Our red carpet favorites pulled out the big guns this week…Rachel Zoe did Louis Vuitton, Jen Brill tried turquoise Chanel, Jessica Alba opted for Balmain, and who cares who Drew Barrymore was wearing? She looked great. Oh, and Rachel Bilson went on a Barneys shopping spree.

Who Goes To Istanbul Fashion Week?

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 03:30 PM PDT

ISTANBUL–Istanbul Fashion Week may be new, but it’s not lacking for bold faced names in the front row.

Pat Field is a fixture, which makes sense, since Istanbul Fashion Week’s press kit says she “aims to introduce the Turkish brands and designers to the world and to turn Istanbul into an effective fashion center.” It’s a tall order, but if anyone can make Istanbul happen, it’s Pat Field. The vibrant colors and energy of Istanbul are right up her alley.

In addition to Field, fashion stars abound. Anna Piaggi is here, and she gets a deserved applause when she enters the venue. So is ELLE’s Kate Lanphear, Lynn Yaeger, Alexandra Richards and Olivier Zahm (with daughter in tow). Alek Wek has also been spotted. And according to twitter, LOVE covergirl Alessandra Ambrosio just touched down at Ataturk Airport hours ago, where she was surprised to find paps waiting for her at immigration. We’re looking forward to seeing her walk tomorrow.

As for the celebrity presence? Understandably, it’s a bit more limited. Anna Kournikova, described in the aforementioned release as “newly transferred to the fashion world,” is here. We also noticed on the Twitters that Khloe Kardashian is in Turkey, so we thought she might make an appearance at the shows as well, but it’s more likely she’s here to support hubby Lamar Odom at the World Basketball Championship which is apparently happening here too. Who knew?

Florence Welch Hearts Willow: Is She the Aussie Brand’s Chance at American Success?

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 01:30 PM PDT

Willow, an Australian women’s clothing label, has remained pretty much under the radar since its beginning, at least in the U.S. Kit Willow’s designs are sharp and feminine. We feel like the clothes are more than appealing enough to be successful in the U.S., and the brand’s relative obscurity here is a bit puzzling to us.

It does seem that difficulty breaking into the American market plagues a lot of Australia and New Zealand-based brands, which may be partly due to distance and difference in seasons. Karen Walker, for example, makes amazing clothes and even shows at New York Fashion Week–as does Willow–but is nearly impossible to find in the U.S., despite having multiple boutiques and a line for Topshop in New Zealand. Willow has three boutiques in Australia–one of her dresses even covered Australian Vogue in March.

However, if Willow is looking to break out on this side of the equator, she now has a decent chance. That’s partially in thanks to a British indie band which skyrocketed to success this year. Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine has been wearing Willow to death at concerts, talk shows, press appearance, and magazine shoots. The band is performing at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, where it’s nominated in four categories. Florence may not yet have the influence of someone like Lady Gaga or Rihanna, but the night could be pretty major for both Florence and Willow, if she does decide to wear the brand.

We think this will undoubtedly bring a lot more awareness to the brand, but Willow will probably need to do more, like increase American retail availability, in order to achieve longstanding success. What do you think? Does Willow have western hemisphere appeal, and can a band of the moment help bring the brand out of obscurity?

Gap Goes Australian: A Report from the Front (of the) Line

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 12:30 PM PDT

MELBOURNE–With the opening of a gigantic two-storey tall denim fly at Melbourne's Chadstone shopping center on Thursday night, Gap officially ticked Australia off its to-do list. Total world domination? Done.

Or is it? While the Aussie fashion pack oohed and aahed over the teensy Gap kids line (anything small is always cuter), and stocked-up on undies for their boyfriends and brothers, chatter amongst the racks quickly turned to just how the very buttoned-up all-America GAP aesthetic is going to work into an Aussie wardrobe.

"Do you think I can Ksubi this up?" one blogger squeaked. "Does anyone really wear double denim?" asked another.

At first glance, the Gap 2010 spring range instantly conjures up images of vacations in the Hamptons, complete with tennis lessons, apple pie, and lobster sandwiches. Admittedly I've never actually been there (so please excuse the clichés). In contrast, the stereotypical Aussie summer style has more of a “drinking warm beer at a summer music festival” vibe.

So how does Gap fit in on Australia’s high street? To be honest, I don't think it matters.

