Best Dressed: Georgia May in Westwood, Natalie in Rodarte and Emma in Vionnet Posted: 13 Nov 2010 06:52 AM PST This week, Georgia May Jagger stunned in a yellow Vivienne Westwood number. Natalie Portman wore a lovely frock by Rodarte, who designed the costumes for her latest film, Black Swan. The adorable Chloe Moretz looks all grown up in this Proenza Schouler–she’s definitely one to watch. Camilla Belle looked super chic in Derek Lam. And Emma Watson can do no wrong on the red carpet these days and this gorgeous velvet Vionnet dress is no exception. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Emma Watson To Design A Line With Alberta Ferretti, Will Work For Free Posted: 12 Nov 2010 01:49 PM PST Now that Emma Watson is no longer tethered to Hermione Granger, she’s free to delve into other non-Harry Potter related projects. First up? A collaboration with Alberta Ferretti. Watson is working with the Italian designer to create a line of organic clothing due out just after Christmas, UsMagazine.com is reporting. “I can’t reveal the name yet but there will be more information about it soon,” Watson told the gossip mag. She did, however, divulge that the line will be “very classic, 60s Jane Birkin.” Can’t go wrong with that kind of inspiration. It’s no surprise that Watson’s first post-Potter plan is fashion-related. She has an impeccable sense of style, looks stunning in her Burberry campaigns, and has been killing it on the red carpet lately to promote the last of the Potter films, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. In fact, the 20-year-old Brown student is game for working with anyone without pay (she is, after all, the highest paid actress in Hollywood) in fashion as long as they’re producing fairly and organically. “I will put it out there that I will work for anyone for free if they are prepared to make their clothing fair trade organic,” Watson said. First Look: Katie Ermilio Spring 2011 Posted: 12 Nov 2010 01:00 PM PST If we had to wear nothing but Katie Ermilio‘s Spring 2011 collection next year, that would be fine. Katie was pretty much born into fashion. Her grandmother was Grace Kelly’s personal clothier and her grandfather made iconic jackets for events like Augusta’s master tournament and World War II. While that might be a daunting history to live up to, Katie’s contribution to the family business is definitely worthy of recognition. The look is understated elegance. Simple cream dresses are the perfect length and boast just enough interesting detail–a sheer overlay or peplum–to keep them from being too simple. And, there are two silk blouses that are more than worthy of our affection. Click through for the lookbook! This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Lady Gaga to Cover March Issue of American Vogue Posted: 12 Nov 2010 11:51 AM PST Lady Gaga isn’t your typical Vogue covergirl. She’s no Gwyneth or Keira, but come March she’ll have snagged the cover of American Vogue, a source confirms to us. It’s not the first time Gaga has covered Vogue–she was on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan a few months ago, in drag. Here’s hoping US Vogue won’t take away all the things that make Gaga so unique (and that they won’t airbrush her within an inch of her life). Ask Chris Benz: How Do I Move From Wall Street to 7th Avenue? Posted: 12 Nov 2010 11:30 AM PST I’m currently a second year MBA student and a big fan of your column on Fashionista. I was working in financial trading for a few years and discovered that I hated it. So I came to school and realized I wanted to put my talents to use in fashion, which I love. However, the industry is really hard to penetrate and it feels like MBAs are not valued. Do you have any advice/suggestions for people who do not have a pure fashion background but would love to get into this industry? Any advice or even a word of encouragement is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!! J-MBA Dear J-MBA, An education is a huge attribute, of course, to any career. It helps you understand things in different ways, and creates a foundation for you to follow your dreams. Fashion is, above all else, a business. A financial education is something that’s often missing, and in mercurial industries like fashion, something that is highly prized. There are some terrific headhunting companies for fashion-related placement and I am sure they would be overjoyed to hear from someone with your qualifications. Like I have mentioned in previous Q&A's, there are so many ancillary yet integral roles under the fashion umbrella, many of which go unsung as heroes in the industry. The financiers and businesspeople are often times overlooked but play just as important