Will Style.com’s Move to Fairchild Mean Restrictions on Editor Gifts?

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 07:00 AM PDT

Style.com’s move to the Fairchild Fashion Group received plenty of press.

But there’s an elephant in the room yet to be addressed publicly. Fairchild has a strict no-press trips/ no-gifting policy. Will Style.com editors be forced to follow those same rules?

If so, that would mean any work-related trip a Style.com editor or writer takes would have to be paid for by Fairchild. And they wouldn’t be allowed to accept gifts. (Aka swag.) According to one source, “it was such an issue when W was at Fairchild that it was one of the internal reasons why they moved < W to Conde.”

Fashionista contacted Fairchild to get the specifics on their gifting policy, as well as information on whether or not Style.com editors will be under the same regulations. "For the Fairchild Fashion Group, we're going to establish a standard that's consistent for the company,” a spokesperson told us.

Which means that they have no idea what they’re going to do, but whatever they decide will apply to everyone.

How big of a deal is this for Style.com’s editors? Probably not a huge one. Most of these people have worked at other publications with similar restrictions (WWD, New York Times), which means they understand the reasoning behind them.

As someone who has worked at places with lots of restrictions and places with none at all, there are challenges with both. These days, I don’t miss out on important press trips because it’s not within the budget, but I also get gifted a lot of things that I don’t need, want, or plan on writing about. And of course, it’s an ethical thing, too. Most journalists outside of this industry wouldn’t touch a free gift. For some reason it’s readily accepted in fashion.

As a source who once worked at WWD told me, “It was sort of an unspoken understanding that if you were going to accept goodies, you just don’t talk about it. The official policy was that no gifts were to be accepted. I remember snagging a relatively expensive purse after a market appointment, and the editor who I went with said ‘Just don’t tell the other interns.’”

Could It Be? A Sneak Peek at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 06:34 AM PDT

The spectacle that is the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show takes place next Wednesday, November 10 in NYC (and airs November 30 on CBS) but photos of the angels in their wings have started to leak.

There are some very unwieldy looking harp wings, a peacock feather in lieu of panties, and some athletic theme appears to be taking shape with Chanel Iman in a sheer baseball uniform.

The Gray Lady even took an interest in the VS Show today with Guy Trebay’s “Angels in Stripper Heels,” which takes a look at the casting process for the show. And describes Carolyn Winberg’s hair as having the “texture of wood shavings.”

Take a look.

Sandra Lee Is the New First Lady of New York: An Introduction To Her Style (Tablescapes Included)

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 03:17 PM PDT

Andrew Cuomo is New York’s new governor, which means that his longtime girlfriend, Food Network star Sandra Lee, is New York’s new first lady.

Confession: When we’re not trolling the internet for fashion news or out at fashion events, we’re watching the Food Network. Food Network’s lady stars tend not to be too concerned with their style. Giada De Laurentiis’s style is pretty much limited to plunging jersey v-neck tops with a camisole underneath, because, let’s be honest, if it weren’t for her camisoles Everyday Italian would really be food porn. (Weird side note on Giada, Lauren hears from a source that Giada wears all Anthropologie because her husband’s a VP there.) I don’t even know what Rachel Ray wears because I can’t see behind the pile of ingredients and EVOO she’s loaded into her arms to avoid a second trip to the pantry or the fridge. There’s that new show Bitchin’ Kitchin’ on the Food Network’s hipster sister channel, the Cooking Channel, and the host, “Nadia G,” seems to have an intense rockabilly thing going, but I haven’t watched because I hate the name of the show so much and if I hear that promo where she’s says she’d rather “make out with Clooney” one more time I might burst. (Apologies for the ranty too-long sentence.) Lauren’s Food Network style icon is Claire Robinson of Five Ingredient Fix because she likes her vintage aprons and gold lockets.

But Sandra Lee is the one Food Network star who puts a lot of effort into matching her outfits to her tablescapes and even to her cocktails. She loves her some cocktails. So this is an exciting development that the Semi Home Made star will be even more visible at events and on the red carpet.

