Adam Lippes Collaborates With Whitney Artists, Gilt Sells the Results

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 04:10 PM PDT

I spent last night at Adam Lippes‘ fabulous penthouse apartment in Greenwich Village.

The occasion? We (and when I say we, I mean myself plus a very smart-looking crowd, including Meredith Melling Burke, lovely in an pleated pumpkin-colored maxi dress) were invited to celebrate Lippes’ t-shirt collaboration with four young artists selected by the Whitney–Matthew Brannon, EV Day, Ellen Harvey and Phoebe Washburn. The tees, $48-$68, will go on sale this Thursday at noon on Gilt.com.

Guests mingled amongst the Dash Snows and the Alexander Calder (I only saw one, but there may have been more), admiring Lippes’ cool collection of art, as well as the t-shirts these four artists had designed for his brand. Brannon, who was there to celebrate, got to see his work shown off by the waitstaff. All in all, it was a lovely evening for a lovely cause: A percentage of the sale’s proceeds will go to the Whitney Museum of Art, where Lippes is a co-chair.

The tees will also be on sale at the ADAM boutique and the Whitney store, but for a higher price. Per usual, it’s worth logging onto Gilt if you want to get your hands on one.

Tavi and Lourdes: A Quickie Analysis of the Two Most Famous Tween Style Bloggers

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 03:45 PM PDT

The comparison was inevitable. When Madonna’s 13-old-daughter starts blogging about fashion, it’s hard not to look to Tavi, the OG tween fashion blogging phenom.

Even Tavi knew it when she posted on Jezebel today, “I don’t like critiquing other fashion blogs because they’re usually personal style diaries about what the writer likes and wears and there’s no point in saying someone’s taste is wrong, and in this case especially, my doing so would just make people compare us to one another.”

Too late. We’re doing it anyway. But in a nice way, promise Tavi. And Lourdes has only written one post, so we’re aware that we’re limited in our means for comparison.

Tavi started blogging over two years ago (on March 31st, 2008 to be precise), so it makes more sense to look at her first posts next to Lourdes, aka “Lola,” Leon’s first post.

Tavi was just 12 when she started out. Lourdes is 13. They have both have a thing for John Hughes movies (Tavi mentions watching 16 Candles three times in three days, Lourdes has a still from Pretty in Pink in her “Things I Love” collage). They both write in conversational, over-excitable tween speak which means excess punctuation, a heavy hand on the caps lock key, capitalization, creative re-spellings, and tween slang.

To wit:
“I am totally obsessivo about ’80s shorts… You know the kind that makes your butt look kinda big, with a grunge-looking shirt tucked in. It's kinda nerdy but I love it,” writes Lola. “And the ’80s are another huge obsession of mine, which is totally amazingly awesome because Material Girl…HELLO!”

And in one of Tavi’s early posts about Marianne Faithful as her style icon she writes, “Marianne Faithfull, why can’t I get no SATISFACTION??? (Haha, get it? That was Tavi’s play-on-words. RS fans UNITE!)”

They’ve also both got the personal style blogger self-photo pose down pat.

But that’s pretty much where the similarities stop. Lourdes is the daughter of MADONNA (look I’m heavy handed with the caps lock too!) and she’s blogging to shill for her mom’s new “Material Girl” line for Macy’s. Her first post, which went up yesterday, is pretty hard to access because the site keeps crashing do to the rush of traffic, and she’s already received close to 500 comments. It’s fun to read because you get a sense that she really speaks like she writes, but it’s more fun to picture Madonna as a mom forbidding her daughter to dye her hair until she turns 14. Tavi’s been at it for over two years, and while the “precocious 12-year-old fashion blogger” thing was a novelty and good for attention in the beginning, she’s got longevity and designers like her because she’s clever and funny and, well, generally seems to know her shit.

Warning: If you’ve got some time to kill, going back through the Tavi archives is a black hole. It’s fascinating to watch her style evolve, and watch her photos go from snap shots of her friends in her school play to shots of Rodarte’s last collection from the front row.

