Inside the World of Off-Price Retail: We Go Behind the Scenes at Marshalls and T.J. Maxx HQ

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 01:00 PM PDT

Whether or not you consider yourself a “Maxxinista,” you’ve probably shopped at T.J. Maxx or Marshalls at least once in your life. And while you were shopping, you might have been surprised to find items from Marc Jacobs or YSL or Gucci or even just Vince and Theory basics discounted for more than half off the retail price.

Yesterday T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s hosted a group of fashion bloggers at their headquarters in Framingham, MA to learn more about how these stores buy and sell all that designer merch on the cheap. It’s quite an operation.

The big questions, answered:
- Is the merch in season? Spokespeople from T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s really beat us over the head with the message that they sell in season merchandise. Of course, some of the deeply discounted items are from past seasons, but over 85% of merchandise is current season. We were dubious, as we spotted some Coach wellies during a tour of their fall line up that we thought we’d seen before, but they set up a demonstration to put an end to our doubts. One of their buyers went out and purchased the exact same items at a T.J. Maxx and a major department store. A gold Michael Kors clutch at the department store? $198. At Marshalls? $79.99.
- Why are the prices so low? T.J. Maxx and Marshalls are constantly buying merchandise–not just per season like most department stores. And when we say constantly we mean over 40 weeks out of the year, buyers are on the road brokering last minute deals with over 12,000 vendors in more than 60 countries. They can buy surplus when a vendor has over-produced, or buy returns when a major department store has backed out of an order. And while department stores return merch to the vendors when they don’t sell it, T.J. Maxx and Marshalls buy their merchandise for keeps so they can get goods at a much better price. They also have the power to buy in varying quantities since they can place goods in all stores, or just select stores. This explains why you might find an awesome YSL bag at one store (we saw one trust us) and not at another store.
- What’s the difference between T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s? Turns out there isn’t much of a difference. Marshall’s has a bigger men’s and shoe selection. T.J.’s has “the runway” which has all the best designer duds. If you want to try to discern the difference, hold out until mid-Fall when Marshall’s sets up shop right on top of the T.J. Maxx on 18th St. and Sixth Ave.
- Is e-commerce in the works? Not in the immediate future, as T.J. Maxx and Marhsall’s merch turns over so quickly and is bought and distributed in different quantities at different stores. But T.J. Maxx’s marketing exec said that they are looking into it, and that they’re looking at flash sale sites like Gilt and Rue La La as models.

Questions we wish were answered:
- How does the buying work? We got a brief rundown of fall from a few buyers but we really want to know how they do their jobs. How do they get those last minute deals? Where do they travel? How do they decide what to purchase and when and for which stores? Tell us!

Adventures In Copyrights: Material Girl? More Like Stolen Material

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 12:00 PM PDT

This one is so close I had trouble telling which image was which for a good ten minutes. One clever tipster, upon seeing a piece from Madonna’s new line for Macy’s, pointed out that the “Material Girl” line blatantly rips off a design from Ronny Kobo’s work for Torn.

I mean, it’s identical–the pattern, the cut of the top, and even the arrangement of the embellishments. There’s nothing “Borderline” about it– Madonna’s been a “Bad Girl.” What’s your take?

It’s Dolce & Gabbana day here at Fashionista. We already gave you a sneak peak at Stefano and Domenico’s forthcoming film, Quando Quando Quando. Now we bring you a porked up Stefano Gabbana. Shipley & Halmos Fill in the Blank

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 10:00 AM PDT

We know them for their modern-meets-classic clothing, but we’re starting to reallize the Shipley & Halmos boys are into more than just designing our dream wardrobe. Soon, they will be book publishers. In lieu of showing this fashion week they’ve chosen take on a huge project.

Last night, we caught up with Jeff Halmos and Sam Shipley on the Women’s CO-OP floor of Barneys’ Madison Avenue store, the first stop on their “Fill In The Blank Photo Tour.” After almost four hours (two in men’s and two in women’s) of meeting with customers, the pair was exhausted. "Four hours is way too long," we heard one of them say, with 13 days and 12 cities left to go.

In each of the cities they visit, the designers set up a professional photo booth to take pictures of willing Barneys CO-OP customers, who will also fill out a mad libs-esque questionnaire followed by a release form because, come fall, select photos and questionnaires will be compiled into book intended to create an expansive portrait of the Shipley & Halmos customer. If last night's guests were any indication, that customer is cool and stylish and if anything the book will likely contain some great street style. We're also pretty curious about how all those mad libs will come together. The book will be called "We're An American ______" and will be sold at Barneys stores.

