Costello Tagliapietra x Uniqlo Exceeds Expectations Posted: 20 May 2010 04:01 PM PDT
That’s why I had no trouble waking up early this morning to visit design duo Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra at Uniqlo’s SoHo location. Not only did I get a sneak peek of the collection before shoppers got a hold of it at 10am–I also got to spend a bit of money! (And most importantly, chat with the designers.) And let me tell you–I was highly, highly impressed. Costello Tagliapietra is known for its expert draping, off-kilter color ways, and beautiful fabrics. And all of that is present in this collection. The difference? Dresses start at just $29.50. The guys explained to me that this line is the everyday complement to its grown-up, fancier ready-to-wear collection. You’ll be happy to know that the designers even created the patterns for the pieces, so the draping, bias cutting and wrapping you appreciate in a Costello Tagliapietra frock is all there. I picked up a chartreuse t-shirt dress and a woven collarless shirt dress in a gorgeous warm charcoal color. Peruse these look book images–you won’t be disappointed! |
Domenico Vacca Denim: Well-Made Jeans for Flashy Dudes Posted: 20 May 2010 03:30 PM PDT
Unfortunately, the photos unearthed made me a bit skeptical. The button flies, rips here and there, washed-out whiskers, gold 'DV' logo–which is suspiciously similar to the DvF logo–on every seam…seemed like, frankly, a bit too much. But Edmund Hon tried to change my mind. Hon, VP of marketing for the new denim line, guided me through the collection, explaining every detail on each of the ten men's styles (sorry ladies–women's won't debut until spring 2011). "The collection is really about translating Domenico's suits into denim," Hon told me. The sartorial stitching, the shirt fabric lining in the waists, and the "handmade with love" tag inside of the fly are all signatures of a Domenico Vacca suit. Which makes the collection feel really well-connected to the brand as a whole. As for the dreaded back pockets–where most flashy denim designers go awry–DV denim keeps it clean and simple with a pretty amazing folded pleat. With prices starting at $345, Vacca is positioning himself well above favored men’s blue jean brands like Rock & Republic, Diesel, and True Religion. Will denim fans bite? Maybe, especially if they’re suckers for celebrity tie-ins. Indeed, several styles are named after Vacca’s famous friends, including Jeremy Piven, Forest Whitaker, and Mickey Rourke. |
Breaking News: Devi Kroell is Out at Devi Kroell Posted: 20 May 2010 03:02 PM PDT
The news comes just a few months after the Bartel family–known for big investments in labels like Lanvin–bought a significant stake in Kroell’s company. Kroell will remain a shareholder and board member, but she’ll no longer be involved with the day-to-day business. While we don’t have insider information on this one, we tend to think that the Bartel investment and Kroell’s departure are connected. It’s too bad–not only is Kroell a talent, she’s also the face of the brand. |
Inside the CFDA Fashion Incubator Posted: 20 May 2010 02:35 PM PDT
While there are no baby chicks, the CFDA Fashion Incubator is a home to many young designers. The way it works is the CFDA is leasing out small studios to designers for two years at a discounted price. Desingners from Prabal Gurung to Waris Ahluwalia have spots inside the Incubator, and are using them for all different purposes. Some as a showroom, while others will manufacture their products on site. We visited yesterday and had the pleasure of meeting with the designers and getting the scoop on their plans for their spaces. Click through to see what we found! |
Quote of the Day: Bronzed Like Valentino Posted: 20 May 2010 02:05 PM PDT I bought a GRADUAL hydrating bronzing milk. A little tanner every day, and no risk to end up like Valentino this time. And no streaks! So there! – Garance Doré on self tanners. |
Berlin Boutique Nico & Sasha’s First Foray Into Art Posted: 20 May 2010 01:31 PM PDT
