Our Latest Obsession: Ikat Print

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 04:02 PM PDT

Though the tribal print trend seems to be heading out the door, there is something so cute and chic about the ikat print specifically that makes us want to wear it in as many ways as possible. It’s been on a few runways recently, including as Dries Van Noten, Gucci, Marc and Balenciaga. Our love for ikat blossomed even more yesterday when we checked out Cynthia Vincent’s upcoming Resort 2011 accessories collection, which was full of the colorful print. See above for our inspiration and click through for some more accessible pieces you can buy right now.

Label to Watch: Barlow

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 03:30 PM PDT

The inspiration for Barlow ranges from Marshmallow Peeps to Saved by the Bell to the movie Tron. Only a couple of seasons old, Barlow is designed by Molly Girard Coonan, the granddaughter of iconic textile designer Alexander Girard. A protégé of Cynthia Vincent, Coonan possesses the bloodlines and the training to be a very talented designer. She also just seems really cool.

Her clothes are sexy yet tomboyish, girly but with an edge. For Fall ‘10, we are loving the brown leather jacket and skirt, the oversized jackets, velvet pants and a menswear shirt with cut-outs. For Holiday ‘10, we are really into an army green cargo vest, the not-too-frilly party dresses, and geometric paneling.

"I'm looking forward to this new era of fashion where people are dressing for fun, not taking themselves too seriously," Coonan says of her line. Barlow is fashion with a sense of humor, originality, wearability, and backed with the talent to pull it off. We have a hunch you’ll be seeing cool girls all over wearing these clothes in no time (if they aren’t already).

Last Night’s Party: Dree Hemingway Sparkles Atop The Standard for Ferragamo

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 03:03 PM PDT

We fought our way up the (intentionally) graffiti-ed stairs at The Standard last night to stop by Ferragamo’s launch party for their new fragrance, Attimo. It was the first official fête at the Standard’s new rooftop hot-spot, Le Bain, and the AstroTurf roof was packed with models and socialites.

The model of the evening was Dree Hemingway, the face of Ferragamo’s new scent. She looked stunning in a shimmering metallic floor-length gown from Ferragamo’s Fall 2010 collection, accented with gold Gaia Repossi jewelry.

Ferragamo’s got a loyal following with a more mature crowd, so they’re hoping Hemingway’s “it-girl” status will rope in a younger clientele.

“I mean, the fact that I like to wear is a good sign, right?” she told us. “It’s just easy to throw on.”

So how does it smell? We’ll let Hemingway give you her take: “I think it’s like a bouquet of white roses,” she said.

Sounds good. We’re no scent connoisseurs, but Attimo smells floral and light and posh to us.

But the most absurdly compelling feature of the party was the recreation of the ad campaign by way of an inflatable circular bed smack in the middle of the roof top. Two models in various states of undress lay in the bed, and party goers were encouraged to jump in with them. We watched hostess Chiara Clemente and Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld test out the mattress. And, no, we did not jump in bed with the models.

Caption This: What Is This Hollister Shopper Thinking?

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 01:20 PM PDT

Racked NY reported earlier that the bed bug infested Hollister Soho had their infamous zinc-nosed topless models positioned outside the store to tell shoppers they were closed until further notice. Now they’re gone and all that’s left is this hastily-made sign.

Inside the Garment Center: Yeohlee Teng Takes Us To Regal Originals

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 12:13 PM PDT

Designer Yeohlee Teng is a leader in the fight to save the Garment Center. Not only does she work closely with Made in Midtown to get the word out to the masses, she also practices what she preaches, producing nearly every single garment she sells right in New York.

“The Garment Center is a hub for research and development,” she told me yesterday as we walked through Regal Originals, a 50-plus-year-old firm that does trimmings and pleating for big name designers. Teng compares the Center to a delicate ecosystem–it produces beautiful, rare things and needs to be nurtured.

The designer began working with Regal about a year ago. Rodger Cohen, the owner of the firm, is also heavily involved in efforts to preserve the area. They were introduced through acquaintances, and came up with some cool pleating ideas. Teng is always looking to innovate, so they did some work with cross pleats, which kind of looks like a fancy waffle pattern. (You can check it out in our tour of the factory.) Cohen even initially sent Teng vignettes of different styles to show her what they might look like. Because of proximity–they’re only two blocks away from each other–the project was able to go from project to reality in less than a year.

Like the other companies we’ve profiled for this series, Regal understands that in this age, mass production happens overseas. And that’s that. But Cohen and his family (the company was established by his father-in-law) also believe that there’s a space for special clothes. He wants young designers to know that they can produce high-quality garments just blocks away from their studios, and at a price comparable with high-end pieces made abroad.

Click through to take a tour of Regal Originals, courtesy of Rodger Cohen, Yeohlee Teng, and the rest of Cohen’s fantastic staff.

Fashion Gone Rogue Sued For Copyright Infringement; Goes On Hiatus

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 11:18 AM PDT

Freja Beha Erichsen by Terry Richardson for Vogue Nippon August 2010

Fashion Gone Rogue, our go-to site for fashion editorials from high fashion mags we can’t afford to buy, went on hiatus today after image licensing agency Trunk Archive threatened to sue for copyright infringement.

Trunk Archive took issue with an image of Lily Donaldson being used for the header of the site, and fired off this email to Joanna Gillespie, the site’s curator:

I was very disheartened to see the Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin photograph of Lily Donaldson incorporated into the design of your website. Clearly you never asked for permission nor received permission to use this image from either the artists, their agent or their licensing agency…It surprises me that a site that purports to support and admire fashion photography would engage in such blatant copyright infringement. How do you expect this industry to survive if sites such as yours do not respect the basic premise of artist copyright?

