Fenton/Fallon’s Dana Lorenz is Launching a Men’s Collection

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 07:00 AM PDT

We love Fenton/Fallon for its tough yet glossy appeal–now the guys get a chance to be adorned by Dana Lorenz. The designer just announced that she’s launching a full-blown mens collection for Spring 2011, as well as collaborating with our favorite menswear designer Tim Hamilton on jewelry for his REDUX line. Lorenz’s main collection will retail from retail from $150-$500 and includes leather-wrapped bracelets and necklaces.

The designer says that she wants men to be at ease in her pieces. “Guys still want to wear things they forget they have on, that are comfortable and natural–but I wanted to push the boundaries of that a little."

For Hamilton, she’s doing everything from pins and pendants to wallet chains–14 exclusive pieces in total.

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store.

Which designer is so hard to work with that his casting director dropped him two days before the show and now has his family members calling around to find models?

Exclusive: Behind the Scenes at Naomi Campbell’s Rehearsal for Fashion’s Night Out

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 06:12 AM PDT

I’ve had some crazy experiences in my life, but the last place I expected to find myself on the first day of New York Fashion Week was in a Midtown dance studio watching Naomi Campbell bust a move. But it happened. And it was kind of amazing.

Naomi and a gaggle of young models were rehearsing their Fashion’s Night Out performance, which will take place tonight at Dolce & Gabbana’s New York flagship on Madison Ave. The dance, put together by Campbell’s friend Laurie Gibson, features Naomi fist-pumping to Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Kanye West in “Run this Town.” Gibson, who’s made a name for herself choreographing tons of music videos, including Lady Gaga’s, is so positive and encouraging I almost wanted to jump in there. “It doesn’t have to be perfect, just honest” she tells the girls. “Except for the marches–those have to be perfect–you’re models!”

The theme of Dolce & Gabbana’s FNO party is, simply, Naomi. She’s been in the business for 25 years, so they’re celebrating with limited edition t-shirts featuring iconic images of Naomi taken by the likes of Patrick Demarchelier and Steven Meisel. I got the chance to chat with the Super for a few minutes. She was very humble and genuinely excited about the whole thing. “It’s such an honor to work with Laurel,” she told me. “I studied dance and I always wished I could do dance or performance. But I chose a career as a model instead. This is a dream come true.” As for what she thinks about an entire evening dedicated to her career: “The whole thing is just really fun. It’s a celebration.”

Click through for my photo diary of the rehearsal.

Drama and Daywear at Christian Siriano

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 05:30 AM PDT

Christian Siriano. The name brings about memories of “Ferosha Coutura,” good Project Runway seasons, and giant poufy dresses.

But the pint-sized wonderboy has grown so much since those days. Now with a successful shoe and bag line for Payless and sunglasses on the horizon, Christian Siriano is becoming a brand beyond reality TV.

The problem with Siriano’s SS11 collection is that it’s caught in limbo between wearable and editorial looks. While the sportswear felt like a tribute to tried and true vacation-wear (slim white pants, leather short trenches, voluminous maxi-dresses, lone ruffles, and exotic prints) his sumptuous evening wear is a unique offering. No American designer can create an evening gown with a four foot diameter like Siriano. The dresses are stunningly crafted and have a kooky drama that instantly identifies them as Siriano-made; all trademarks of an excellent designer and an excellent brand.

At this point in his career, Siriano needs to choose a team and stick with it–I say drama all the way. His strength is making elaborate evening wear that’s probably unwearable by most of the population, but covetable by editorial standards. And with a clear talent for accessory design (the shoes are immaculate as are the sunglasses) there’s potential for Siriano to grow a business in the accessories market while maintaining an extravagant runway presentation.

Tommy Wants You to ‘Meet The Hilfigers’

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 05:09 AM PDT

It’s the Tommy Hilfiger brand’s 25th birthday this season, and on Sunday we’re in for what is sure to be a fabulous runway show, followed by a big party where The Strokes are rumored to be playing.

But until then, Tommy wants to get into your head. The company has launched a new ad campaign entitled Meet the Hilfigers–you might have noticed it in the September books–featuring Fall 2010 runway looks. But this isn’t your typical print campaign. Each model plays a character, from wannabe actor Noah to off-kilter socialite Issie. (You can read all about them here.) Starting today, the Hilfigers will begin making public appearances. First at the US Open, then at Fashion’s Night Out.

Here’s the social media bit: Each of the characters–Chloe, Noah, Jacquelyn, and Lea–will be broadcasting their “lives” via Twitter. Their handles will be announced shortly via the official Tommy Hilfiger Facebook and Twitter pages.

