Ask Chris: What Should I Wear to My Next Formal? Posted: 07 Jul 2010 02:30 PM PDT Dear Chris, Recently it was junior prom at my high school. I had some difficulty trying to find a prom dress as there is no definite guide as to what is an appropriate prom dress or what a fabulous prom dress should be. I was wondering if you had any ideas or examples as to what is prom chic and what isn’t. Dear Prom Queen, As far as high school dances are concerned, I would err on the side of something classic, with a nice silhouette, and you can load up with costume jewelry, hair, makeup, and a fake eyelash goes a long way for easy glamor. See if you can find images of Kate Moss at her 30th birthday party – its the epitome of effortless party style in a little black dress, heavy false eyelashes, and like a tophat or something. I remember this being the absolute HIT on the dance floor – her dress & neon bits glowed under the black light amidst the other girls in long, sad dresses. High school is about having fun and being creative. This was a great option that cost no money and became legendary at Bainbridge High School. In my opinion, go for the gold with an interpretive bed-sheet toga, but if you're not feeling the fashion fantasy then stick to something short, strapless, and simple. xx Got a question for Chris? Breaking: Olivier Zahm is Writing a Book About Carine Roitfeld Posted: 07 Jul 2010 01:16 PM PDT Purple’s Olivier Zahm is working on the first biographical book about Carine Roitfeld, set to be published by Rizzoli in the fall of 2011. All we can say is: Ahhhh! Since it’s Zahm–and Rizzoli–we’re assuming the tome will be image-heavy. Not that we’re complaining. We received the following correspondence announcing the news and another tidbit of info that made us squeal with delight:
We hope she answers our question! What do you want us to ask? |
Posted: 07 Jul 2010 01:00 PM PDT 1. Why is Roxy so shocked that an 800 square-foot furnished apartment (with working fireplace) in Manhattan costs $4,000? Haven’t you been living in Manhattan? It is really really really expensive. This is why those of us who are not on scripted MTV reality shows either have roommates or move in with our significant others within the first six months of dating, and live in the outer boroughs. We love how, when Roxy tries to sell the place to her dad later on by telling him “It’s four grand but in New York that’s a deal,” he’s not buying it at all. Kudos to you for standing your ground father Olin. 2. Ok, so this is not about The City, but, Angela Chase, is that you shilling for Latisse? Why? 3. From Kate, the executive accessories editor, to Erin, to Kate Lanphear, is there some memo that all the cool kids at Elle have bleach blond pin-straight hair? Note: Olivia did not get the memo. 5. Has Whitney shed her California nice-girl to become a hard-assed city girl? Roxy certainly thinks so. “I think New York City and Kelly Cutrone have caused her to get a thicker skin,” she tells her dad (who we think is pretty awesome). And even if she’s not throwing elbows for a seat on the subway, we’re starting to think she’s developing a thick skin too. And it looks good on her. 6. Where does Alexis Bryan Morgan find the patience to deal with Olivia? Maybe it has something to do with being from Texas? Either that or she seems sedated. More power to her because we couldn’t tolerate that back talk with such poise and grace. 7. “I’m not a therapist…I don’t care how upset you are, you better look like you’re having the time of your fucking life and that you believe in that charity.” Why does Kelly Cutrone always know just what to say? 8. Does that Whitney Eve jacket on Ashley Greene look off to anyone else? Despite Olivia’s requisite bitchiness towards all things Whitney (“I love your skirt and your shoes” she tells Ashley), we’re kinda with her on this one. Ashley Greene is smoking hot and that jacket still looks kinda wrong. 9. Does drinking coffee through a straw really help to avoid coffee stained teeth? Probably not, but we’re still impressed with your genius Erin. 10. Why does Whitney’s paint-peely apartment window seem so crusty as she gazes all sad-faced out of it when Roxy moves out? It certainly looks shabby next to Roxy’s potential new apartment. But crusty window aside, we know her apartment rented for $7k/month. |
I Need, I Want, I Have to Have: PS- I Made This… Summer Woven Necklace Posted: 07 Jul 2010 12:00 PM PDT It’s been two summers and I’m still really, really into anything that even remotely resembles a friendship bracelet. Now, the wicked talented Erica Domesek–she of our favorite DIY website, PS- I Made This–has created a rope necklace that I just can’t resist. Domesek partnered with adorable boutique Tauk–in Montauk, obviously–to release a limited edition run of the macrame necklaces she’s been wearing all summer. And yes, she made them. Each is handwoven with string, bright ropes, and ultra suede. I’m partial to the navy, black, and white, but let’s be real, they’re all cute. I’m heading out to Montauk in two weeks, which means my first stop will be Tauk. And at $80, it won’t drain me of spending money. Click through to see more colors! |

