Katy Perry’s Fragrance Campaign Revealed (And Other Celeb Fragrance News)

Posted: 15 Oct 2010 07:03 AM PDT

Katy Perry is not known for subtlety, so I was not expecting an artsy black and white image for her Purr fragrance campaign. True to her campy form, she is posing as a cat. A pink and lavender, latex-clad, stripper-heeled kitty cat. With a giant pink ball of yarn.

The ad was shot by Miles Aldridge and is meant to complement the design of the Purr bottle which will be shaped like a lavender cat with jeweled eyes and metallic accents. The message here is quite clear. No abstract art for Katy. Meow.

In other celeb fragrance news, Beyonce is releasing her second scent, called Heat Rush, which will hit stores in February 2011. It’s intended to be a less sexy, more daytime-appropriate scent than her original Heat, according to WWD. Beyonce’s first scent was in the top ten of new launches, and she is expected to hit $150 million in retail sales, putting her in the same gilded ballpark as fellow diva-turned-perfumier, Jennifer Lopez.

And finally, news that makes me think ANYONE can launch a scent: Kate Walsh, formerly of Grey’s Anatomy and now the star of Private Practice, has created a fragrance line called Boyfriend. After a break-up about five years ago, she was shopping in men’s fragrances because she missed her guy’s scent. She told WWD she had a revelation: “Wait a minute, you don't need a boyfriend to have a Boyfriend! Ding ding ding!”

Her five-piece fragrance line will launch on HSN on November 11 at 8pm EST. The bottle was inspired by Chanel bottles (I hope she checked with her lawyers very carefully on that one!) and has the names of former boyfriends printed on it in ghostwriting. That’s more than a little creepy. If that weren’t enough, Terry Richardson shot the print campaign. The ads will feature Kate lolling on a bed wrapped up in a sheet. The print “Boyfriend” and “Wear Him” will accompany the images.

Again I ask: Who buys these fragrances?

Kate Moss Secretly Got Married This Summer

Posted: 15 Oct 2010 06:21 AM PDT

Kate Moss and Jamie Hince, her boyfriend of three years, tied the knot this summer in a secret wedding in Sicily, the Mirror is reporting.

According to British tab, Kate, 36 wed Kills’ guitarist Jamie, 40, in a very low-key but very romantic ceremony on August 7th that culminated in dancing under the trees ("Minutes after tying the knot, the giggling newlyweds were outside the church, dancing under trees," according to the Mirror’s source). Kate was reportedly barefoot and wore a see-through gown, and her daughter Lila Grace was a ring bearer.

Even though the ceremony was reportedly small with only close friends and family in attendance, after Kate and Jamie got hitched, locals from the town in Sicily joined in on the partying.

More details according to the Mirror’s “source”: "[Kate's] never been one for convention or tradition, but Jamie's been there for her through thick and thin, and she simply felt the time was right. They planned the day for weeks and were so excited. Kate didn't want a stuffy, formal do, but something spiritual.”

Kate’s been on a more wholesome tack lately what with her jam making so maybe this marriage thing will stick.

An Ode To Karlie Kloss’s Walk Of Fame

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 03:17 PM PDT

Eighteen year-old model Karlie Kloss has walked everything from Miu Miu to Versace. Of course, most top models have. But, if anything sets her apart from other models, it’s her famed walk. The walk, which is usually accompanied by her “death stare”, seems to be set to a beat that no one else can hear. As an ode to Karlie and her strut, we’ve assembled her best mid-walk shots from this season.

New Jersey Fashion Week Is A Thing That Happened and Real Housewives of New Jersey Were There

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 02:45 PM PDT

And you thought fashion month was over. Not true! New Jersey’s inaugural fashion week (ahem, NJFW) kicked off this week to showcase emerging designers from the Garden State. "I want people to understand that New Jersey Fashion Week is the next great destination to showcase global emerging talent," Donnella Tilery, the co-founder of NJFW told MSNBC.

While the Jersey Shore crew was a no show (not that they were expected but a girl can only hope for more Snooki, right?), there was a reality TV star presence at NJFW, thank goodness. The Manzo sisters, Caroline and Dina, from the Real Housewives of New Jersey were front row and opened up about Jersey style stereotypes.

“We dare to be ourselves — whatever makes us happy,” big sis Caroline, always reasonable, told Tonic. "I definitely feel the stereotypes,” Dina told MSNBC, “But tonight we'll see the more elegant side of New Jersey."

Hmm…”Elegant” isn’t exactly the word I’d use to describe the near-crotch-revealing numbers that came down the runway at New Jersey Fashion Week. There were also some fun chiffon guys with big bracelet-like rings attached to the trains so you could loop the bracelets over your wrists and make like a bird. But judge for yourself. Or judge from the reactions of the front row which vary from open-mouthed shock (of horror? delight?) to a guy on his cell phone. Here is what NJFW looked like:

Ask Chris Benz: How Do I Become a Hair Stylist For Fashion Shows?

