Tear: Sofia Coppola Doesn’t Plan on Designing More Clothes Anytime Soon Posted: 19 Nov 2010 07:00 AM PST Sofia Coppola is my style icon. I love every, single thing she’s ever worn on the red carpet, mostly because she dresses for herself and no one else. One secret dream of mine–other than owning a Sofia Coppola x Louis Vuitton bag–is that she create another clothing collection. A sequel to her 1990s line MilkFed, perhaps? A spin on her piece for Lutz & Patmos? Last night I stood on the red carpet at the Lanvin x H&M runway show to ask her just that. And she answered me, wearing a dotty button down, fur coat, cropped trousers and simple t-strap heels. Swoon. (Also, if you could please forgive the pathetic quality of the video–it was a spontaneous moment!–I’d be much obliged. Figured you’d like to see it no matter how goofy it looks.) |

Lanvin x H&M’s Runway Show Was Everything and More Posted: 19 Nov 2010 05:40 AM PST It’s a rare day when fashion people actually look like they’re having fun–pure, unadulterated fun–at a runway show. But tonight at the Pierre Hotel, Alber Elbaz debuted his Lanvin x H&M collection. So things were different. The Scene: A tiny ballroom at the Pierre Hotel on the Upper East Side, and a runway decorated with mounds of hydrangeas. (Inspired by Yves Saint Laurent, who liked to decorate his runways similarly.) The Players: Friends Sofia Coppola and Anna Sui (who wore a mix of Lanvin and her own designs), Andie Macdowell (the only person who makes me wish my hair was curly again), Alex Wang, Sally Singer, Grace Coddington, Emma Roberts, Elettra Wiedemann, and a gaggle of bloggers, including Fashionista favorites Susie Bubble, Phil Oh, and Bryan Boy. The Runway: Yes, the one-of-a-kind versions of the H&M collection were stunning. But really, it was all about the atmosphere. And Anna Dello Russo. The models pranced down the runway much like they used to before the ’90s, “making love with the camera,” if you will. But of course ADR stole the show, stomping down the catwalk with a grey poodle. We love Anna, but a poodle makes her irresistible. The Shop: The salon was in the basement of the hotel, and we all waited for a good amount of time to enter the section where the clothes were, snacking on caviar-topped blinis and macaroons. Mr. Mickey was so patient–now I know why he’s gotten so far in this business. Once we were allowed access, I headed immediately to the shoe section to snag Leah a pair of the flower pumps. Luckily she has tiny feet–a size 6–so they were still available. Unfortunately, the long-sleeved black dress was sold out in my size. However, the one left would fit Cheryl, so I grabbed it. And finally, I found my piece–the fluffy, tobacco tulle ballet/New Look dress. It was the last thing I imagined myself picking up. But I tried it on, and it just felt right. Luckily, it was still perfect in the mirror at home. The Best Part: Alber working the floor in the makeshift boutique. He’s just so lovely! The Bottom Line: No, these pieces aren’t cheap–dresses range from $100–$250–but they’re worthy. The fabric quality and construction is better than any other high street collection I’ve seen. And I’ve seen pretty much all of them, from Karl to Luella and back. If you can bear to wait in line on Saturday morning, I suggest you do so. Exclusive: Every United Bamboo Calendar Cat Has A Story To Tell And We’re Sharing Them With You Posted: 18 Nov 2010 03:35 PM PST The second installment of United Bamboo’s beloved cat calendar went up for sale last week. And last night, we feted the cattastic calendar at Creatures of Comfort (205 Mulberry St.), where framed prints of the cats done up in RTW United Bamboo frocks are being auctioned off to benefit Animal Haven and Kitty Kind (as if you needed another excuse to go to Creatures of Comfort). Beyond raising funds to help the kitties, the best part about last night’s party was the chance to see the glorious calendar in full. On the flip side of every catetorial calendar page, there’s a kitty bio (including their pet peeves) and super cute anecdotes about them. Like how Oscar, Mr. February, is blind and has cheated death twice and does NOT like it when you blow on his whiskers! And that Egon lived in Istanbul for a while. And that TJ loves seaweed nori. Of course he does. But we’re sure you want to know more. So we bring you, exclusively, the backstory behind the United Bamboo calender cats. Behold: Tom Ford’s French Vogue Posted: 18 Nov 2010 02:52 PM PST