If you’re unfamiliar with the stylings of Sandra Lee and her matching tablescapes, we’ve rounded up some of her greatest hits. She also goes all out for Halloween, which commands some respect. Enjoy.

Gucci and Christie’s Team Up to Bring You the Least Sketchy Way to Buy or Sell Vintage Handbags

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 02:37 PM PDT

Have an old Gucci bag from the ’70s lying around? It might be time to go through those family heirlooms because Gucci and Christie’s are interested. Or, at the very least, they'll give you a free appraisal.

An online service, called "Gucci Collector: Presented by Christie's" is the auction house’s first ever single fashion house specialization. It launched in January and has gotten over 600 submissions from over 25 countries. Basically, "Gucci collectors" can upload pictures of their vintage items online and within two to four weeks, an expert panel made up of Christie's Director of Fashion and Textiles, Patricia Frost, her team of costume specialists and the Gucci Archive Department will studiously examine the item and present you with an auction estimate. And if you are looking to sell, you will also be told whether your item is appropriate for a Christie's auction or of interest to either Gucci or Christie's from a "historical perspective." We’re not sure what kind of commission they’re offering, but this sounds a lot easier than selling through eBay or a consignment shop. And if you do ultimately decide to sell through consignment, at least you can find out what your bag is really worth.

Looking to purchase your own piece of Gucci history? On December 2, 30 of the best items they've acquired through the service will be put up for auction in Christie's Fashion Through the Ages sale. The items will range in value from £600 to £3,000 ($966 to $4,830), to which is pricey, but at least their authenticity isn’t in question. Particularly lust-worthy offerings include a rare beauty case from the late ’70s/early ’80s and a white leather handbag with bamboo detailing from the late ’50s. Those items that interested Gucci from an "historical perspective" on the other hand, might end up in a Gucci museum. The house is planning to open one in Florence next year to coincide with Gucci's 90th anniversary.

Atelier Swarovski’s Autumn/Winter Collections, Designed by Karl Lagerfeld, Christopher Kane and More

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 02:18 PM PDT

Atelier Swarovski by Karl Lagerfeld

Last night, I found myself adjacent to the Rockefeller Center ice skating rink (yep, it’s already that time), at the Swarovski boutique. It took me about 20 minutes to find in an out-of-the way section of Rockefeller Plaza’s basement level, but I was glad I did. First of all, they make some crazy things out of Swarovski crystals. Angels, cats, Disney characters, you name it. It is undeniably the perfect place to find pretty–if completely useless–holiday gifts.

However, the actual reason I was there was to celebrate the launch of Atelier Swarovski’s Autumn/Winter collection featuring limited edition jewelry pieces designed by Karl Lagerfeld, Stephen Webster, Holly Fulton, Kirt Holmes and Christopher Kane. Karl’s collection of bracelets and brooches was the most publicized of all of the collaborations and definitely superior in my opinion. Still, there were some lovely pieces to be found among the others. Click through for our favorites.

The Gap is Giving Away 10,000 Pairs of Jeans Via Facebook

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 11:40 AM PDT

Gap is teaming up with Facebook to give its fans some free stuff. Well, lots of free stuff. Today, Facebook announced at its mobile event in Palo Alto, Calif. that the specialty retailer would give away a pair of jeans to the first 10,000 people who checked in on an upcoming day. (The specific date has yet to be disclosed.) Those who check in after the first 10,000 will receive 40% off a pair of jeans.

This is part of Facebook’s new “deals” program, which works a lot like Foursquare’s “deals” program. Checking into Facebook via your mobile phone will soon mean getting discounts at many of the shops you’re visiting.

