It’s Happening–Fashion’s Night Out Round Three Posted: 30 Nov 2010 06:57 AM PST It’s baaaack. Fashion’s Night Out, aka Halloween for fashionistas, will take over the city’s stores for the third year in a row. Mayor Bloomberg, Vogue, the CFDA and NYC & Company (the city’s marketing and tourism org), announced today that the third annual Fashion’s Night Out will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2011. No word yet on what kind of extravagant promotions Vogue and the city will dream up to top last year’s over-the-top FNO which included the city’s largest public fashion show, but we’re sure Anna and the Mayor will work something out. And if this year’s Black Friday numbers are any indication (sales totaled $45 billion, up from $41.2 billion last year, according to the National Retail Federation), Americans are ready to shop. Cardigan’s Lynne Hiriak Explains the Origins of Your Favorite Sweaters, From Cable to La Mariniere Posted: 29 Nov 2010 02:09 PM PST As see-your-breath-weather settles upon us, it's only natural that we're all craving a cuddle in our favorite sweaters. Leah’s got a thing for cardi-coats. I'm almost halfway through my Wool and the Gang project…from last winter. This season, there’s a gaggle of fuzzy numbers to choose from for more instant gratification, with many classics making a comeback. It got us thinking about where these styles originated. So we went to knit-wit Lynne Hiriak, of Cardigan by Lynne Hiriak–who has been designing sweaters for nearly 15 years working with Michael Kors, Derek Lam, and Thakoon along the way–for a history lesson on some of her favorite styles, and which will be finding their way into her closet this season. (By the way–you can save up to 65% at Cardigan’s Cyber Monday sale, going on right now.) Exclusive: Crystal Renn On Going ‘Under the Knife’ For Tom Ford in French Vogue (Including Pics) Posted: 29 Nov 2010 12:50 PM PST Here’s more evidence that Tom Ford’s guest edited holiday issue of French Vogue lives up to all the hype: An eight-page spread of Crystal Renn as a Jocelyn Wildenstein-esque plastic surgery addict, shot by Tom Ford and styled by Carine Roitfeld. We got word in advance that Ford would take on plastic surgery in his issue of French Vogue, but the resulting editorial, featuring the unstoppable Crystal Renn, is more dynamic (and at times grotesque) than we could have imagined. Despite the fact that Renn is an amazing model whose star is on the rise, she’s outspoken about size in the fashion industry (having gone from a size zero when she was battling anorexia to plus size), and her size tends to make headlines over her modeling. Most recently, folks were buzzing about her latest editorial in Harper’s Bazaar, and wondering if she was still “plus size.” (She’s an 8, sometimes a 10, her agent told us). But this spread, titled “La Panthere Ose” (or, according to my rusty french, “The Panther Dares”–so perhaps panthers are cougars in France?), should put the focus squarely on Renn’s modeling ability and the story it tells about plastic surgery. And if it looks like Renn has been enhanced in the editorial it’s because she has been. A cast was made of her face so she could be fitted with prosthetic cheeks and lips. While some models might cringe at having to alter their appearance a la Heidi Montag, Renn relished the gig. “What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to express myself, often doing this by becoming a sort of character on the shoots that I do, and every time I work with Carine I feel the character approach is emphasized,” Renn told us. “When they were taking the cast of my face, fitting me for prosthetic cheeks and lips, I remember thinking this is why I do my job, for moments like this. After the shoot I took that very mask and asked Tom to sign it, it sits in my living room as we speak.” Not a bad souvenir. Check out the full spread. It’s amazing. Posted: 29 Nov 2010 12:29 PM PST If Simon Doonan is the face of Barneys New York, then Julie Gilhart has been its voice. But that’s all about to change, as Gilhart is leaving the company, along with Judy Collinson, executive vice president and general merchandise manager of womenswear, WWD reports. Collinson will be replaced by Daniella Vitale, a Gucci vet and former colleague of newish Barneys CEO Mark Lee. Vitale will serve as chief merchant and executive vice president, overseeing all of women's and Barneys.com operations. It might be sad, but it’s not exactly a surprise the Collinson and Gilhart are out. I’m not sure if I’m extremely jealous or eternally scarred. Either way, it’s sure to bring back that cowboy trend so popular circa Brokeback Mountain. What do you think of this lip-locking action? Attend Sally Lyndley’s “Introduction To Styling” Seminar Posted: 29 Nov 2010 11:30 AM PST With the feedback I’ve received through my Fashionista column, I have created "The Introduction to Styling." It’s a three-day seminar of conversations and exercises where attendees will learn what it takes to be a stylist. This includes practical information about setting up a styling business, from the relationships you need to build to the tools you need to use. All of the knowledge taught in the course is original content created and written by me, based on my 13-year career all over the world. Why attend? Well, I’m the first stylist with high fashion luxury clients, and a fashion background, to create an original weekend like "The Introduction to Styling," which in its essence, will teach students the fundamental basics of becoming a stylist. Other courses and seminars are taught by people who possess very little or no experience in the marketplace, definitely not teachers who are considered experts. I created this training seminar after observing the struggle of my interns and assistants from misinformation–and lack of information–available in the current fashion learning environments. "The Introduction to Styling" seminar enables students to acquire the information they need to become powerful stylists, whether you are a full-blown stylist or just starting as an assistant. Gift Guide: The Best Beauty Sets To Give And Get This Holiday Season Posted: 29 Nov 2010 11:00 AM PST We've had arguments with people who say that beauty gifts are boring and impersonal. This can be true if you just buy some random fragrance set in a tacky basket at your corner drugstore on Christmas Eve. If, however, you put a bit of thought into it, you can get some gorgeous, thoughtful things. This year there is an absolute flood of gift sets available at all price points (though we decided not to include a $1,600 fragrance basket we found). So we've pulled the best scent, color, and spa sets, with an eye towards originality. They're guaranteed to get you a kiss under the mistletoe, or at the very least, a delighted squeal.