We ask that you remove this image from your website immediately. In addition, we require payment of a $2,000 copyright infringement fee. Please remit payment today to Trunk Archive, at the address below. If the image remains as part of your logo by this time tomorrow, and if we have not received a check from you by July 6th, 2010, our lawyers will be in immediate contact.

Gillespie subsequently shut the site down with the message, “NOTE – The site is currently on hiatus. This is just too much.”

Too much meaning the request for $2K – she was happy to pull the image after receiving notice.

It’s tricky to navigate around image rights in the online fashion world. Trunk Archive is a licensing agency–they own the rights to the image in question and they have the right to sue when it is used without permission. But many sites, like Style.com, seem to not care when other sites use their images as long as they’re credited and there is a link back to their site (or they just don’t know about it). And FGR takes pains to credit the photographer and magazine for every spread they post. While Gillespie admitted that she did take the image in question from Trunk Archive (which she believes was originally a Vogue Nippon Cover), many photographers, including ones repped by Trunk, send her their work to publish on FGR. For good reason, too. The site receives 3 million hits a month.

“Photography should be seen and shared, and my site promotes this,” says Gillespie. “I don’t understand why I am getting punished for that.”

Fortunately, the kerfuffle has since been resolved. Turns out one of the photogs was peeved and contacted Trunk. Trunk has since smoothed things over with the photographer and FGR is in the clear as long as the image in question is taken down. PHEW.

Pretty in Pink: Eight Blushing Items We Want Now

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 10:25 AM PDT

I was cringing a little bit when Lauren's rant last week about girly design. I love anything pink.

Right now I'm typing on a Macbook covered in a hot pink shell, have a Blackberry with a fuchsia skin, and am reading from notes in my watermelon hued journal. Mind you, I don't dress in pink from head to toe, but I have quite a bit of pink in my closet. Not sweet pink. Loud pink. Is it only for tweens?

Well, I'm the most, um, mature writer at Fashionista. I mean age, not experience and wisdom. So I'm either regressing or empowered. I'm not really sure. Just in time for the height of summer, here are my favorite pink things. Please, use them sparingly.

Fashion News Roundup: Hollister Gets Grosser, More LiLo News We’re Not Surprised By, and Tanning Gets Taxed

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 09:50 AM PDT

Bedbugs take over Hollister: SoHo’s biggest annoyance has become a breeding ground for one of NYC’s biggest annoyances: bedbugs. The infestation has shut down the store indefinitely and will likely cause even bigger problems for the company, from returns to lawsuits to no one wanting to go within 1,000 feet of that store because bedbugs are so gross. Although the store is closed, they’ve apparently stationed three shirtless models as a sign of tenacity or something. {Racked}

Happy Coco Rocha Month!: Each month at Vogue UK, a fashionista is invited to give readers a daily peek inside her wardrobe. Past months have included Alexa Chung and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld. Today is Coco’s first day. Check out her Topshop shorts and Aldo shoes. {Vogue UK}

Lohan’s Latest Law Battle: Lindsay Lohan apparently picked up $17,060.83 worth of clothing from L.A. boutique Church and didn’t pay for them, claiming her “business manager” would foot the bill. Lindsay is definitely at fault here, but we think Church should take a little responsibility for, i don’t know, letting a crazy celebrity walk out of their store without paying for 17 grand worth of merchandise. {TMZ}

Tanning is the New Smoking:
Snooki’s worst nightmare has come to fruition. Starting today, there will be a 10% tax on tanning in tanning salons nation-wide. However, there are a lot of weird exceptions and gray areas. For example, health clubs that offer tanning services are exempt from the tax, as are spray tans. We’re betting die-hard tanners (read: the cast of Jersey Shore) won’t have any trouble finding loopholes. {Gawker}

Stylists Battle it Out: Theory is hosting a style-off between Annabel Tollman, J. Errico and Dani Stahl to benefit the charity of their choice. Head over to the brand’s Facebook page today to vote for your favorite, and you’ll be entered to win a $750 gift card! {Facebook}

Cynthia Rowley Designs For Pampers

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 08:24 AM PDT

Cynthia Rowley is really getting her name out there. Hot on the heels of her collection for Roxy and her line of bridesmaid dresses, Rowley is launching yet another collaboration. For Pampers. Really.

The mother of two has designed a line of printed diapers to be sold at Target starting mid July. Rowley believes parents want more choice when it comes to wrapping up their babies’ bums, and given Huggies recent launch of the “Jeans Diaper,” she might be onto something.

“It’s the first piece of clothing your baby will ever wear, and it should be special,” Rowley told Luxist.

The collection includes 11 pastel styles for boys and girls in madras, stripes, and ruffles. Would you put your baby in designer diapers?

Kristin Prim and Sky Ferreira to Star in Diesel’s Spring 2011 Campaign?

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 07:00 AM PDT

Let the Spring 2011 rumors begin swirling…

An educated tipster informs us that teen fashion editor Kristin Prim and up-and-coming pop star Sky Ferreira have been tapped to star in Diesel’s Spring 2011 ad campaign.

We’ve checked into it, and our sources have corroborated the claim. (We’re still waiting to hear back from Diesel.)

Prim and Ferreira, virtual unknowns beyond a certain set, are interesting choices to lead a campaign. However, we’re betting Ferreira will be much bigger by spring than she is now. And Prim’s appointment proves that the ingenue blogger/editor isn’t going away anytime soon.

Whether or not Diesel is sticking with the “Be Stupid” slogan remains unclear.