Ken Steals Barbie’s Spotlight; Goes High Fashion For Esquire UK Posted: 07 Jul 2010 11:00 AM PDT Even though Ken is Barbie’s boyfriend (and has been since 1961) he has never really managed to step out from his girlfriend’s shadow. Barbie is the star. Ken has always been the Gabriel Aubry to her Halle Berry, nay, the Ken Paves to her Jessica Simpson. But now it’s Ken’s time to shine. He’s got a role in summer blockbuster Toy Story 3 and he’s wearing Prada and Gucci in a six-page editorial for Esquire UK. See, Burberry Prorsum (who designed the above look) was sensitive to Ken’s “masculinity” and that’s what’s important. The spread, which is equal parts cute and creepy, was styled by Catherine Hayward and shot by Matthew Donaldson. Jeremy Langmead, Esquire’s EIC, says it was it was great working with Ken since “there were no tantrums,” but his hard plastic body seems to have limited his range. It’s like he just stands there. More variety next time Kenny! Check out Ken’s high fashion debut and some behind the scenes action. |
Editorial Musical Chairs: A Visual Guide Posted: 07 Jul 2010 10:00 AM PDT
The Rundown: As we’re sure you all know, Sally Singer left Vogue to become Editor-in-Chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine and Stefano Tonchi left T to become Editor-in-Chief of W. Florence Kane, formerly a fashion writer at Vogue, has been named senior editor at C California Style Magazine and Patrick O'Connell, formerly Vogue's director of communications, has left the company. Anne Christensen left her position as T's fashion director and it will be interesting to see how she is replaced. Bee-Shyuan Chang left T to go to Stylecaster. W has lost Treena Lombardo (market director), Brooke Magnaghi (accessories and jewelry director), Dana Wood (senior fashion features editor), Julie Belcove (debuty editor) and Lauren Kill (asst. editorial manager). Beitressa Mandlebaum (accessories market editor) left W to become Eddie Borgo’s studio director. Ted Moncreiff has left Newsweek to join the magazine as executive editor. Jody Quon left New York to become W's creative director. Former Times writer and M.I.A.-challenger Lynn Hirschberg has also joined the magazine, as well as Karla Martinez formerly of Interview and, before that, T. In the realm of women's magazines, everyone went to Redbook. Meredith Rollins from Lucky is now executive editor. Jill Herzig from Glamour is now editor. Eve Bercovici is now executive beauty editor. Over here on the internet, everyone went to Elle.com, including Vogue's Genevieve Bahrenurg, Interview.com's Keith Pollock and Sydney Wasserman, Kat Thomsen from GQ.com and our very own Britt Aboutaleb from the website you're currently reading. (We guess Olivia Palermo still needs a lot of help._ Anna Pezik left Elle.com to become fashion and beauty director at Hearst Magazines Digital Media. Also, Danica Lo left the NY Post for Racked National and Sharon Clott left New York for the new MTV Style site. Ashley Halpern joined The Cut from Time Out. Nathan Cooper, formerly of C California Style Magazine took the biggest leap of all and became a foreign service officer with the U.S. Department of State. OK. On the corporate side of things, David Carey went from Conde Nast group president to Hearst Corp Worldwide magazine division president and Conde Nast's senior vice president Tom Florio has left the company. There are also a lot of rumors floating around like: Vogue’s Meredith Melling-Burke and Tabitha Simmons are going to T and Elle’s Kate Lanphear is going to Glamour. (Although these have not been confirmed by our sources.) We suspect this is not the end of Editorial Musical Chairs and especially anticipate more shuffling at Vogue and T. Definitely stay tuned. |
Fashion News Roundup: DVF For The Rockettes, The Bed Bugs’ Revenge & More Posted: 07 Jul 2010 09:40 AM PDT White Light, White Heat: Upscale L.A. brand Fred Segal has partnered with Akomplice to sell a Paint Project-friendly kit to promote positive environmental decision-making. How, you ask? If everyone painted their roofs white (thereby lowering cooling costs by reflecting the sun’s light instead of absorbing it), the amount of energy saved would be comparable to taking every car in the world off the roads for 11 (!) years. Looks like white just may be the new black. {Coolhunting} Fit To a T: We’re more than a little excited–Alexander Wang’s awesome fall accessories collection, in addition to the T by Alexander Wang line, will drop online this Thursday. {Alexander Wang} If You’ve Got It, Rockette: The Unstoppable Diane von Furstenberg has recently announced that she will be designing for the Radio City Rockettes. We can’t wait to see those high-kicks in what seems like a sensible getup–DVF’s swoon-worthy wrap rompers. {Refinery 29} |

Lou Doillon To Appear on Gossip Girl! Et Tu, Karl? Posted: 07 Jul 2010 08:08 AM PDT We had pretty much lost faith in Gossip Girl. That was, until the last few episodes of the third season were ahhh-mazing. Therefore, we were pretty excited to learn that Lou Doillon will make a cameo on GG this fall. (Thank you, WWD. Subscription required.) There’s also a rumor circulating that Karl Lagerfeld might guest star as well. (You see, the CW series is filming in Paris.) If that’s true, we will literally die. In that Rachel Zoe kind-of-way. |
