Five Keys To Jenna Lyons’ Success

Posted: 15 Jul 2010 07:00 AM PDT

Jenna Lyons was named president of J.Crew yesterday. The news arrives after several consecutive raises and bonuses for the creative director. Want to get where Jenna is someday? Here are five key components of her success.

1. A Great Mentor
What can we say? Mickey Drexler is a retailing genius. He recognized Jenna’s talent in 2003 and helped her to design not only for her customer, but herself. The reason J.Crew works so well is because the designers actually wear and like the clothes that they design. Not so with plenty of other high street brands.

2. Consistency. Jenna’s been working at J.Crew since the early nineties, and while we’re sure she’s had plenty of offers to work for other designers and retailers, she’s stuck around, slowly moving up the ranks. Now, I’m not advocating sticking with a dead-end job, but it does feel like people tend to hop scotch from company-to-company without really considering the consequences these days. In the past, my mentors have said to me, “Don’t leave a job until you’ve stopped learning.” Just think how different high street fashion would be if Jenna had left J.Crew four or five years out of school.

3. Modesty. Jenna may be a tough boss (we’ve heard as much), but she’s also incredibly modest and thankful for the talent around her. I’ve seen her at functions introducing herself to prestigious, higher-end designers, and she’s always so excited and honored to meet them, even if she is at their caliber (and probably much better-paid). She’s also quick to credit her team, from the designers to the stylists, for the great collections J.Crew puts out each season.

4. Some Semblance of Work/Life Balance. Have you seen Jenna’s husband? He’s like, ridiculously good looking. And her kid is pretty perfect. But that’s not the point–Mr. Jenna could be an ogre, and the kid a terror. It would still be impressive that Jenna decided to not give up on having a family and a life outside of J.Crew. So many people–women and men–are miserable in their personal lives. And that most certainly affects their performance at work.

5. A Great Eye. I mean, really. That’s what it really comes down to. She knows what she likes, she knows what she doesn’t like, and she’s great at interpreting high fashion and high style (two separate things, mind you) for a mass audience. Think about the collaborations J.Crew is doing–Fenton/Fallon, Essie, Miriam Haskell. These are calculated by someone who knows what she likes better than 99.9% of the population. And she knows what they’re going to like, too.

In Honor of Bastille Day, French Fashion in Red White and Blue. C’est Classique!

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 04:00 PM PDT

A landmark event of the French Revolution, Bastille Day commemorates the 1789 storming of the Bastille prison. And we’re going to use it as an excuse to prattle on about French fashion. So, in honor of Bastille Day, we present five high-style picks from five of our favorite French design houses.

Who Wore it Better: Tavi VS Kiki, or, Tavi Just Grows Into This Miu Miu Dress

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 03:00 PM PDT

Kirsten Dunst and Tavi Gevinson both gave the Rodarte a break for this dress from Miu Miu’s Spring 2010 collection. Kirsten made our best dressed the other week in this number. Miu Miu also loaned Tavi the dress, seen here in one of her many self-shot photo series. We think Tavi could easily be Kirsten in ten years, in the same dress, with a slightly more grown out version of the same haircut. We prefer the length on Kirsten (because the dress actually fits her) and the way she makes it look like it’s been in her closet for years, but Tavi looks pretty cute, too. Who do you think wore it better?

As We Say A Fond Farewell to The Hills, A Look Back At Lauren Conrad’s Standout Style

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 02:30 PM PDT

Lauren Conrad made a rare appearance with the entire cast of The Hills last night on the series’ finale special. Among all of the girls on the show, Lauren has come to the forefront as the breakout style star. Teenagers all over the country emulate her looks (especially that side braid), and the phrase “as seen on Lauren Conrad” can cause an item to swiftly sell out. We’ve watched her taste evolve from that of a sporty high-school senior to a sophisticated young woman who counts Marc Jacobs and Phillip Lim among her favorites. She’s no Jane Birkin, and we aren’t sure that she should be considered a fashion “expert” as her yet-to-be-released style book professes, but the girl’s come a long, long way since she made her debut on Laguna Beach back in 2004.

Take a look.

Ten Questions for The City

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 12:18 PM PDT

It’s our last “Ten Questions for The City” for the season, and it could be our last recap ever. If it is the last episode (maybe, hopefully, they’ve got one more season left), at least last night’s season finale was action packed.

Here goes.

1. Who is going to be the face of Elle.com? Who? Who? I don’t care but the show would really like us to. It was always going to be Olivia.

2. Did you want to feel kinda bad about yourself? Enter Karolina Kurkova dripping wet in an unzipped bathing suit. Thanks!

3. Does Olivia’s voice become higher pitched in Japan? We’re pretty she takes it up an octave when talking with Akiko Mori, Elle Japan’s EIC. Also, is Olivia nicer in Japan?

4. What is Olivia’s “special secret?” Akiko Mori says she’s going to ask her about it at the Tibi launch party. What could it be? Maybe she’s like V.I.C.I (that’s Voice Input Child Idenicant”) from Small Wonder and she’s really a fembot with an access panel in her back.

5. Where is Roxy’s backless jumpsuit from? Anyone? Bueller? I want it.

6. What is with Alison Brod and the pink? We get it–it’s part of the brand (we’ve been to their offices and yes, they are really that pink and candy-filled)–but it seems excessive that Alison herself is decked in a pink strapless mini and takes notes on hot pink stickies.