Three New York Girls Wear Jeffrey Monteiro’s Resort Collection Three Different Ways

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 02:00 PM PDT

Double duty designer Jeffrey Monteiro recently shot his Resort 2011 look book on the streets of Nolita.

But instead of bringing in professional models, the industry veteran asked four of his friends to throw on some frocks and style them in their own special way. The final book will only feature a single interpretation of each look, but we thought it’d be fun to show you how three approached one. The star of this trio? Resort 2011’s Kuru dress.

Ten Questions for The City

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 01:00 PM PDT

Whitney is pissed you guys.

1. When Erin and Olivia are meeting with Joe Zee, why can’t Olivia get up and walk two steps to grab a notebook from Joe? We’re glad she refused to move so we could witness a deliciously frosty transaction between Olivia and Erin in which Olivia points at Erin and asks her to fetch the notebook for her in a tone we can only imagine she reserves for wait staff and her cleaning lady.

2. Foreshadowing much? How many times did Kelly Cutrone say “very” as in it would be a “very bad thing” if Roxy doesn’t get Whitney’s line on some random Canadian pop star? 15. We counted.

3. Jian, who produces Canadian pop sensation Lights, is, according to Kelly Cutrone, the “Ryan Seacrest of Canada.” What does that even mean?

4. Why does Prabal Gurung have such a soothing voice? We could listen to him say things like “burnt plastic pallettes” and “laser cut organza” all day in his elegant Nepalese accent.

5. Does Olivia secretly know what she’s doing? We must, begrudgingly, admit that, aside from that scene where her editor has to tell her to take notes, Olivia did her job this episode. The look she pulled from Prabal was a standout during Elle’s Martha Stewart segment, and the blue tuxedo pants really did pop on camera. Props Olivia. Just this time.

6. Didn’t you always wonder what TV show hosts and their celeb guests say to each other right before they start taping? If you’re Robbie Myers, apparently you say to Martha Stewart, “You’re so pretty.” Twice. As if you were trying to win over the cool girl in middle school. Hey, whatever works.

7. Why so sad Derek Lam girl? Despite Erin’s urging that the model in Derek Lam smile and not look so “depressed” during Elle’s Martha Stewart segment she sulked on stage anyway. Maybe Martha just scares her?

8. When did Whitney decide to grow a pair? Whit’s usually a total pushover next to Roxy but in this episode she’s the aggressor and we liked it. After the Lights jacket debacle Whitney tells Roxy, “Kelly gave you this responsibility and if you can’t pull through you shouldn’t be doing this anymore.” And then later, flippantly, “So then move out.” More of this Whitney please.

9. Martha Stewart in Alexander Wang!? I love that out of all the looks from Elle’s segment on up and coming designers (which included Alexander Wang, Jason Wu, Derek Lam, Prabal Gurung, and Joseph Altuzarra) – Martha wants the Alexander Wang varsity jacket for her own closet. Amazing. We can see it now, Martha Stewart and Erin Wasson, BFF.

10. Where was Kelly Cutrone in this episode? Even though Whitney really stepped up her game, it wasn’t enough to make up for Kelly’s limited air time. We did enjoy watching the bemused look on her face as she watched Whitney and Roxy hash out their strategy to put Lights in Whitney Eve, like she knew it would be a disaster from the start. She’s like some fashion soothsayer.

Adventures In Copyright: Kelsi Dagger Takes a Stab at Alexander Wang

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 12:00 PM PDT

Alexander Wang’s Freja bootie became an instant “it” shoe the second it hit the Spring 2010 runways.

So it’s no surprise that Kelsi Dagger (the juniors line from the designers behind Pour La Victoire) is putting out a very similar version for $185 (around $350 less than the Freja). And it seems Rachel Zoe has no qualms about endorsing a good knock-off – they’re one her “picks” on Piperlime.

Thanks to reader Katie for the tip!

You Can’t Be Tata Harper, But You Can Use Her Products

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 11:00 AM PDT

Yesterday, I walked into the most magnificent apartment overlooking the grounds of the American Museum of Natural History and was greeted by a vision of loveliness, Tata Harper. Tata has launched a 100% natural skincare line. If she could bottle her own essence and sell it, she would make a fortune. She just had a baby three months ago and looks more stunning than Gisele did postpartum. Besides being green-eyed and blonde, she is also brainy; she was an industrial engineer in her native Colombia.