Why? Because it's Gap! And the same goes for Zara and Uniqlo when open they open their doors here later on in the year. Yes, we have similar stores that sell the same things for very similar prices. But they are same old, same old. And Gap is big, shiny, and new. And not just that, these big international brands have been snubbing us for so long, it's like they were playing hard to get, and Aussie shoppers have fallen hook, line, and sinker for their playboy ways.

So will I be adding a bit of Gap to my wardrobe this summer? Definitely–but I’ll style it with a Sass & Bide tee. My main concern is…what am I going to do on my overseas holidays now?

Vivienne Westwood’s Shoe Retrospective at Selfridges is Pretty Fantastic

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 11:30 AM PDT

LONDON–It was 1955 and Dior had just brought us the stiletto. A 14 year old Vivienne Westwood, who had already been wearing high heels for a year, bought her first pair and brought them to school, sitting them on her wooden desk for all to admire when her history teacher came in and said, “Vivienne Swire if God wanted you to walk on pins he would have supplied them.”

Vivienne Westwood Shoes: An Exhibtion 1973-2010 opened yesterday at The Ultralounge, a permanent exhibition space in the vast belly of Selfridges. Voted “Best Department Store in the World,” the class favorite figured that wasn’t a big enough feather in their hat, so the people at Selfridges will be launching “The Biggest Shoe Department in the World” next month and have chosen Dame Westwood’s fetish for shoes to whet our appetites. Supported by rubber shoe designers Melissa, some 200 of the designer’s shoes dating from 1973-2010 are displayed like fine jewelry in a chronology of footwear.

Britain’s Queen Mother of Punk has found inspiration in everything from British colonialism to the Victorian dandy to down-and-dirty S&M. The show is a knuckle-rapping reminder of the true origins of the oft-repeated pirate boot, court shoe, ‘rocking horse’ ballerina, three tongued trainer and the mighty Naomi-Campbell-tumbling-platform of ‘93. “She looked like a gazelle in slow motion,” Westwood later remarked of the infamous fall. “She’s a very proud woman of course, and so when she got back stage she was so angry with me.”

Westwood brought us the first corset intended for outwear in ‘87 entitled “Stature of Liberty” and named the shop she opened with hubby Malcolm McLaren “Too Fast To Live, Too Young To Die” before renaming it an umincing “Sex.” The designer has been thumbing her nose at society’s rules or conventions since day one.

“I’m not one of those people who likes the ‘no make-up’ make-up look and things like that. I like artificial things and I think that’s what we are,” Westwood said once. “I think civilization is artificial you know, otherwise we would just be still living in trees.” Perhaps her partnering with a plastic shoe maker shouldn’t be such a surprise.

The Low Down on Fashion’s Night Out Los Angeles

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 10:30 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES–Last year, the city of Los Angeles was relatively quiet on Fashion's Night Out. That won’t be the case on September 10. With the Beverly Center serving as the central hub of activities, the 5pm opening ceremony will be hosted by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Vogue's Lisa Love, and Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas. Throughout the evening, two fashion shows will be held in the center of the mall and one at Macy's, with 100% of the stores (everyone from Bloomingdale’s to Forever 21) participating until 10pm.

But if you prefer boutiques over billboards, the Beverly Center is kindly offering free parking from 4pm to 10pm so you can hop on one of many LADOT DASH buses. [Ed. note: I've been on a bus in LA and I promise it's not that scary, people.] They're providing complimentary transportation to the city's most fashionable neighborhoods. Over 300 retailers are registered to throw parties, offer special sales and giveaways, and host a celebrity or designer appearance or two. Here's a quick rundown of what's on:

* Melrose Ave: Alexander McQueen is featuring special FNO bracelets, there will be a "wild photo booth" complete with props at Betsey Johnson, and a chess competition (?!) at G-Star Raw. Oh, and champagne at Marc Jacobs!
* Robertson Blvd: Stop by Gap’s 1969 jeans shop to do a fit session with creative director Rosella Giuliani and her design team. Supposedly there is also a scavenger hunt along the whole street, with winners receiving a gift bag with goodies from each store.
* West Third Street (not to be confused with 3rd St. Promenade): Newly opened Magnolia Bakery will be offering FNO themed cupcakes to satisfy your sweet tooth before you head over to Hillary Rush to preview a new handbag line and snag some "stellar" gifts with purchase. Also, Milk is generously giving away a $250 gift certificate to the most fashionably dressed person in attendance.
* Venice's Abbot Kinney: Guests can meet Oliver Peoples’ designer Larry Leight in Abbot Kinney Court with complimentary drinks being poured all night.
* Los Feliz: Confederacy is where all the fun is at in this part of town with a rumored celebrity appearance, DJ, and cocktails.
* Downtown LA is getting in on the action, hosting a vintage fashion show at the Cooper Design Space and the Cynthia Rowley mobile fashion truck in the heart of the fashion district.