7. Seth, we know you’re gunning for more airtime (and we’re not mad at you for it) but don’t you know Erin is the queen of zingers? Don’t even try to rival her. Seth offers, “Olivia in Japan seems a little bit like ‘Lost in Translation.’” Erin, without missing a beat, counters, “Olivia in America seems like ‘Lost in Translation.’” Burn.

8. Does Olivia have an especially small face? I never thought so, but the Japanese folks at the Tibi event sure did. Apparently, having a small face is a compliment in Japan. (Thanks for cluing me in readers!)

9. Why should you be afraid of Kelly Cutrone? Here’s why: “I have better things to do than defending myself for getting fired…it makes you like like an idiot…I don’t need to defend my agency against a girl who wears pink. It’s just a waste of my time. Bye Whitney, leave my office now.” To be fair, Kelly’s trained Whitney well. She stood up pretty well against Kelly’s devastating, shame-inducing, reaming. I’ve been chewed out by bosses before but I might have even cried after this one.

10. Nooo! Would Erin really leave Elle because of Olivia? After Olivia is announced as the “face of Elle.com” she rubs it in Erin’s face, asking her “You ok with that?” Then Seth mutters something to Erin about “if you weren’t thinking of leaving before you probably are now.” Please don’t go Erin.

Piperlime to Replace “Bluefly Accessories Wall” on Project Runway

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 11:00 AM PDT

For those of you out there still watching, season eight of Project Runway begins July 29 on Lifetime.

There are several changes in store for the long-running program. First, each episode of the new season will have a running time of ninety minutes (yes, you heard that right), which we can only hope will mean more Tim Gunn screen time. Next, the number of contestants has increased to seventeen from the usual sixteen.

Finally, the famed “Bluefly Accessories Wall” will change to the “Piperlime Accessories Wall”. The company has redesigned the wall by painting it Piperlime’s signature green, and will have a shopable “accessories wall” on its website so that viewers can purchase styles that are featured on the show.

Piperlime’s recent claim to fame is its collaboration with another reality TV fixture, Rachel Zoe, who frequently lists her favorite items on the site in her very own “Rachel Zoe’s Picks” section.

What does this sponsor swap mean for the show, especially since its ratings have been on a steady decline?

Bringing in Piperlime might be an attempt to keep the show fresh, since its products and editorial content seem to cater to a much younger audience. The site also plans to add exclusive, weekly behind-the-scenes footage from Project Runway, allowing fans more access to the designers’ insights than ever before.

I’m not really sure what to think of the swap. If I were one of the show’s designers, I would probably prefer the Bluefly accessories wall–whose items are much more high-end–in styling my designs. However, Piperlime’s products are more current, trend-conscious, and for the most part, significantly less expensive. Project Runway creators might prefer Piperlime’s accessibility, especially when it has the potential to draw in a new batch of young viewers who shop on the site.

Which accessories wall would you choose from?

Basso & Brooke Creates Cute, Expensive Picnic Sets

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 10:00 AM PDT

If you're planning a drunken picnic in the park this summer, well, this probably wouldn't be the least conspicuous way to do it. But, it might be the most fashionable. Design duo Basso & Brooke (Katy Perry, Beyonce and Michelle Obama have worn their clothes) are winners of London's prestigious Fashion Fringe Award and have since become known for their use of colorful digital prints. They used this skill to design prints inspired by Turning Leaf wines for a limited edition dining set collection to kick off Turning Leaf's Designers in Residence program, available exclusively at The Shop at Bluebird on King's Road in London.

In addition to a silk blanket and cushions, the "Al Fresco Dining Set" will include two limited edition bottles of Turning Leaf wine. We would suggest keeping these wine bottles well out of reach of any children. They are so colorful and cartoon-ish, we think they look more likely to contain fruit punch than chardonnay or zinfandel. Basso & Brooke said this of the collaboration on their blog:

“People have pointed out to us that wine and fashion don't immediately feel like natural partners. Initially that might seem to be the case–as fashion has greater visual emphasis than wine. But through our collaboration with Turning Leaf we've noticed that they share some vital qualities, beyond the fact that both revolve around the changing seasons.”

We think this might be a stretch, but we definitely like fashion and we definitely like wine and these dining sets are really pretty, if not a bit impractical. If we lived in London, had an extra £3,000 and time to spend leisurely afternoons picnicking and drinking wine, these would absolutely be at the top of our summer shopping list. So until we become Gwyneth Paltrow, we'll probably stick with tote bags and maybe our dad's $6 Marc Jacobs beer cooler. Would you splurge on a designer picnic set?

Google Wants to Be More Fashionable

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 08:00 AM PDT

Google thinks fashion bloggers understand social media better than those covering other industries. So one of the world’s most powerful companies is tapping the brains of some of the world’s most powerful bloggers in order to get a better sense of how they consume and use media. Google is calling the program GStyle.

At the helm of the project is Tony Wang of post.fashionism.com.

A long list of bloggers were emailed by Wang on Monday, asking if they were interested in being interviewed by Google. The interview would consist of questions regarding “how you use internet technologies, your challenges as a blogger, and how Google can help you become the best blogger possible.”

The program, currently in pilot mode, is not a secret operation, but is in internal. The information Google is gathering is only for Googlers. At least for now.

What’s more, we learned today that both Garance Dore and Tommy Ton would be giving are in the pipeline, but not confirmed, to give speeches at the Google offices in New York at some point over the next couple of months. Their appearances are related to the GStyle project.