a role in the glamor, flash, and romance of the industry as the designers and models. So, I say, go for it! There is definitely a place for you in fashion, particularly if that is what you love. Finances may not be terribly scintillating in any industry, but you might as well work in one where you're in the orbit of style. xx Chris will be back next week with more fashion and career advice. Forever 21 Hits UK, Daily Mail Complains Prices Are Jacked (Cough, Topshop) Posted: 12 Nov 2010 10:43 AM PST Forever 21 is headed across the pond to compete with UK high street staples like Topshop and Primark. Their first outpost opens in Birmingham today, to be followed by stores in London and Dublin. This, on the heels of the opening of their 91,000 square foot flagship store in Times Square. The recession has been kind to Forever 21. “The customer always knows they will get great value at Forever 21, so the fact that it’s a difficult time now just..makes our concept potentially more appealing to people,” executive vice president Larry Meyer told the BBC. But the Daily Mail is griping that while the UK prices are still cheap, they are significantly marked up from their prices in the US. The paper’s story, which ran with the headline “Chic, but not THAT cheap: US High Street favourite Forever 21 hits UK (but why are prices 25 per cent higher here?)” points out that “a dotted abstract skirt that sells for the equivalent of £11.08 in the US comes in at £13.80 in the UK, a mark-up of 24.5per cent,” and that “a faux leather jacket with a studded leather collar is £39.80 in this country, which is some 33per cent more than the £29.76 in the US and Canada.” When asked about the pricing differential, a spokesperson for Forever 21 told the Mail, “When pricing our ranges we do not simply replace the dollar sign, we carefully consider all the local influencing factors such VAT and import costs.” Of course, this is a problem we’re all too familiar with. When Topshop arrived stateside, rather than adjusting prices based on the exchange rate, they seemed to simply double them and slap a dollar sign on the tag. If only there could be some sort of truce wherein Topshop adjusts their pricing in the US and Forever 21 does the same in the UK… This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Posted: 12 Nov 2010 10:14 AM PST Art for Fashion: The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards are on Monday and artist Rachel Feinstein is whipping up some very special trophies for the winners. The winning designers will receive a bronze swan and the runners up will receive two bronze eggs. The trophies are inspired by Cesar de Santo's reproduction of Leonardo Da Vinci's lost "Leda and the Swan" painting. There will also be lots of celebs like Carey Mulligan, Leighton Meester, Kim Kardashian, Karlie Kloss and Seth Meyers. {WWD} Erdem to Match: Buzzed about British designer Erdem has developed a capsule collection for UK retailer Matches. The gorgeous five-piece collection of printed dresses is available in stores and online today. Let’s all get one and be matchers. {Vogue UK} What Would Rachel Wear? Looks like the Brits love Rachel Bilson as much as we do. This shopping roundup answers the question, “What would Rachel Bilson wear?” I would be lying if I said I hadn’t asked myself the same question when in need of some style inspiration. {Telegraph UK} Reed Krakoff Hearts Exclusivity: "What a lot of women want is something that not everyone can afford," Krakoff told WWD. Reed Krakoff‘s brand is growing rapidly and he’s just announced his next endeavor: a fragrance. He’s going about it a little unconventionally. The fragrance will come in four different colored bottles, which you can choose. The bottle comes empty with two refills and a funnel. Also, it costs $695, so we suggest being really, really careful when filling that bottle. The scent is limited edition and will only be available at Reed Krakoff stores. {Elle.com} This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Our Top Ten Favorite Tweets By @NoBtotheS Posted: 12 Nov 2010 09:26 AM PST An anonymous fashion publicist, tweeting under the name @NoBtotheS, is becoming a real industry force. WWD reported today that the Twitter star’s comment re: Google launching an e-commerce platform might actually be true. (Google’s entrance into the fashion and retail realm should come as no surprise. Their latest efforts include throwing a fashion industry party next week DJed by Becka Diamond and the Misshapes, and launching project GStyle during the summer.) Anyways, @NoBtotheS, also known as No Bullshit, typically tweets about much less serious topics. In honor of our new hero, we’ve listed her top ten Tweets. Ever.
