Isabel Marant Spring 2011: Cool Girls, Unite

Posted: 02 Oct 2010 07:00 AM PDT

PARIS–As I stood under a doorway at Couvent des Cordeliers, the ancient convent in which Isabel Marant held her Spring 2011 runway show, a crowd gathered outside huddled under umbrellas, waiting to enter. Like me, most of the women were wearing Isabel Marant: her classic grey sweatshirt, a tunic, a pair of boots. Unlike me, they were predominantly French, and predominantly cool, mostly because of the way their messy hair was tied up in effortless chignons, and the ease of their sweatsuit ensembles.

Isabel Marant’s clothes embody the modern, cool French woman. And that’s why she’s been such a success in the US. Marant, Vanessa Bruno, Paul & Joe…these are all brands we Americans covet because they allow us to emulate French chic. We’re obsessed, even if our blowouts and J Brand jeans do give away our true nationality.

Ironically, Marant’s spring collection was dedicated to a certain American era: The early ’80s days of hip-hop, when girls wore shrunken baseball jackets, hoop earrings, and mesh netting. Mixed in with these heavily-influenced looks were more classic styles, including a few rugby dresses and some calico floral frocks.

Of course, it was all paired with Marant’s signature heels and boots, sure to sell out as soon as they hit the sales floor.

And for die-hard fans of her sweats, Marant didn’t disappoint. A grey sweatshirt near the end was accented with black leather, sure to be priced at $200 +, and sure to be gone in a blink. Here’s to Isabel Marant for making us all a bit cooler.

Best Dressed: Milan Fashion Week

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 04:00 PM PDT

Milan Fashion Week was high on drama, both on and off the runway. Abbey Lee rocked the sheer trend in real life. Erin Wasson looked sultry in Cavalli. Rachel Bilson kept it casual at Cavalli’s show. Jewelry designer Delfina Delletrez looked lovely at Fendi. And George Clooney was handsome as ever at Armani.

Rick Owens Spring 2011: the prince of darkness does Jedi-chic.

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 03:30 PM PDT

PARIS–Whether you like him or not, Rick Owens, nicknamed “the prince of darkness” by the press, has unarguably invented the neo-Goth: modern, slender, poetic and somber.

This was epitomized in yesterday's show at Paris Palais de Tokyo.

There, he presented an impeccably orchestrated show, which felt straight out of a dark fairy tale. Seemingly inspired by Snow White's wicked stepmother, the models marched down the catwalk with grave faces, hair pulled back into spiked combs. The high ceiling of the museum threw gigantic, theatrical shadows on the walls, emphasizing the Tim Burton-esque atmosphere.

The clothes started off with elongated dresses, halter necks, monochromatic–not just his usual black and white, but off white, cocoa. Long and draped at first, the show progressed into a more cropped silhouettes composed of blunt layers and a repetitive, subtle play on leather. This added a fearsome mercenary feel to the collection, oscillating between ancient Japanese warrior and a Jedi soldiers.

Although the collection remains close to his usual line and flavor, it seems Rick is taking us into another direction this season: more majestic, less urban. Rather, he is proposing a timeless woman, handsome and powerful.

For the Princess Leias amongst you ready to fight an intergalactic couture war, this seems like the ideal gear.

Vogue Paris Turns 90! Gaultier Wants to Get Naughty! Lagerfeld is a No Show! Plus Party Pics You Won’t See Anywhere Else!

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 02:00 PM PDT

PARIS–No need to tell you French Vogue is turning 90. It's been loudly announced throughout the fashion sphere, this month's issue filled with much sought after, limited edition prints.

Now try to imagine a gala to celebrate this, right in the middle of Paris Fashion Week.

Add onto that Eyes Wide Shut as the dress code. The result is dementia, partial nudity and foie gras–very Carine indeed.

The event took place in a private mansion on the Parisian left bank, which had been decorated by birthday cards addressed to Vogue from houses including Chanel, Vuitton and Lancôme. The Stanley Kubrick film the party was referencing was projected onto walls–and almost looked like a documentary of what was going on at that very moment.

And la crème de la crème (literally), was hidden away on the first floor: a cake room, as decadent as elegant, had been filled with a macaroon sculpture, chocolate fountains, and fresh fruit. Needless to say, we picked this as our hangout spot.

As you can imagine, the event drew the upper crust of la mode, from a poofed hair Lara Stone, to Suzy Menkes wearing a sleeping mask. And of course, Carine, the queen of the show, looked like a couture take on the Venice Carnival: sheer, baroque, osé.

Vogue without Carine ? That just wouldn't be Vogue anymore!” Jean-Paul Gaultier told us, in a black feather mask. “I'm two days away from the show but I certainly wasn't going to miss this. I hope the night gets very naughty, and I trust Carine to bring this to the party,” he said with a wink.

Indeed, Carine's oh-la-la touch has given French Vogue a look that would make many other Vogues blush and look away.

“I love working with them, they always come up with the most original concepts and the most beautiful ideas. They're incredible,” said Karlie Kloss, who wore a gold mask made out of microscopic stars.

