Most Influential Street Style Bloggers Posted: 30 Jul 2010 07:00 AM PDT When I started writing about fashion in 2004, street style photographers were not yet a breed. Well, at least not in the Western world. But with advent of The Sartorialist in 2005, that all changed. Today, just about every fashion related website, blog, what-have-you boasts some form of street style photography. And while Scott Schuman, founder of The Sartorialist, may be the pioneer, he is no longer alone in his work. The streets surrounding fashion week runways have become flooded with a special type of paparazzi–the kind who you want to be bothered by. Other than a good blog post, and some great inspiration, what do street style photographers get out of this work? Well, if they’re smart, they’ll leverage it to score other projects. Think about it: Garance Dore’s collaboration with Gap, her work for British Elle and Club Monaco, Schuman’s Burberry campaign, Tommy Ton’s Style.com retainer–none of these would have happened without those trusty blogs. So that’s how we determined 2010’s Most Influential Street Style Bloggers. Much like our personal style bloggers’ list, this isn’t wholly scientific. However, we did consider a number of factors, including: blog traffic, overall appeal, notoriety, and maybe most important–big deals, placements, or campaigns that can be credited to the blog’s influence. We’ve narrowed the field down to the 10 best. Are your favorites well-represented? |

Friendship Bracelets Go From Camp To Cool Posted: 29 Jul 2010 04:20 PM PDT Friendship bracelets are having an extended moment. They’ve come a long way from my camp cabin, where my friends and I would knot bracelets using our big toes as hooks (I promise it seemed normal). Vena Cava’s SS 2010 invites were friendship bracelets. Lucky editor Jenny Kang’s line Bracelets by Dad, has graced the wrists of Alexa Chung and Leighton Meester. Lauren is mad for Parisian designer Aurelie Bidermann’s ‘Do Brasil‘ bracelet which knots gold links right in with the colorful embroidery thread. Now J.Crew has partnered with Frieda & Nellie to produce a line of one-of-a-kind friendship bracelets that have rhinestones and metal woven into the embroidery thread. We wouldn’t mind if our besties gave us any of these. |
We Heart Urban Outfitters’ Designer Collaborations Posted: 29 Jul 2010 02:00 PM PDT New designer collaborations keep popping up at Urban Outfitters and we kind of love it. Urban is always full of on-trend, reasonably priced clothing and it’s hard, at least for us, to walk out of that store without impulsively buying something. However, a lot of the clothes are not the most well-made or original, and there’s nothing worse than seeing everyone in town wearing the same dress you just bought, or just knowing instantly where you bought it, even if it was only $50. This is why we tend to stick to their designer lines. They always end up partnering with cool, independent brands that we already like, so we see more value in being able to purchase their designs at Urban Outfitters prices and get really cute pieces that actually seem pretty well-made. Some of our personal faves are Fletcher by Lyell, Rapscallion by Samantha Pleet, Lark & Wolff by Steven Alan and David Page by Timo Weiland. We’re also fans of Geren Ford’s Hawks collection, whose latest delivery is available online today (and in stores sometime in the next week) and is full full of black, draping, and little rivets–all things we like. Coincidentally, we just snapped up a dress from the last delivery, all of which is now on sale. We also just found out about Le Bij, a line of eco-friendly bar rings in a ton of colors made out of recycled plastic. The line is designed by Jules Kim of Bijules, whose rings are frequently spotted on the fingers of people like Katy Perry and Rihanna. Bar rings–those rings that are vaguely similar to brass knuckles–have only increased in mainstream popularity since around 2007, when everyone in New York started wearing the Surface to Air ones. (Le Bij is not the first instance of Urban copying a jewelry design concept.) The jewelry trend, which is still hard to find for much less than $200, can now be yours, in plastic, for a mere $18. |
Helluuur thurrrr, We Dissect Lola’s Lexicon Posted: 29 Jul 2010 01:08 PM PDT If you, like us, are entranced by Lourdes Leon’s Material Girl blog, you’ve surely noticed that Madonna’s daughter has her own language, replete with neologisms and wacky phraseology. Now Lola’s got three posts up, the latest of which includes the word “FABNOSITY.” It’s like her own hipster tween spin on Kimora Lee Simmons’ “fabulosity.” So I culled through her musings to put together this handy Lola Lexicon, and tried my best to interpret and define each new word and phrase (Brits please clue me in if some of these are British-isms I don’t understand). This girl deserves her own urban dictionary. Here it is in alphabetical order. Enjoy. Waris Ahluwalia, Arden Wohl and More Threw a Party for Pelicans Posted: 29 Jul 2010 12:12 PM PDT Last night, we stopped by Party for the Pelicans, a charity event held at The Wooly to benefit the oil disaster, specifically the Endangered Species Coalition’s efforts to protect the more than 40 endangered species being negatively impacted. The party was full of cool people like Arden Wohl, Tom Sachs, Leelee Sobieski and Waris Ahluwalia, who lent a beautiful piece from House of Waris to the event’s silent auction. If the piece weren’t so far out of our price range, we would have bid our little hearts out. We’re super jealous of whoever got it, but if it wasn’t you, head to Barneys this week, as all proceeds from House of Waris will go to the Endangered Species Coalition. Sculptor Tom Sachs is also helping out–he made this amazing