This is all kind of goofy, but in a good way. (Plus, it doesn’t hurt the Hilfiger boys are all pretty cute.) So many big brands–luxury, mass, and in-between–are ultra lazy when it comes to social media. They think throwing up a Facebook page and calling it a day works–it doesn’t. We applaud Tommy for doing something different and are eager to see how it pans out.

Ten Questions For Project Runway

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 04:39 AM PDT

1) We can't blame Michael Kors for promoting his sunglasses on the show, right? At least he's entertaining, unlike the Garnier guy.

2) What kind of resort wear do you think Tim wears? He didn't look very comfortable on that boat in his suit.

3) Does Gretchen REALLY think Casanova is a "retard"? (His word, not mine, I swear!)

4) Isn't it so sweet that Mondo admitted to being a "dick" (again, his word) and apologized to Michael C? Although that brief shot of them canoodling after the judging was a little weird.

5) Why, oh, why won't they just send Ivy home already??

6) Did the judges ruin their chances of future K-Mart and Forever 21 sponsorships after their not-so-kind characterizations of these establishments?

7) While I genuinely liked April's garment, does anyone feel like she had just a tiny advantage after Michael Kors gave her specific instructions on how to do the boy short?

8) Can we discuss "stylish American actress" Kristen Bell? I thought she was articulate until she said that she's a punky, edgy babydoll then told Mondo he needed to make a more adult outfit, and then later said she was attracted to neutrals. They really shouldn't allow actresses to be judges.

9) What was with all the palazzo pants? I think they're flattering on a very small percentage of the population.

10) Is anyone else really sad about pobrecito Casanova? The montage at the end was making me well up.

Ten Random Thoughts About the Project Runway Finale Show

Posted: 10 Sep 2010 04:00 AM PDT

So I have a confession to make: I really love Project Runway. As I sat and watched all the personalities file in and Heidi with her mom-shag and suit of indeterminate color (red? coral? fire orange?) take the stage, I was as giddy as a 13-year-old who's been waiting six hours for Justin Bieber. It's just damn good entertainment. I make no apologies for my uncoolness.

Obviously there are still several weeks of Project Runway to air before the finale show. So ten designers showed full collections today as a decoy, because the public can't possibly be trusted with such high-level information as who the real three finalists are.

The Theatre at Lincoln Center was a madhouse before the show. I saw the staff kick a pregnant woman out of a seat because it was for the sponsors. Despite her plea to allow them to let her stay until someone claimed the seat, they hauled her up and out of there.

The usual celeb suspects were front and center. Joanna Coles, Nina Garcia, Michael Kors, Harvey Weinstein, Betsey Johnson. Randomly, Jordin Sparks and Tyson Beckford–snapping gum and shooting pics paparazzi-style–were there, too. And the finale guest judge? Jessica Simpson. Sigh. She was wearing a very loose, spangled silver dress with cutout sleeves, looked very tan, and had a nice tidy ponytail.

Going through all ten shows would be boring, so allow me to make Ten Random Thoughts instead:

1) After very unscientific observation, it seemed like the judges scribbled the most notes for Michael D, Christopher, Ivy, and Gretchen. Are any of these the finalists?

2) The music at Michael C's show, which consisted of bronze-mauve satin and feather monstrosities, was club beats over a woman's voice breathily saying, "Michael Costello." Creepy.

3) Casanova's collection was dedicated to his grandmother. It was all slinky tight satin pants and sequins. No plush puppies, as he assured us there wouldn't be.

4) Valerie was WAY too perky and described her collection as "Rainbow Brite and David Bowie's love child." I was kind of loving her sharpie-colored dresses, which had a slight Christopher Kane for Versus vibe.

5) Gretchen claimed that she had experienced a lot of growth and self-discovery. Her collection was called, "Running Through Thunder." Moss, 70s, and earthy was the theme.

6) Mondo's collection was full of crazy graphics shot through with hot pink. I probably wouldn't wear any of it, but loved looking at it. Betsey Johnson was all smiles.

7) I didn't see Tim Gunn, which was very sad. I can't wait to see the backstage footage. However, his new book was part of the swag bag. This saves me the embarrassment of actually going to the store and purchasing it, which I totally would have done.

8) Michael D's collection was really great. He was inspired by x-rays and Rothko. Beautiful golds, blacks, and burnout fabrics.

9) Jessica Simpson looked very uncomfortable the whole time. I'm worried about her.

10) The people sitting next to me didn't know anyone's names. You're welcome.

