10 Questions for the Rachel Zoe Project Posted: 25 Aug 2010 01:32 PM PDT 1. Was Rachel's conversation with Oscar backstage a conversation or a press interview? The vibe was very there-are-a-lot-of-cameras-pointed-towards-us-so-we-need-to-say-things-to-each-other. 2. This is just a suggestion, but why couldn’t Rachel and Roger just pretend their anniversary isn't during fashion week and celebrate it before or after instead of complaining so much about how they can't spend time together? Don’t people do that? 3. Why is everything a "moment?" Seriously, Rachel and Brad said the word "moment" at least 7 times during the episode, including: "White Moment" – something Rachel dies for, natch, and that Cameron is also known to love. "Princess Moment" – Rachel referring to ODR's collection and something Cameron hasn't had in a while "Anti-black Moment" – Rachel referring to what Demi apparently needs to have (which may have worked, as Demi rocked a purple printed mini dress on Regis & Kelly this morning). "Whoever decided the stages should be white just fucked up my whole moment!" – Brad, um, having a moment. 4. Did hairdresser Joey just refer to Taylor as a tumor, as in "I feel like a humongous tumor has been taken out of Rachel Zoe?" Roger definitely compared dealing with her to negotiating with terrorists a few episodes back. So now she's more like a humongous tumor. Alright. 5. I kind of want Rach and Rodge to have kids but can you really picture Rachel as a mom? I mean, picturing her pregnant is one thing but she literally rolled her eyes when her sister mentioned play dates. But, then she said, "I die for kids." We're assuming this means she likes them? 6. Couldn't they have filmed Roger having that Rachel Zoe Barbie being made instead of this awkward scene at Kiki de Montparnasse with Rachel's sister? With the sister's incessant nervous laughter and Roger's constant expression of disgust at the site of everything in the store, I literally wanted to die. Also, was that sales girl deliberately trying to make both of them uncomfortable with that vibrator demonstration? 7. Can we please learn more about what Rachel was like in 1998 and what happened to her between then and now? Didn't she look adorable in that honeymoon video? The hair may not have been the best but she looked half her current age and had a total Jennifer Aniston meets Sarah Michelle Gellar thing going on. 8. What was with Roger saying he didn't think she was even going to have a career back then and that she had no idea what she was doing? Harsh, no? At least he's proud of her for being on QVC. 9. Is Brad slowly turning into Rachel? For one, he sported Rachel's signature robe look more than once during the episode. Second, he admitted to packing something like three suitcases of clothing for fashion week (Rachel, too, has a penchant for overpacking). Third, he seems to have gotten a tad more melodramatic. Not in the omg Taylor yelled at me and I can't take it anymore way of last season but in the new, sassy, I'm so pissed at the Oscars set designers for standing in the way of Cameron's white moment way. 10. How gorgeous was that Marchesa dress that needs to be on one of Rachel's clients? So. Gorgeous. |

Fashion News Roundup: Crystal Renn’s Dance Moves, Underwater Fashion Show, and the New J. Crew Posted: 25 Aug 2010 12:30 PM PDT Renn Again: Model of the moment Crystal Renn continues to buzz about the internet. This time, she is looking light as a feather dancing around in nothing but a VPL bodysuit. The dance routine was for a photo shoot by Skye Parrott for The Block, a new Canadian fashion magazine. Crystal actually has some pretty impressive moves. Perhaps dancing is part of her new exercise routine? {Ford Models Blog} Unlikely Pair: Jake Davis of Jake Davis Test Shots recently designed two pairs of men's shoes for Sebago's Nexus Project. While there is nothing particularly feminine about the footwear, Jake chose a female subject to advertise them. Gorgeous model Rachel Ballinger (who you might recognize from, um, the Urban Outfitters website) moves gracefully atop a New York City rooftop in Jake's designs. We've never seen someone pull off an American flag and boat shoes so well. {Jake Davis Screen Tests} The Hair Situation: You might remember that on a recent episode of Jersey Shore, Vinny finally found someone who could cut (or tape-up, whatever that means) his thick, Italian hair. It turns out Vinny, Pauly D, Ronnie and the Situation are not the only notables who've had the pleasure of visiting Miami's Platinum Boyz Barbers. {The Moment} New Crew: The new J. Crew Men's Shop on Madison Avenue just opened it it looks pretty impressive. The store is full of reclaimed materials and boasts, in addition to J. Crew menswear, extended suiting and special items by Benson and Clegg, Timex, Alden, Persol, Rogue's Gallery, Barbour and more. There's even a basement filled with vintage treasures. {Racked} |