That might be true, but not all seemed to care: We couldn't help but notice Karl Lagerfeld was a no-show–he was hanging out at the Café de Flore instead, a source told us.

In the meantime, Carine didn't seem to mind, as she danced away like a teenage girl.

Carine vs Anna, the never-ending debate. “if I had to be reincarnated as one them ? Neither!” laughed Zac Posen. Who would you rather be ?

The Real Reason Behind Brad’s Split With Rachel Zoe?

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 01:03 PM PDT

Rachel Zoe just tweeted this photo of her and her former employee Brad Goreski with the following caption: “Me and lil B on our last photo shoot together.”

Seems like Zoe is really taking strides to make her breakup with Brad seem, as per the original People mag story that broke news of their split, “amicable.” They both released statements to People gushing about how much they loved each other and Zoe said, "He did this with such class and elegance. And I get it. I just told him, 'I'm here for you always.'"

However rumors surfaced soon after that the New York Times’ profile on Brad was the real reason for his departure. Apparently diva Zoe was peeved that her supporting cast-member had taken her spotlight and secured the most plum placement an aspiring fashion mogul can hope for: A profile in the Style section of the NYT. As far as we can tell, after a quick Nexis search, Zoe has never received the same treatment from the paper of record.

A source familiar with the goings on over at the Bravo reality show lends more credence to the rumors. Rachel has her own publicist at entertainment PR powerhouse 42West in addition to Bravo’s in house publicity, a source tells us, and she was upset that Brad, who doesn’t even pay for outside publicity, managed to snag such awesome press.

“And I don’t believe for a second [Brad gave notice] a month ago,” our source tells us. It’s a good point. Why would we just be hearing about the split now if Brad told Zoe he was leaving last month?

The whole fallout brings into question the timing of news of Zoe’s pregnancy. Whether or not the news is true, it’s a helpful diversion.

Adventures in Copyright: Steve Madden Takes On Burberry

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 12:00 PM PDT

A reader tipped us off about these Steve Madden booties’ and the striking resemblance they bear to Burberry Prorsum’s Shearling-lined aviator boots. The Steve Maddens are clearly a knock-off. The shape, placement of the buckles and platform seem directly copied from the original. And it’s difficult to tell in this photo, but the Steve Maddens also appear to have some sort of shearling lining. Of course, the Burberrys, which retail on Net-a-Porter for $1,095 are much better-looking overall, but Steve Madden’s $150 knock-offs really aren’t so bad. What do you think?

Fashion News Roundup: Bloggers in Pink Pony, Inès de la Fressange’s Return to Chanel and Jil Sander for Practically Free

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 09:50 AM PDT

Bloggers Heart Pink Pony: It’s officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it also happens to be the 10th Anniversary of Ralph Lauren’s Pink Pony foundation. In honor of these occasions, 100 fashion bloggers were enlisted to help spread awareness by modeling the latest Pink Pony polo, including our very own Lauren Sherman (# 66)! {Style List}

Chanel Brings Back the ’80s: Not through the Spring collection (we don’t think), but through Inès de la Fressange, the face of Chanel in the ’80s. Inès, now 52, will walk the runway show in Paris on Tuesday. She’s also booked to appear in Chanel’s next campaign alongside the aughts’ Freja Beha Erichsen and the ’90s’ Stella Tennant. {WWD subscription required}

Style.com’s Very Real Reality Show: We were right and now it’s confirmed, and with more details. Sounds like this reality show will have very little in common with The City, in a very good way. {NY Daily News}

Yoox Loves Jil Sander: Yoox.com is holding an exclusive event starting today where registered users only will receive an additional 20% off + free shipping on a selection of already reduced Jil Sander items. But hurry, it only lasts 48 hours! {Yoox}

Shoe Aficionado: A new site that is basically Gilt Groupe but with shoes, is hoping to become a go-to for discount designer footwear. Their current featured designer is Steve Madden and we think the brands will keep getting better as membership grows. {Shoe Aficionado}

Frozen in Time: Shed off the years scoop by scoop with the new anti-aging ice cream. Don’t run to the grocery store just yet. Ampere Life Science and Unilever are still researching this concept, which will hopefully be realized in about five years in the form of a new Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Also, don’t think this means you get to eat as much ice cream as you want. It still has calories. {Allure}

Rachel Zoe Might be Pregnant. Literally.

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 08:57 AM PDT

Looks like Rachel finally took that blood test. A source has confirmed to OK! that Rachel Zoe is, in fact, three months preggers with her first child. We die. Perhaps this explains her absence from Milan and Paris fashion weeks?

"She's going to be going on maternity leave from full time styling immediately after this year's Academy Awards, and doesn't expect to work again until early fall at the earliest. She and Rodger are especially happy and Rachel, who can normally be quite emotionless, even teared up a few times as she started letting people in on the news," the source told OK!.

From Taylor’s firing to Brad leaving, it’s shaping up to be quite a tumultuous year for Zoe. And although we can’t even begin to imagine her with a baby bump, we wish Rachel and Rodge all the best if this exciting news is true.