Fashion News Roundup: Clothes Made of Giant Rats, Hells Angels v. Alexander McQueen Settles, and GQ Has Even More Inappropriate Glee Footage

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 11:00 AM PDT

Rat Fashion Show? Leave it to Bushwick to host a fashion show featuring clothes made from Nutria: giant rodents that are actually OK to kill because they are destroying Louisiana’s wetlands. Southern designer Billy Reid has also made garments out of Nutria, spurring a Vanity Fair article earlier this year. Will Nutria be the next big trend? We’re not too keen on the idea of wearing rodents but maybe that’s just us. {Daily Intel}

Oh, Hell No: If you bought an Alexander McQueen Hells Angels knuckle ring after seeing it in our roundup, you might have to send it back. The Hells Angels, who sued McQueen, Zappos and Saks over the ring and other products bearing their trademark, have settled on the condition that the defendants stop selling the products AND recall and destroy what has already been sold. Those Hells Angels mean business. {WWD}

Kanye Hearts Alber:
I guess we’re not the only ones who are crazy for Lanvin‘s Alber Elbaz. Immediately following his crazy Ace Awards acceptance speech, Kanye West said, “Take me to Alber,” with whom he then had a “deep conversation about fashion.” {Page Six}

Attractive People in Love: Olivia Palermo and her bf star together in Mango’s latest ad campaign. It’s a little awk, dontchya think? {Elle}

Delusional Dov: Apparently Dov Charney’s optimism knows no bounds. Not suprisingly, American Apparel’s financial losses have continued, but Dov is still trying to hold onto his 53% stake in the company in lieu of welcoming outside investors. According to a source, he “wants to wait it out and is hoping the situation improves.” Really, Dov? {NY Post}

Who is your beauty icon? Take this more fun version of a personality quiz (OK, those are fun too) and find out which celebrity’s look you are subconsciously (or consciously) emulating. {College Fashion}

GQ Hearts Page Views: GQ has decided to capitalize on the attention (mostly negative) they’ve received regarding that kinda inappropriate Glee shoot. They plan to release behind-the-scenes footage on GQ.com because that will probably get them tons of web traffic (Apparently they got 33 million views the week those photos were posted). We just hope there’s some Terry Richardson in that footage. {EW}

Them is Fightin’ Words: Hermes Tells LVMH to Back Off

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 08:37 AM PDT

Execs at Hermes told French newspaper Le Figaro that they aren’t happy about LVMH’s sudden interest in the luxury group.

“The family has clearly and unanimously said: If you want to be friendly, Mister Arnault, you need to withdraw,” said Bertrand Puech, a fifth-generation descendant of founder Thierry Hermes.

LVMH denies that they’d like to acquire the company, of which they bought over $2 billion in shares last month. But it’s obvious that a hostile takeover isn’t completely out of the question.

Hermes clearly doesn’t want to be a part of a large conglomerate. (Its other brands are John Lobb, a very high-end shoemaker, and a Chinese luxury label called Shang Xia.) “This culture (of craftmanship and strong traditions) is hardly compatible with one of a big group. It is not a financial battle, it’s a cultural battle,” said Hermes CEO Patrick Thomas.

Translation: Quality will diminish if LVMH gains control.

Again, we want to reiterate that LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault says he has no interest in taking over the company. But Hermes is calling his bluff. Let the battle begin.

This Norwegian One Piece Sweatsuit Has a Celeb Following

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 07:49 AM PDT

The OnePiece is, as the name implies, a one piece sweatsuit type thing out of Norway. The brand describes the garment as “unique lifestyle leisureware, all about the chill out.” It’s priced between £80 to £120, comes in bright colors, bold patterns, and is marketed to young snowboarder types rather than couch potatoes. As the photos on the site indicate, if you’re a hot young Norwegian who likes to goof around on the slopes or in a shopping cart, the OnePiece is for you. The site even notes that it’s the perfect get up for recovering from a hangover. Agreed.

OnePiece recently launched in the UK where it’s developing something of a celeb/fashiony following. Melanie Rickey, Grazia’s fashion editor-at-large, recently picked one up in Norway and tweet pic’ed her purchase noting, “Today I got this from Norway. Tomorrow I’m sending my slanket to Oxfam.” Sadie Frost and Peaches Geldof have been spotted in the onesy. According to the Daily Mail, Frost says she’s dolling them out for Christmas this year. Of course, we’ve already noted that Scandinavian brands are having a moment.

Sure, this thing looks kind of crazy, like it was made for an oversized baby. But it also looks awesome. And comfy. And warm. And I kind of want to be wearing one right now.

Would you wear it?