necklace made out of little polar bear sculptures and about $40 worth of quarters, all the proceeds of which will also go to the ESC. While the event was really about the animals, we are Fashionista, so we had to ask Waris about the CFDA Fashion Incubator, about which he had little to say: “Yeah, I mean, it’s an office space.” We also got some scoop on Waris’ collaboration with Tilda Swinton and Pringle of Scotland for their 195 Collaborations collection. Waris is creating a special brooch for a limited edition twin set for Fall. It will be sold at Barneys and might have something to do with their Fashion’s Night Out event, which just keeps sounding more and more amazing. About midway through the event, the entire party gathered around a macbook to watch this hilarious, cute and heartwarming video that the Neistat brothers made for the Endangered Species Coalition. So, we will leave you with that and a link to the ESC’s special Oil Spill: Wildlife Crisis website, where you can learn more about the oil spill’s impact on endangered species and what you can do to help. |
Lauren Santo Domingo Just Styled Coco Rocha and Her Hubby for Vogue Posted: 29 Jul 2010 10:58 AM PDT See, some socialites do more than attend parties! It seems that Vogue contributor Lauren Santo Domingo just finished up a shoot for the pub with Coco Rocha and her new husband James Conran. We’re guessing it’ll be some sort of entertaining story about newlyweds at home, but who knows? And for those still unconvinced of LSD’s work ethic, we hear that the charity event favorite is also about to launch an e-commerce site. It’s supposedly some sort of web trunk show…we’ll tell you more as well learn more. |

Posted: 29 Jul 2010 09:22 AM PDT The Naked Truth: Apparently, French Playboy published some pictures, many of them nude, of Lara Stone without her consent. She issued a statement saying “It’s not the kind of publication I would ever choose to appear in.” While French Playboy is probably more similar to French Vogue than American Playboy (Lou Doillon has appeared nude on the cover, willingly), there is something wrong with the magazine publishing the photos without Stone’s knowledge or permission. Her lawyers have begun proceedings against the magazine and photographer Greg Lotus. {The Cut} Can’t Hardly Wait: Another online magazine goes live this Friday. It’s called Hardly and is openly aiming to fill the void that Sassy left behind, something no other magazine has successfully been able to achieve. Only a few shots have been released from the Canada-based mag, but it looks good to us and we hope it brings today’s teens the kind of happiness the Sassy brought people back in the day. {Refinery29} J. Crew friendship bracelets: J. Crew’s latest accessories collab is with Frieda & Nellie and includes super cute one-of-a-kind friendship bracelets! The collection debuts tomorrow in the SoHo and East Hampton boutiques and if you’re wondering why we’re just hearing about it now, it’s because J. Crew only met with the designers last week – impulse buying we can all benefit from. However, they are a bit pricey – $130 to $250 per bracelet. {Stylelist} Critical Shopper vs. Forever 21: An anonymous squad of 3 brave women to took on the enormous Times Square Forever 21 on a weekday afternoon. They spend hours in the store, dodging such obstacles as rambunctious teenagers and crying children on a quest for the ultimate designer-inspired deal. {NY Times} |
Iggy Pop Only Wears His New Tees For Barneys When It’s Too Cold in His Ferrari Posted: 29 Jul 2010 08:23 AM PDT The one and only Iggy Pop was on hand at Barneys Co-Op last night to sign t-shirts at the launch of his collection for the store’s Archive 1887 line. Of course, Iggy Pop doesn’t really wear t-shirts. At last night’s launch celebration, he was wearing a vest with no shirt underneath. If you Google image the punk rock legend, it’s hard to find an image of him with a shirt on. So I asked him, “You don’t really wear t-shirts–are you going to wear your Barneys’ Archive 1887 line?” But would he ever wear them on stage? Yes, please. You just stay like you are. Iggy was a good sport about signing tees and posing for photogs, and made an interesting analogy about his Barney’s appearance. “It’s a new relationship and I owed them one,” Iggy said. “Kind of like if you go with a chick you eventually get married and you have to have a ceremony. I owed them an appearance of some sort. And also, Barneys is a nice store to crash.” Indeed it is. So nice that Trash and Vaudeville’s Jimmy Webb stopped by to say hi to his friend and stripped down in the middle of the store to try on the line. The tees, priced at $58, are classic super-soft rock tees plastered with iconic images of Iggy Pop contorting on stage. Of course it’s not the first time Iggy Pop has made a foray into fashion. He was the poster boy for John Varvatos’ campaign back in 2007. |
Posted: 29 Jul 2010 07:00 AM PDT Do you own a pair of William Rast jeans? Neither do we. But the brand does put on a pretty awesome show each season, which means we wouldn’t be opposed to investing. That is, if we ever actually saw the product in stores. Now’s our chance; and at a much saner price. The Justin Timberlake-lead label is teaming up with Target on a collection that will hit stores December 19, according to WWD. Prices aren’t out yet, but considering what Target has charged in the past for the Go International line–as well as the the fact that this will certainly be sold to the masses as “Justin’s work,”–the pieces will probably range from $15 to $80. The William Rast collection is primarily denim, so expect to see plenty of that, as well as a pleather jacket or two. We’re also betting on the presence of a military-style, faux fur-lined anorak. |