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 11:44 AM PDT

Dear Chris,

I so badly want to work as a celeb hair stylist and style hair for fashion shows. I am a recent Paul Mitchell Grad who worked very hard to be where i am at today. I’m 25 and a single mother of one, but I refused to let anyone or anything tear me down. I was determined to finish school no matter what cause i knew if i was able to finish cosmetology school, endless opportunities would come. I understand that I don’t know it all and I’m hungry for more knowledge every day. I would love it if you could help me out and share with me some tips to reach my goals!

Thank you,
Lawanika

Dear Lawanika,

You sound like you have the best sort of dedication a person can have. The best you can do in this life is work very hard, be nice, and learn something new everyday.

I think you have carved out a very positive path for yourself. Obviously, hairstyling—and particularly celebrity hairstyling—is a very competitive field. I have said this before an I will say it again to you, I really encourage everyone despite their location, to start a personal blog highlighting your specific vision and point-of-view. Upload pictures, inspiration, anything that speaks to your creativity!

In addition, really reflect on who the people are that you respect and admire, and who you would dream of modeling your career after. Everyone's story and path is different, and much success comes from determination. Send your books to all of these people with a lovely note, and often times your book will land smack dab in front of them.

Research and read everything you can about all sorts of design, don't pigeon-hole yourself into only researching hair, because the references stylists use to create new, inventive styles are often based in a million disparate references none of which might be a past hairstyle.

Your attitude is right, and I admire your determination. All the best!

xx

Which top model refused to be street style snapped by the fashion bible during Paris Fashion Week (and even seemed miffed that they deigned to ask)?

Fashion News Roundup: Inside Coco Rocha’s Gramercy Park Apartment, Tim Gunn Hates On Gaga, & Taylor Momsen Covers Revolver Magazine

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 09:51 AM PDT

Coco Rocha’s Really Nice Apartment: As part of Vogue’s APT with LSD series, Lauren Santo Domingo takes us inside the Gramercy Park apartment of model Coco Rocha and her husband, James Conran. As you can probably imagine, there are stunning views, lots of art books, and an amazing closet. {Vogue}

Tim Gunn’s At It Again: Tim Gunn has already shared his thoughts on Anna Wintour. Now it Lady Gaga’s turn. He told Yahoo’s OMG: “Who would want to emulate that? It’s not fashion. Those are costumes.” Really? She’s worn Armani, Gareth Pugh, Jeremy Scott, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana. Aren’t they fashion designers? {Racked}

Revolver is a Magazine That Exists and Taylor Momsen is on the Cover: Taylor Momsen is on the cover of Revolver magazine holding a bunch of, well, revolvers, and wearing black lingerie. We get it, Taylor–you’re tough, you’re old enough to make you own discussions, and you should be allowed to stay out past midnight. Now, go put on some clothes. {Huffington Post}

Lily Cole No Longer A Redhead: The model turned actress has ditched her natural red locks for a more chocolate tone. While I’m all for brunette power, I really liked her red hair. {Modelinia}

Another Ralph Lauren 5th Ave Mansion: Today, Ralph Lauren will be opening their women’s flagship store–a huge 22,000 square-foot Beaux Art building at 888 Madison Avenue that was built from scratch. The new store is right across RL’s men’s flagship store, the Rhinelander Mansion. {WWD}

Hilary Duff to Host Lucky Shops 2010 and More Exclusive Details

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 08:30 AM PDT

For the seventh straight year, Lucky Magazine is turning NYC’s Metropolitan Pavilion into a discount shopping paradise and we got the scoop on this year's deets. More than just a glorified warehouse sale, Lucky Shops 2010 will include cool extras like music, refreshments and giveaways. It will all kick off with a “VIP Shopping Party” hosted by Hilary Duff to celebrate Lucky’s 10th Anniversary and the mag’s new E-I-C Brandon Holley.

The catch? You have to buy tickets, and while it might seem silly to pay to go shopping, it could be worth it if you're willing to make the commitment. The tickets are reasonable, depending on what kind of access you want. Plus, the list of participating designers–which you'll find after the jump–is really good, especially at up to 70% off.

If this all just sounds like an ingenious ploy to get people to pay to get into an event where they'll then feel obligated to spend money, know that the event also benefits Free Arts NYC, which "provides under-served children and families with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs that help them to foster the self-confidence and resiliency needed to realize their fullest potential." 100% of proceeds at the Shopping from the HeART boutique will be donated. The boutique will feature pieces from Donna Karan, Doo.ri, Erin Fetherston and Tibi, as well as clothing, shoes and accessories from stylist Mary Alice Stephenson's personal closet.

Fashion Disaster: Love, Chloé Loves YSL By Mistake

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 07:30 AM PDT

Fashion heads are going to roll over this one.

According to a juicy little tidbit in this morning’s WWD, in the print ads for Chloé's new fragrance, Love, Chloé, Raquel Zimmermann is wearing a YSL belt. That’s YSL, not Chloé, that the face of the fragrance, launched this past September, is wearing. And of course, these are the print ads that have been blown up on billboards. Ruh roh.

I feel horrible for the stylist or whomever is going to take the rap for this one. The blunder is “causing a bit of embarrassment, to put it mildly,” WWD is reporting.
