Housing Works’ Fashion For Action With Thom Browne Posted: 20 Nov 2010 06:57 AM PST While Lauren was shopping Lanvin x H&M with Alber at the Pierre, I was shopping Black Fleece with Thom Browne at Housing Works. Thursday night was the VIP gala to celebrate the 7th annual Fashion for Action fundraiser. Housing Works operates several charity thrift stores throughout the city to support the needs of low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. All of the proceeds from Fashion for Action–which includes a silent auction and sample sale–will benefit Housing Works' lifesaving services. We got to talk to Thom, the event's chair, about the fundraiser and his upcoming women's collection that we're already obsessed with. But first, the party. I started the evening at the VIP reception at the Rubin Museum of Art, where Thom posed for pictures with Anika Noni Rose and Patricia Clarkson, whom I love. Alex and Simon from RHONY were also there, mingling with Malan from Project Runway. Then, we crossed the street and stopped in the Housing Works thrift store to see if there was anything good. There was. A lot. And everyone had been drinking, so the whole place was a crazed shopping party that may have rivaled the one going on at the Pierre. Patricia Clarkson was trying on hats and Thom Browne was on hand to advise shoppers next to a rack of his very discounted women's Black Fleece jackets. I'm not sure if it was the wine, my new crush on Thom Browne or the amazing price ($75!), but I tried on a wool blazer and just couldn't not buy it. The sale is happening through the weekend, so we strongly recommend stopping by, especially since it's for a good cause. Thom, who I just have to say is disarmingly handsome and charming in person, graciously answered our questions. On why Housing Works is important to him: "It is an organization that really takes care of and cares about people that sometimes are forgotten. It's just a really worthwhile cause that sometimes isn't as glamorous as a lot of the other ones." On whether he actually shops at Housing Works: "I don't shop as much as I used to. I used to buy vintage clothing all the time and it was one place I used to always go, but it is a place that everyone can go and it's not just buying for the sake of buying, it's buying and you're really supporting something." On showing in Paris for the first time in September: "It was great, I'm gonna keep doing it and it's a lot of fun. You really feel like you're reaching the world in Paris." Best Dressed: Rachel in Chanel, Alexa in Proenza and Ashley in Balenciaga Posted: 19 Nov 2010 03:00 PM PST Soft and feminine was the theme in this week’s best dressed. Rachel Bilson looked lovely in vintage-y Chanel. Alexa Chung rocked green Proenza. Sofia Coppola is just always perfect and we love this Celine fur coat. Natalie Portman wore a sweet white Dior frock. And Ashley Olsen looked chic and cool in this peach Balenciaga sweater. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 19 Nov 2010 02:30 PM PST We’re all excited that Rachel Zoe finally confirmed that she and Rodge are expecting. Congrats! It undoubtedly will be the most stylish baby of all time! (Sorry, Suri.) We figure a child of Zoe will probably be swaddled in Chanel, so it’s a good thing Karl is making kids clothes now, at least for the runway. Since Chanel hasn’t come out with a full line of kids clothes yet, we’ve rounded up some of the most precious and most ridiculously expensive designer baby clothes out there. We’re just assuming Zoe will have a girl, hence all the dress suggestions. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Rumor: IMG is Selling The Daily, Editor Brandusa Niro Wants to Buy It Posted: 19 Nov 2010 02:03 PM PST Here’s something to shock you out of your Friday afternoon slump. We hear that IMG is selling New York Fashion Week newspaper The Daily, according to a source close to the situation. The likely buyer? Editor-in-Chief Brandusa Niro, who founded the publication in 2003. This development follows the news that Valentine Uhovski, Emily Gyben, and Emily Popp–all longtime reporters at the pub–have left. Guillaume Bruneau, who was most recently an art director at Elle, and Eddie Roche, a former producer with Alley Cat Group, have joined as art director and senior editor, respectively. In late October, The Daily struck a deal with AM NewYork–a free morning newspaper that’s circulated throughout New York City–to distribute an insert, called The Daily Chic Report. In an email to Fashionista, an IMG spokesperson said: “We decline to comment on rumor and speculation.” This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Last Night’s Parties: Happy (Cool) Hunting at Gap, and the Scene at Bergdorf’s Is Total Poppycock Posted: 19 Nov 2010 11:45 AM PST Believe it or not, Lanvin for H&M's launch wasn't the only event taking our fair city by storm last night—throughout midtown, holiday-themed fetes abounded. We kicked things off at Gap's Fifth Avenue flagship store for the grand opening of their Cool Hunting pop-up shop. Gap's steadily been growing their digital and multimedia savvy over the past few seasons, recently tapping bloggers like Susie Bubble and Foursquare founders Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai for their new holiday ads. They even shot a handful of wintry campaign videos, now up on Gap's YouTube and Facebook pages, that trigger a $1 charity donation each time a fan "likes" them. The decision to launch a mini-boutique curated by Cool Hunting's online editors, then, seemed like a natural next step. As for the Gap-approved goods themselves, we were particularly drawn to AMH Design's DIY needlepoint iPhone slipcases and a tempting vitrine of jewelry from Jill Platner. Those on more super-slim budgets will also fare well—BAGGU's colorful leopard-print totes ring in at just $8 a pop. With