Victor de Souza’s Magical Evening Wear

Posted: 09 Sep 2010 05:00 PM PDT

One of our Fashionista 15, Victor de Souza did not disappoint at his Spring 2011 runway show last night at an intimate gallery space in the garment district. Although he’s worked in the fashion industry for several years, he is just starting to make a name for himself with his eponymous line of women’s wear. And we aren’t the only ones who have taken notice. The space, though small, was completely full with, well, some random people and family and Amanda Lepore, but also several editors including Elle‘s Kate Lanphear.

I was a little tired after a long day of fashion week prep, but these clothes definitely woke me up. If Lady Gaga hasn’t already worn Victor de Souza, she will. The collection was mostly evening wear with a few odd bodysuit things mixed in. What really wowed me…or maybe just freaked me out…were the unexpected, bold uses of color and the impossible structure of some of the gowns. Also, apparently we aren’t done with the huge shoulder thing yet, at least Victor isn’t. Then, there was the hot pink ball gown (seen above) that closed the show and barely even fit on the runway, which I think I actually gasped upon seeing. Click through for more.

Nicholas K Opens Fashion Week at Lincoln Center

Posted: 09 Sep 2010 04:00 PM PDT

So Lincoln Center is officially open for fashion business, and it looks spectacular. I actually got chills when I walked into the huge plaza and saw the fountain. And I live on the Upper West Side. I've been there 500 times, at least. It was definitely the best-dressed crowd I've seen in the neighborhood in a long time, so that alone was enough to move me to tears.

After being photographed by a Japanese magazine (I have no idea why, but of course I agreed to it), I was greeted by the usual burly men with ear pieces at the door. Inside the tents, it's a wonderland of corporate sponsorship, with Maybelline offering make-up applications, Kim Crawford with wine and hand massages, and Tresemme doing hair styling.

The check-in process was amazingly simple with the new FashionGPS in place. And the PR girls all looked calm and collected behind their imposing row of Macs. I checked into two shows at once and it took a grand total of three minutes. I'm sure horror stories will emerge of system failures, but this morning it was a hive of efficiency.

So onto my first show of the season, Nicholas K, a label which was co-founded by siblings Christopher and Nicholas Kunz. It's also the first People's Revolution-repped show I've ever seen, so I made sure to get right to my seat and not annoy anyone by dithering around on the runway. I watched Emily Bungert effortlessly getting everyone seated. Then Kelly came in. Watching her in action in real life was surreal. I want 1/10th of that woman's confidence. I sat up a bit straighter when she made eye contact with me.

Oh, the clothes, you ask? Really, really cool. Tops were loose, mostly hooded, and in a palette of slate and olive. Box plaid, berets, and drapey dresses rounded out the mix. I don't think there was one look I wouldn't have worn. And Nicholas K guys are exactly the ones I should have avoided in college, but didn't. Sort of grungey, with floppy hair and loose pants.

Two of the pieces are going to show up on Fashion Stake, where it looks like Nicholas K has received about 50% of the funding they're asking for. The first look was a cascading, draped, sleeveless grey dress, and the second, the Luden jacket, was boxy and military-esque with a huge floppy collar. Both great.

It was an auspicious beginning to Fashion Week, and I’m looking forward to more.

Burberry’s ‘Retail Theatre’: Now You Can Shop the Collection on Your iPad Immediately Following the Show

Posted: 09 Sep 2010 03:00 PM PDT

Remember how earlier this week we said the fashion industry is slowly but surely beginning to embrace technology? Well, here’s more proof.

Yesterday, Burberry unveiled their 'Retail Theatre' concept, which completely reshapes the way consumers shop for their Spring/Summer 2011 womenswear collection.

On September 21, Burberry will be broadcasting their 2011 S/S London Fashion Week show, live from London Fashion Week, to 25 flagship stores worldwide, heigthening the in-store experience for invited guests.

"Customers at the exclusive in-store digital events will experience the clothes, the music, the energy and the atmosphere in real time," says Christopher Bailey, Burberry's Chief Creative Officer in a press release.

But that’s not all. After viewing the show, customers will then have the opportunity to further peruse, or even buy pieces from the collection on iPads that will be passed out in store (not for keeps), using a specially designed Burberry app. If customers choose to purchase an item, they can expect to have their orders on their doorstep in seven weeks, which believe it or not, is really fast compared to other luxury industry delivery times.

We’ve got to hand it to Burberry. After their AW10 New York 3D experience, and their successful foray into social networking, they seem to be one of the most tech-savvy labels in the game. Well done, Burberry.