Does My Hair Look Old? The Verdict on Anti-Aging Hair Products Posted: 25 Aug 2010 11:50 AM PDT As if it's not enough that I am constantly scanning my face for those little signs of wear and tear, now the beauty industry is telling me that my hair is making me look old. Anti-aging hair care products have flooded the market in the last few years. A few weeks ago WWD reported that Ken Paves (BFF of Jessica Simpson and QVC regular), Redken, and Zoto were all entering this market. Frederic Fekkai, L'Oreal, and Dove, already have products in this category. The prices range from $6 for drugstore options to $95 for fancier potions. Signs of aging hair include the obvious–graying–as well as dryness, thinning, and dullness. Graying can start in your 20s (!!) although with the recent trend of young ingenues going gray, perhaps this is no longer a stigma. The other symptoms can start anytime, depending on your diet, health, and how frequently you torture your locks with heat treatments. Every hair on your head is a strand of protein. Each strand falls out every four to five years and is replaced. These strands get smaller and more mousy looking the older you get. The basic premise for most anti-aging hair products is that they give your hair moisture without compromising volume. (Usually volumizing products can cause dryness and moisturizing products can be heavy and cause limpness.) After a quick scan of some of the anti-aging offerings, I've discovered that companies really like to use trademarked pseudo-scientific sounding ingredients like "Intra-Cylane" or very posh "natural" additives (caviar, truffle oil). I spoke to Misty Miller, a hairdresser with 20 years of experience in the industry, and NYC dermatologist Dr. Elizabeth Hale to get their take on these products. "Basically I think it's a marketing ploy," Misty said. "Dull, dry, lifeless hair is also common if one is on meds, vegetarian, or stressed. And hormones are a huge factor as well. Hair comes from the inside out…. so whatever is going on inside shows up in the hair." Her recommendation is to use a good moisturizing product and see a dermatologist if you have concerns about change in texture or hair quality. Dr. Hale sort of agreed: "I do think the most important things to do are keep your hair healthy with frequent trims to remove split ends, and eating a balanced diet, which should contain Biotin to strengthen hair." Biotin is found in nuts, as well as eggs, sweet potatoes, tuna, bananas, nonfat milk, and yogurt. Dr. Hale also recommended using SPF hair products or a hat if your hair is thinning. So hair can age just like your other body parts, but do you need specialized products? Probably not. After a summer of blonde highlights, sun, chlorine, and salt water I'm just looking for a good hair mask, never mind the equivalent of hair Botox. |
Nina Garcia: Full-Time Fashion Director, Part-Time Neurobiologist? Posted: 25 Aug 2010 10:49 AM PDT The September issue of Marie Claire features an excerpt from Nina Garcia's Look Book, the editor’s fourth installment of fashion non-fiction. The usual bank of style advice is present–always be prepared, try the unexpected for a refreshing look, etc.–but one thought in particular really stuck with me and, moreover, had me feeling surprisingly impressed by Ms. Garcia's knowledge on the science of the human brain. Welcome to neurobiology 101. Class, if you'll all take out your Marie Claire magazines and turn to page 92, we can begin. Here Nina says, "Style is like a muscle: you have to exercise it regularly or you'll lose it." Seems simple enough, right? It's the same old "practice makes perfect" idiom that most of us came to know about in early years of elementary school. And even though Garcia is using a cutesy comparison of 'style is like a muscle' to make her point here, her humble simile is backed by hard scientific data. Norman Doidge, psychoanalyst and author of the book The Brain That Changes Itself, has researched and published evidence regarding what his book title implies–that the human brain is constantly re-shaping itself and changing its circuitry based on our everyday experiences. In other words, repeating learned behaviors strengthens the brain circuits associated with them, transforming an activity into a habit. In effect, Doidge's findings applied to Garcia telling us that the more effort we put into pulling ourselves together every morning, the more this behavior is strengthened in our brain, eventually turning it into a habit and allowing stylish dressing to become quicker and easier over time. And as you may have guessed, the reverse is true as well. That is, when we stop exercising a behavior our brain map space for this skill is turned over to the activities we are practicing instead. Every time we choose sweatpants and running shoes over heels and a dress, our brain eliminates the circuit for the stylish look and strengthens our penchant for sweatpants instead. Ouch. So is Nina a full-time fashion director and part-time neurobiologist? Doubtful, but she is onto something here. Perhaps before her next book she should schedule a lunch with Dr. Doidge. |