everything from kitschy trophies to Mark Bittman cookbooks to hanging terrariums lining the wooden-plank walls, it felt like we were browsing for unique finds in our coolest cousin's memorabilia-stocked basement. Although we doubt said cousin would have a never-ending supply of brownies from Fat Witch Bakery and tasty sliders from The Meatball Shop… Later that night, we swung by Bergdorf Goodman to check out the iconic department store's stunning new holiday window displays. Inside on the main floor, a decidedly uptown crowd celebrated this season's astrology-themed masterpieces with champagne and thimble-sized cupcakes. Meanwhile, surrounded by gorgeous Goyard and glistening Van Cleef goods, BG's Senior Vice President Linda Fargo and display designer David Hoey-signed copies of their new Assouline tome, Windows at Bergdorf Goodman. Once fabulously glam-boyant opera performer Prince Poppycock took the stage, however, all bets were off. Sipping champagne through a crazy straw and decked out in full baroque garb, the America's Got Talent favorite treated spellbound fans to a few tunes. Among those who popped by? Designers Philip Crangi, Francisco Costa, and none other than Alber Elbaz himself. We guess despite his crazy-busy night, the allure of a little song-and-dance was just too good for the Lanvin designer to pass up. Breaking: Justin Bieber is Being Shot for Love Magazine Posted: 19 Nov 2010 10:50 AM PST Does the fashion world Love Justin Bieber? A source inside Conde Nast has confirmed to us that the Biebs is being shot for the British fashion mag and Tabitha Simmons is styling. We’re not sure in what capacity he is being shot–we’d be surprised if it’s the cover, but it’s a possibility. Tabitha Simmons is really big, and Justin Bieber is obviously a huge star, though his fan base is presumably younger than most Love readers. Plus, he’s no stranger to fashion glossies. He was in Elle‘s September issue with Kim Kardashian, and has had spreads in Interview and V Man. He’s also been targeting the fashion & beauty markets with his scented dog tags, nail polishes and upcoming fragrance. We wouldn’t be surprised if a clothing line is in the works. We think it’s a surprising choice, but we love Love and are super excited to see what they do with the adorable teen heartthrob. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 19 Nov 2010 10:30 AM PST Hamish Has a Chanel Dress and Purple Hands: Hamish Bowles, Vogue‘s European Editor at Large and, most recently, curator of the Balenciaga: Spanish Master exhibition, has his own collection of couture as well. His favorites include some of Galliano’s first collection and a 1926 beaded Chanel dress. Now if someone could just tell us why his hands are purple… {NOWNESS} How to Make It as a Blogger: Want to be the next big style blogger? We think some level of innate style sense is necessary, but if you’re looking for the recipe for style blogging success, now there’s a hilarious flow chart. There are important details, like bangs and nail art and you must choose a “signature pose.” Might we suggest the “stylish squatter?” {Refinery29} Polaroids Are Still Cool: Band of Outsiders designer Scott Sternberg talks about why he shoots his lookbook with a Polaroid and uses his friends instead of models. It’s not just because of his Godard obsession or that it saves money. It’s because that’s what he sees inside his head. Also, check out some outtakes from shoots with Marisa Tomei, Jason Schwartzman, Michelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst. {The Moment} Zac Posen Hearts Martha Stewart: Apparently, Zac Posen has a spare six weeks to spend interning for Martha Stewart. He bid on and won the internship last week at the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai gala. Perhaps he’s planning on releasing a line of housewares? We’re confused. {Racked NY} This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Ashton Kutcher, Nina Garcia, and Others Invest $1 Million in Fashism Posted: 19 Nov 2010 09:07 AM PST Fashism, the Hot or Not for street style, just closed its first round of funding, and some pretty major celebs have signed on. Ashton Kutcher, Nina Garcia, Demi Moore, and a bunch of investment firms–SV Angel, High Line Venture Partners, NV Investment, Vast Ventures, and Rick Webb–have raised $1 million for the New York-based company. Fashism‘s premise is stupidly smart: Users post pictures of outfits and others give their feedback by voting and commenting on each look. It’s particularly popular with teenagers, but we’ve been surprised by how many late-twenty-somethings are into it as well. What’s the injection of cash going to do for Fashism? Well for one, they’ll be able to hire more people and add new functions to the site. Given the influx of user-generated e-commerce in the fashion space, some retail component makes sense. Maybe that’s why FourSquare’s Dennis Crowley and plaid shirt hero Steven Alan have come on board as advisers. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Olivia Palermo To Get Her Own Show Posted: 19 Nov 2010 08:40 AM PST Thought that you’d seen the last of Olivia Palermo on the small screen after The City got the boot? Think again. The villainous star of the MTV scripted reality series has confirmed that she is working on her own TV show, Elle.com is reporting. "I'm currently working on a TV project, my own show,” Palermo said at Mango’s spring show in Barcelona this week (she and boyfriend Johannes Huebl star in the brand’s latest campaign). It’s doubtful Palermo’s new show will have anything to do with the mag that she “worked” at while on The City, and it’s only coincidence that her former “employer” is breaking the news. Though it would be awesome if Palermo’s City enemy Erin Kaplan could have a few cameos on her new show to mutter some cutting asides. Just for old times’ sake.
