Lanvin for H&M: The Full Collection

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 06:38 AM PDT

Happy Lanvin for H&M Day! American press previews the H&M for Lanvin collaboration later today, but the UK has already seen the hotly anticipated collection and Vogue.com UK posted the whole shebang. It’s every bit as good as you hoped it would be, so we’ve posted the the entire women’s line. The dresses–especially the floral prints and one-shoulders–voluminous short skirts, and pointy-toed heels (especially the red patent leather ones with the ribbons at the ankles)–are some of our favorites.

We expect sleeping bags for blocks around H&M’s across the US as November 23rd approaches. Will you be in line? What are you dying to get your hands on?

Lanvin for H&M: The Full-Length Fashion Video is Out

Posted: 02 Nov 2010 05:40 AM PDT

Remember that tease of a fashion video for the Lanvin for H&M collaboration we got a few weeks ago, courtesy of a fashion blogger who won a contest? The one that showed a glimpse of Alber Ebaz as a young man, furiously sketching until he became his current age, interspersed with mysterious scenes of models as maids in a long hallway, models in black Lanvin x H&M dresses in some giant hotel? The full video is out now (thank you H&M marketing gods) and it’s delightfully quirky.

Lanvin x H&M Unveiled

This afternoon, we get to the see the Lanvin x H&M collection in the flesh at the Swedish retailer’s New York showroom. But until then, we’ll have to be content with these pictures from the Tokyo presentation. Our friends at Racked got their hands on several images. So far, things are looking good. We love you, Alber!

The Ulimate Military Anoraks (Because Quilted Parkas are Ugly)

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 02:30 PM PDT

Last year, I bought a lovely and warm quilted parka from Uniqlo. And I only wore it once.

Why? Because it was ugly. Unless you’re someone like Sally Singer–who can pull off a floor length version with aplomb–or you’ve scored one of Norma Kamali‘s classic sleeping bag coats, quilted parkas are a bit hopeless. At least when it comes to looking “put together.”

Enter the military anorak. Guys have been wearing these pumped-up versions of your fall army jacket for seasons upon seasons, but this is the first year that I’ve found several warm styles for women.

I’m going with Relwen‘s version–it’s really, truly warm and won’t break the bank at $500. (Yves Salomon‘s version will, but it’s is an investment piece. As in, you’re investing in your health by keeping warm this winter!)

Click through for this season’s top anoraks.

Taylor Swift’s Perfume Doesn’t Have to Smell Bad: Celebrity Fragrances We Actually Like

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 01:00 PM PDT

Taylor Swift is following in the footsteps of pretty much every celebrity ever and launching her own fragrance. The wise-beyond-her-years (?) singer just inked a deal with Elizabeth Arden to develop her own unique scent, set to appear on shelves next fall.

I’m assuming the fragrance will be quite sophisticated, since Taylor likes dating older men and all….

Okay, not really. That was a joke. I’m expecting it to smell bad. Really, really bad. But let’s not give up hope just yet.

There are a few celebrity scents I actually like. (A snap poll of my friends–inside and outside of fashion–suggests that I may be the only person on earth willing to admit this.)

Celebrity fragrances that I not only can stomach, but wouldn’t mind wearing:

Five Lessons Learned From Getting a Brazilian Blowout

Posted: 01 Nov 2010 10:51 AM PDT

I have a confession: Last spring, I got a Brazilian blowout. You know, that keratin treatment that’s been making headlines for years regarding its formaldehyde content. I have incredibly thick, coarse, curly hair, which I’ve been relaxing/straightening/damaging for years. The keratin treatment is the first that actually made my hair feel healthier. (Well, formaldehyde is a preservative….)

All joking aside, I’m not endorsing any of these treatments. Before you get it done you should do as much research as you can, talk to as many medical professionals as you can, and weigh the risks. Whether or not I’m going to have the treatment done again is still up in the air. But I did learn several important lessons from trying it:

1. Sodium is bad for your hair.
When I was in my teens, and in the depths of my Medusa-dom, there was a spam email floating around about how sodium lauryl sulfate was a terrible carcinogen. It said that you should throw everything away in your bathroom cabinet that contained anything with at least one of those words on the ingredient list. Unfortunately, pretty much every shampoo and conditioner on the market, as well as many hair products, contain some sort of sulfate.

You can’t use shampoos with sodium when you have the Brazilian blowout. And you know what? I never will again, regardless of whether that email spam was true. For people like me with naturally coarse, frizzy hair, sodium lauryl sulfate exacerbates the problem. The brazilian blowout only lasts for three months, but my hair is still more manageable than it was beforehand because I’m using gentler shampoos and conditioners. (However, I will still use dry shampoo, which I’m sure contains some sort of sulfate. That stuff is my crack.)

2. Traditional relaxers and Japanese straighteners are not worth it.
My hair is very dry, but it was literally straw when I was using a traditional relaxer. Now that my hair is semi-touchable I’ll never go back to traditional treatments, even if that means letting it go natural.

3. I am so happy that I don’t dye my hair. My hair is very dark brown, with some light brown highlights that have emerged as a result of sun exposure. (My hair is also just getting lighter: I’ve noticed a couple of grays popping up.) I played with temporary dyes in middle school, but since then I’ve kept my hair dark brown. And I’m so happy about it. I can’t even imagine putting my hair through a coloring process every three months. I feel lucky that I am content with my natural color.

4. Researching beauty treatments is essential. Years ago, it seemed insane that people would actually stop using sulfate products in their hair. Now I’m a full-on believer that they’re harmful. It’s important to research a product or treatment thoroughly so that you can make the decision that’s right for you.

5. Flat irons suck. If I’m going to apply heat to my hair–which I probably do every four or five months, letting my hair air dry the rest of the time–it’s going to be via traditional blow dry rather than a flat iron. Not only is it horrible for your hair, the result doesn’t look as natural.