J.Crew’s Frivolous Yet Practical Accessory: The Mongolian Lamb Stole Posted: 25 Aug 2010 10:07 AM PDT A nor'easter has been blowing through the East Coast, bringing with it the first hint of crisp fall air. This immediately made me want to run for my suede boots and something tweed. Instead, I put on my flip-flops and took a stroll through a few shops to see what has been trickling out for fall. I, like everyone else, am a big fan of all the fur vests and shearling pieces shown for AW 2010, and have been anxious to see how it looks on a real body. My first try was a big fail. The Barneys outlet in Riverhead, NY had a black faux fur vest (Barneys house brand) that tragically looked like a gorilla costume. I put it on and was certain that the minute I got near a candle I would burst into flames. It looked matted and awful, and the fluffy silhouette on a girl with hips was not so flattering. Moving on to–where else?–J.Crew, I spotted an absolutely luscious cream Mongolian curly lamb wool vest that I wish came in a blanket. I slipped it on and it was gorgeous, but I'm not used to so much volume. Plus, the shocking $800 price tag sealed the deal for me. It's sold out on J.Crew's site, though, so apparently it was a steal for a lot of people. After wandering through the store a bit more, I noticed a woman trying on a scarf/collar hybrid made of the same long-haired mongolian wool. I found one in a smoky charcoal that is going to look amazing around the collar of my new olive wool jacket. The best part? Only $98! It's cozy, versatile, and the curly wool looks a bit more blinged out than standard shearling. It's going to be my go-to for fall and winter I suspect: it's stylish AND warm. A woman ran up to me and asked where I had found it. I pointed her to what turned out to be the last one in the store. A small cat fight commenced between her and another shopper who claimed she came in just to find this item. I clutched mine protectively and ran up to the counter. So, while I'll gamely continue looking for a fur vest that fits (or give up if it just doesn't work on me), I'm pretty sure my fluffy quota for fall has been met. |
Behind-the-Scenes Images from Christina Hendricks’ London Fog Shoot Posted: 25 Aug 2010 09:28 AM PDT Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks is the star of London Fog’s fall ad campaign, and the brand has offered up some behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot. Truthfully, we like these better than the actually campaign. While we love Hendricks and we love her looks, it’s time to transform her from an early ’60s sexy secretary into a modern woman. It would’ve been great to see her hair down, at least. We can’t wait for an indie mag like LOVE to commission a shoot with Hendricks. That’s gonna be revolutionary. |
A Wacky Start to Istanbul Fashion Week Posted: 25 Aug 2010 08:55 AM PDT ISTANBUL–Really. I’m here in gorgeous Istanbul covering Istanbul Fashion Week, which kicked off last night. Hard as it was to stay awake for the first show after a ten hour flight and no sleep, the designs at the KOZA student show held my attention rapt. More on that in a second. First, a bit about the venue. Istanbul Fashion Week is housed in the Taskisla Technical University, a gorgeous old stone building with a huge courtyard, which was all strung up with lights for last night’s event. To get to the show venue, however, is a bit of a maze. Attendees wind down stone stairs and through tunnels covered in red velvet, before arriving at the space which looks like, well, most any old runway venue, only shorter. Click through to see more from Day 1 of Istanbul Fashion Week. |
Exclusive: Garance Dore’s Behind-the-Scenes Footage of David Yurman’s Fall 2010 Campaign Posted: 25 Aug 2010 08:26 AM PDT We all know that industry legend Peter Lindbergh is the “official” David Yurman photog, but this season, the fine jewelry firm decided to take its campaign a step further. While Lindbergh was shooting Kate Moss in St. Barths, Garance Dore tagged along, creating a behind-the-scenes series of stills that will live on Yurman’s Facebook page. We got our hands on one of Garance’s images, where you can see Moss posing for Lindbergh. You can catch the rest of Garance’s behind-the-scenes photos of the Alex White-styled campaign on Facebook. |