If that isn't enough for you, the city is hosting a "post retail fashion celebration"–a.k.a. after party–when the stores close up at 10pm. Simply bring a receipt showing that you spent a minimum of $25 at one of the FNO retailers and you can join the parties being held at Industry or XIV. Who says you have to be on "the list"?

For all the FNO Los Angeles details, be sure to visit FNO.lacity.org or follow them on Twitter (@FNOlosangeles) for the latest updates.

LA's official Fashion's Night Out t-shirt will also be available at participating retailers and the FIDM Book Store. All proceeds go to the California Fashion Foundation which provides scholarships to fashion students.

Fashion News Roundup: Miniature Anna and Grace, Stam’s Designs for Macy’s and J. Crew’s Outlet Plans

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 09:35 AM PDT

Vogue Dolls: Andrew Yang, maker of fashion-inspired rag dolls and part of Barneys’ very long Fashion’s Night Out line up has been commissioned by the retailer to create one of a kind replicas of Vogue editors Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington. The dolls took two weeks to make. "I had to special-order Anna's wig and cut it myself to get the bob right," Mr. Yang says. "And Grace's hair was the right color, but it needed a perm." Want one? Go to charitybuzz.com on August 31 to bid. All proceeds will go towards the New York AIDS fund. {The Moment}

From Muse to Designer: Images from Jessica Stam’s latest design gig are out. She designed four pieces for Rachel Roy’s diffusion line for Macy’s, Rachel by Rachel Roy. There’s a cute gingham cardigan but the other three pieces are a belt, a basic pair of black skinnies and a basic black purse. There’s nothing bad about them, but we’re not quite blown away. {Fashionologie}

Wintour vs. Federer:
Even those far outside the fashion industry are subjected to Anna Wintour’s sartorial influence. An avid tennis fan, Anna has apparently been giving Roger Federer fashion advice. "I kind of ask her sometimes what she thinks," he said. "I get a very strong second opinion." {NY Mag}

Online Outlet: Instead of putting up another brick and mortar out in the middle of nowhere, J. Crew has decided to make outlet shopping convenient by bringing it online. In the age of online discounters like Gilt and Ideeli, this sounds like a smart move. {WSJ}

Ten Questions For Project Runway

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 09:00 AM PDT

1) Oh, Project Runway, why? Georgina Chapman AGAIN? Harvey, why don't you just put yourself up there as a judge and be done with it? (Oh, and congratulations on the impending bundle of joy.)

2) Did Team Luxe really think they could sneak that neutral nightmare past Michael Kors, the king of camel sportswear?

3) Should we really trust Michael C a designer who wears Ed Hardy shirts everyday? I'm not sure they're even genuine Ed Hardy.

4) We can forgive Tim for making up the phrase "youthened up," right?

5) Well, this was really Casanova's night, wasn't it? The breakdown, the tight lime green deep V sweater, the tears, the swearing, "I should just design for old lady slut flamenco dancers," and that divine and dainty lace blouse. Sometimes you just need to hit rock bottom first. I apologize for my comment about him last week.

6) Did anyone say the word "bitch" at least nine times while listening to Gretchen spew her BS, and then scream at the judges when they let her stay? People in the industry are going to be dying to work with her, right?

7) Why was the (I refuse to name the brand) hairstylist there with Tim at the beginning? Oh, right. To plug a product ON THE SHOW.

8) Victoria's Secret apparently has the right idea, don't they? Casanova's model "angel" saved his PR career. And wasn't it unfair that no one thanked the models on the runway for all the sewing they did?

9) Was the winning collection good? I mean, really? Epaulets and gold buttons? No. Balmain is the only one who can get away with it. And possibly The Blonds.

10) Is this season better than last season? I'm giving it a preliminary "yes" for entertainment and "no" for fashion quality.

Love Is Blind. We Are Not. Front Row Fuss in Istanbul.

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 08:00 AM PDT

This week hundreds of international press descended upon Istanbul to cover Istanbul Fashion Week. IFW is not New York or Paris or Milan or London, and the shows are a bit disorganized (to say the least). Many fashion-y feathers have been ruffled. Who was so peeved by his/her lack of a front row seat he/she scoffed at an organizer, “If this is the way you treat international press, you’ll get nowhere”?