We love this idea and wanted to hear more about how it came about and what the future looks like for the young designers, so we talked to Jeff (Sam was busy playing photog).

Fashionista: Who came up with the idea?
Jeff Halmos: We were talking about finally taking the time to go out and visit customers in stores outside of New York. We didn't want to just go and stop in; we wanted to make it sort of a project to engage people that we meet and bring them into our creativity. Either we would introduce them to Shipley & Halmos if they've never heard of us before, or, if they're fans, we get to meet them and talk to them. So far, we've met a combination of the two.

What were your expectations?

Well, we were nervous that people would be shy but that was definitely not the case today. We thought people might be shopping and look over and ahhh there's photos, they're not quite sure if they wanna be a part of that, but that was definitely not the case because people were definitely very, very happy to get in there and go crazy. I think the mad libs helped to get them thinking in a more creative way. They're not just standing there posing; they're actually engaged.

Where are you most excited to stop?
I'm most excited about Seattle! I've never been there and Sam’s parents live there. I'm also excited about Austin–somehow Sam and I have never been there either.

Planning anything for Fashion Week?
No, we'll be doing market appointments, but this [whole project] is a lot and we're working on some other things following right up with this. It's a huge creative project. We have to come back and put together the book and art direct it so that's gonna take up a lot of our time.

Where do you see yourselves in five years?
We definitely hope by that time we have our own store, or stores. I hope we have more time to do projects like this where we can get out of the office and do things because we have so many ideas it's just a question of being able to find time. We have a really small office, it's just a few of us. Hopefully in 5 years, we'll have more people to take care of day-to-day.

See below for tour dates. If you happen to be in any of these cities, we definitely recommend going. In addition to getting to meet. (In our opinion) two of the cutest (and most talented) designers around, you’ll get a free limited edition tee and sharpie, and you might end up in a book!

Do I Really Want Chanel’s Paradoxal Nail Polish? Or Do I Just Think I Do?

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 09:00 AM PDT

I've been away on a little summer holiday, a huge part of which has been spent on a chair under an umbrella reading every single August and September fashion and beauty mag I can get my hands on. Therefore I've been unwittingly under the influence of fashion and beauty editors. So far they've told me that I will be wearing high waisted camel trousers, fur vests, and the fall version of clogs. In general, I will look very ladylike.

They've also told me that Chanel Paradoxal is the color to have on my fingertips. Chanel has been generally acknowledged as the lacquer leader ever since Vamp ruled the universe in 1994. Allure reported that a bottle of 2006's Black Satin went for $140 on eBay. This summer everyone's toes (including mine) were covered in Nouvelle Vague or some other brand's version of that summery turquoise.

But Paradoxal is purple. Sparkly purple. Not generally a favorite color of mine. Yet a little voice in my head keeps saying, "But you have to try it. It's the new Chanel!"

Much as we like to think we are individuals with our own sense of style, how much are we actually influenced by the fashion media or by preconceived notions of what the “best” brands are?

I'll let you know this fall when I'm sporting my new Paradoxal manicure because it looked so fantastic on everyone at Fashion Week.

Paradoxal is available at Bergdorf Goodman now. Maybe I'll get the Blue Satin instead.

Ten Questions for Project Runway

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 08:00 AM PDT

1) How fantastically snarky is the editing this season? The St. Gretchen montage at the beginning of the show was classic.

2) Should we continue the Tim Gunn word-of-the-week? This week you must use "Schiaparelli-like" in a sentence. Alternatively, I'll accept "woolly animal balls."

3) Why didn't Betsey Johnson do any cartwheels?

4) "Mustache or no mustache?"–Mondo (This is a question I ask myself everyday.)

5) Was Michael's comment: "Everyone knows you love a hot glue gun" to AJ a euphemism or not?

6) Was Tim drunk this week? True, I was watching an old TV, but his face was a bit too matchy-matchy with his pink shirt. And telling Peach she had coal up her butt?

7) Which one of Heidi's outfits was worse, the mauve and periwinkle camouflage sweater or the white dental hygienist jacket with diaper dhoti pants?

8) Is calling something too beautiful supposed to be a criticism, Betsey? Andy's dress was hot.

9) So based on his comments to AJ, I guess this means we won't be seeing much crotch fringe on Michael Kors' runway? (Note to AJ: if someone tells you your dress is a hot mess, you shouldn't say thank you.)

10) Ooh, Philip Treacy next week?? I hope Ivy is released from the hospital by then.