According to WWD, Ford accepted the offer from Carine Roitfeld to guest edit her baby over a year ago, before he had decided to show his own women’s collection in NYC this past season. And he truly assumed all the duties of EIC–from editing to casting to styling. “He took his role very seriously,” Roitfeld told the paper. “He is truly multitalented." The Ford-edited issue, which hits stands November 30, will also feature photography by Terry Richardson, a spread devoted to older women who haven’t gone under the knife, and best of all, family photos of the designer. Last Night’s Party: Celebrating the United Bamboo Cat Calendar Posted: 18 Nov 2010 11:57 AM PST Last night Fashionista teamed up with United Bamboo, Julia Frakes, and Creatures of Comfort to host a fête celebrating United Bamboo’s 2011 Cat Calendar. (Which is of course, our favorite calendar. Sorry Pirelli girls!) The party took place inside Creatures of Comfort’s spacious SoHo store, filled with more Margiela than I’ve ever seen outside the MMM store on Greenwich St. The real highlight of the party, though, was the framed portraits of United Bamboo’s calendar cats, which were being auctioned off to benefit Animal Haven and Kitty Kind. Unfortunately, no actual cats were at the party, but there were a lot of cool-cat downtown scenesters. DJ Johnny Misheff spun tunes, Julia Frakes hopped by wearing her bunny ears, and the Fashionista team staffed the bar, meaning the party was so good we completely ran out of wine. So if you woke up this morning in a strange place clutching a cat photo…oops! Overall it was a pretty great event, and it supported all the cute cats and dogs that need to find a loving home. Even if you didn’t attend the party last night, please visit Creatures of Comfort‘s Mulberry store to bid on a picture, and help make a fluffy friend’s life a little easier. The auction ends December 1. You can also donate directly at AnimalHavenShelter.org and KittyKind.org. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Rumor Mill: Former Russian Vogue EIC Aliona Doletskaya to Pop? Posted: 18 Nov 2010 10:40 AM PST Since Russian gallerina Dasha Zhukova resigned as the editor of Pop last week, folks have been wondering about who would replace her. A rumor from the twittersphere claims that former Russian Vogue EIC Aliona Doletskaya is gunning for the spot. And it comes from an insidery source. Fashion man about town Derek Blasberg just tweeted: “In today’s completely unsubstantiated rumors: Aliona Doletskaya, former editor-in-chief of Russian Vogue, is vying for the top gig at POP.” When Doletskaya resigned there were rumors she would replace Wintour at American Vogue. But since Anna’s not going anywhere soon, there could be some truth to the rumor, and Pop might hand the EIC spot over to another Russian. Pop, Katie Grand’s baby, took on a less fashion-y more artsy vibe under Zhukova’s reign, so Doletskaya would have the fashion cred and contacts to return the mag to its fashion roots. Is it true? Tell us if you know anything at tips@fashionista.com. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 18 Nov 2010 09:32 AM PST Karl On Kate: Karl Lagerfeld could care less about who will make Kate Middleton’s wedding dress (even though we do). But he does have some nice things to say about the future princess: “She is very different from Princess Diana, and seems very well balanced and a happy person. She is chic in a way the position needs. Let's wait and see." {WWD} The Outnet Gets an Overhaul: The Outnet is celebrating their new look by having a massive Alexander Wang sale. We are not sad about it. {Racked} The Times Tries to Figure Out Why People Like Kim Kardashian: The newspaper of record takes a look at the empire Kim K. and her sisters have created. {The New York Times} Tonchi In The Hot Seat at W? : NY Post media columnist Keith Kelly has it from a reliable source that Condé Nast isn’t pleased with Stefano Tonchi’s work at W because they don’t like “direction the magazine is taking.” When asked for comment, Condé told New York’s Daily Intel that Kelly’s story was, “the furthest thing from the truth. The company is thrilled with the work — newsstand and web, everything is fine. Our sales are strong.” Right… {Daily Intel} Jenny From The Block For Kohl’s: Jennifer Lopez and hubby Marc Anthony will design their own lifestyle collection for Kohl’s. The collection is expected to make $3 million in its first year. {Elle} This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
