looking lovely in Miu Miu, of course. Miu Miu for everyone, I say! Thanks, Miuccia, for closing fashion week with a starburst. It Was Only a Matter of Time: Snooki Says She Wants to Be a Designer Posted: 07 Oct 2010 11:17 AM PDT
"I wanna be a clothing designer, hair designer,” Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi told OK!. She also said she wanted to have “you know, four guido/guidette babies” but that is beside the point. Bring on the rhinestone encrusted sunglasses, the matted bunny slippers and Snooki-branded bumpits! Though lately, Snooki’s style seems to getting a bit tamer (her hemlines haven’t dropped, thank goodness). She’s toned down the poof in favor of bangs and a sleeker less-sprayed mane. And at her latest appearance at the FantaSea Yacht Club in Marina del Rey for the launch of some beauty product called “Beautiful Eyes” (it was classy event, Aubrey O’Day was there), she looked the part in an enormous polo match-style hat that she nearly disappeared under. Angelina is now the only Jersey Shore cast member who hasn’t either created or talked of creating her own clothing line. Maybe, as per her nickname, it will be made of trash bags? Rumor Mill: Stefano Pilati is Out at YSL? Posted: 07 Oct 2010 10:00 AM PDT
Now the New York Post, via Fashion Wire Daily, reports that Spring 2011 might really, truly, be the end of the road for Pilati. But the collection was undeniably strong. And the shoes will certainly be a best-seller. So we think he still has more time. However, if Pilati is leaving, who will succeed him? Riccardo Tisci has popped up in the past, but we think that’s an unlikely scenario. Now Olivier Theyskens is the name on every tongue. Sure, Theysken’s collaboration with Theory means he’s learning to create more commercial clothes, but his aesthetic is just so frilly, so goth. Not YSL at all. You know who would be good? Proenza Schouler. They missed out on the Valentino gig a few years ago, but that’s okay. They’re ready now. And they create the kind of clothes that the YSL customer wants: Wearable, sophisticated, and forward at once. Let’s start a Proenza to YSL campaign! (If, in fact, the rumors prove true.) Jil Sander for Uniqlo: Uniqlo’s J+ collaboration hits stores today. Racked NY was on the scene and the hot ticket is the outerwear. {Racked NY} Christina Hendricks Thinks Karen Elson’s a Copycat: Harper’s Bazaar covergirl Christina Hendricks claims she’s responsible for Elson’s red locks as well as her success. “I was in Milan, and you would see the same girls at castings. There was one girl—she was like, ‘I can’t get any work. I’m so sick of this, I’m ready to quit. I love your hair color. What do you color your hair with?’ and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s red. Here’s my formula.’ It was Karen Elson. A couple of weeks later, she had bright-red hair…Sorry, Karen, but you did ask about my hair color. Then I saw her on the cover of Italian Vogue, and the rest is history!” {Harper’s Bazaar} The WSJ‘s Top Ten From Fashion Month:The Wall Street Journal has assembled their top ten from the past month. “Best Killer Pumps” goes to Jil Sander and “Biggest Sigh of Relief” goes to Alexander McQueen. {WSJ} This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