The best example? Nico & Sasha. The boutique opened its doors in Berlin's Charlottenburg neighborhood at the end of October 2009, and putting emphasis on northern European brands like Tiger of Sweden, Gestuz, Hope or Whyred. And founders Marianne Margarethe Weber and Carolin Taurer are about to introduce four-year-old Danish brand Just Female. While the roots of Nico & Sasha's stock have certainly rubbed off on the store's interior design–it feels a bit like a Swedish country house, with vintage coffee tables, scented candles, a blue and white print upholstered couch and matching chairs–the space's previous tenants–gallerists–have been an inspiration too. Following in their footsteps, Weber and Taurer have now set up their first art exhibit, showing the works of Berlin-based photographer Anika Büssemeier. Like the down-to-earth identity of Nico & Sasha's Scandinavian brands, Büssemeier's photos are equally realistic, with a strong documentary angle. "In her work, she really reports on a moment," says Weber, "and that's what we're aiming to do with our clothes too." Hence, the stock includes super-wearable pieces like loosely fitted Whyred sweaters, Suit's red wool cardigans and navy hooded raincoats, Hope's sleeveless trench dresses and a series of simple button-down shirts like Tiger of Sweden's white ones, Q1's striped versions and Margaret Howell's plaid numbers. "In the same way these clothes are very classic, my photography is traditional too," explains Büssemeier. Her exhibit's theme, however, is far from usual. It mixes night shots of Berlin's urban landscape with Coney Island beach impressions. |

America’s Next Top Model Winner Will Cover Vogue Italia Posted: 20 May 2010 11:30 AM PDT
All we can say is: Wowwowweewa!?*@$*@# Actually, that’s not true. Here’s what else we can say: This is clearly the work of Mr. André Leon Talley, Vogue editor extraordinaire and Top Model judge. And it indicates that the contestants will prove a bit more “polished” next year. While the competition show has downgraded its title affiliation several times over the years (from Elle to ElleGIRL to Seventeen), we’re not sure that this trade-up actually matters to the greater audience. The presence of ALT and Francesca Sozzani may impress industry insiders, but will the majority of Top Model followers really care? Or will it get new people to watch? We’re doubtful. |
All Saints Opens in SoHo Tomorrow Posted: 20 May 2010 11:00 AM PDT
While Americans may not be familiar with the brand, we can guarantee that it’s worth investigating. All Saints has the perfect mix of ruggedness, edginess, and wearability, not to mention accessible prices. I visited their showroom earlier in the week, and I am not lying when I say I wanted to leave with everything. From their soft leather vests to their intricately designed, flowing dresses, All Saints has unique and chic items for everyone. The greatest part is the quality in relation to the price. The most expensive item is a shearling jacket at around $1,000. Most items fall in the $250-$600 range, comparable to most contemporary brands. There are also men’s and children’s collections, so bring your whole family to the store. You can bet I’ll be shopping the collection tomorrow in SoHo. See you there! |

Fashion News Roundup: Kate Gets Wet, Bags Get Smaller, & Courtney Falls in Love Posted: 20 May 2010 09:00 AM PDT
Internationally Charged: YSL’s power adapter allows you to really travel in style. It’s a lot chicer than what you’ll get at the airport, no? {The Moment} Shrinkage: Tommy Ton noticed a trend towards small bags. It’s making my leopard-print backpack feel outré. {Jak&Jil} Fall Campaigns Get Crowded: Multi-model ads are becoming a trend with Loewe reportedly booking Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio and Miu Miu tapping Ginta Lapina, Daphne Groenveld, and more shot my Mert & Marcus. {Fashionologie} Hotties From Days of Yore: If you love embarrassing childhood photos, then newly launched Beforeyouwerehot.com is a goldmine. Even better you can see how the kids look now. {Before You Were Hot} Courtney Takes Love Seriously: Courtney Love is still insisting that she had a steamy affair with Kate Moss. Totally weird, but who doesn’t love Kate? {Vogue UK} |
Most Influential Personal Style Bloggers Posted: 20 May 2010 08:00 AM PDT
Personal style bloggers put themselves out there. Not only do they share their favorite fashions, trends, and ideas, they also take pictures of themselves wearing their favorite looks on a daily basis. So it’s no wonder those in the fashion industry and beyond have embraced personal style bloggers as internet celebrities. Brands like Coach and Urban Outfitters have even hired some of them to design product. Fashionista’s compiled a list of the most influential personal style bloggers right now: The ones really worth the advertising campaigns, endorsement deals and guest design stints. While our methods aren’t scientific, we did take these factors into consideration: monthly unique users, monthly pageviews, Twitter followers, Google News mentions, and the amount–and what kind of–advertising these style sensations have on their Web sites. We also considered the overall appeal of the person. (For more information on our methodology, email us.) Here’s our list. Who’d be on yours? |