Tata conceived of and started the line five years ago after being unable to find products that she wanted to use. She wanted potions that were luxurious and 100% natural. She was "tired of putting cancer juice" on her skin. Now, while that is mildly sensationalistic, I’m totally on board with her concept of non-synthetic, plant-derived, almost entirely organic ingredients.

The R&D process took Tata four years, and she worked with experts in herbalism, botany, and aromatherapy. Oh, and did I mention she has an organic farm in Vermont? She does. This is where all the products are manufactured, in small batches every month. Her ingredients are sourced from such far-flung locales as Israel, the Czech Republic, Tasmania, the UK, and France.

The results of her four years of work are pretty amazing. I am a complete potion junkie and have slathered all manner of things on my face. Tata gave me a mini facial using her products and I was blown away.

The Regenerating Cleanser, containing pomegranate and apricot seed powder, was heaven in a bottle. My skin was baby soft. The Replenishing Nutrient Complex, containing 29 active ingredients, is a "multi-vitamin for the face." I was hesitant to try the moisturizer, because it was a sweltering rainforest sort of afternoon in NYC, and the last thing I needed was moisture. She assured me that it had a matifying effect. I walked 8 blocks to the subway then stood in a sweltering subway stop for 10 minutes. A quick peek in the mirror revealed a dewy and not the least bit shiny glow.

Her products are currently available on her site TataHarper.com. Look for wider availability soon. Prices range from $45 to $150.

Topshop’s F/W ‘10 Lookbook Makes Us Long for Shearling and Trapper Hats

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 10:00 AM PDT

Weather-wise, it’s finally starting to feel like summer, which, in NYC, is not always a good thing. This unbearable heat should make wool capes and shearling coats unfathomable, but this Topshop F/W ‘10 stuff looks so comfy and cute. We’re ready to bundle up.

With Topshop, no season comes without a theme. This season, there are four: Hi Performance, Out of the Wild, Dark Nouveau, and The Outsiders. We are especially fond of the post-apocalyptic, animalistic elements of Out of the Wild and classic-with-a-twist feel of The Outsiders. We are also pleased with the lack of florals, harem pants and studs.Oh, and we’re really digging the shoes.

Fashion News Roundup: Joanna Coles Haul Vlogs, and Lady Gaga (Might Have) Gone Drag for Vogue Hommes

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 09:47 AM PDT

Get a Clue: L.A. boutique Confederacy has teamed up with Francisco Costa to reproduce and sell the iconic white Calvin Klein dress that Alicia Silverstone wore in Clueless. (Recall the scene between Cher and her father: “What the hell is that?” “A dress.” “Says who?” “Calvin Klein.”) The dress will be sold online and in-store for $915. We’re, like, totally excited. {Daily Front Row}

Taylor-Made: Rachel Zoe’s former assistant Taylor Jacobson is now working as Kate Beckinsale’s stylist. It’s a high profile gig for Jacobson. Last thing we heard, she was consulting for denim line Kasil. Maybe her former boss won’t be so harsh now. {Hollywood Life}

The Teacher As Student: You probably wouldn’t expect the Editor-In-Chief of Marie Claire to be taking her cues from haul vloggers Blair and Elle Fowler (ages 16 and 21, respectively), but that’s exactly what she did. Check out Coles’ “What’s In My Bag” spoof vlog. {Marie Claire}

Dude Looks Like A Lady:
A recent Vogue Hommes Japan shoot with model “Jo Calderone” has got little monsters speculating as to whether “Jo” is really Lady Gaga in drag. We wouldn’t be surprised. Scroll to the bottom of the post for the had sell. {Oh No They Didn’t}

An Itch You Can Scratch: If you can’t get enough of V Magazine, you’re in luck. V’s “Sexy Body” issue is now available on the mag’s newly-designed website in a limited-print scratch-off edition, available online only. {V Magazine}
