Debunking the The Telegraph’s “Top Ten Dresses of the Past 50 Years” Story Posted: 19 May 2010 12:36 PM PDT
What we got was Ginger Spice’s Union Jack, Elizabeth Hurley’s safety pin Versace, and Bjork’s dead swan. Sure, those dresses are iconic, but in a “Ew, we can’t believe that happened” kind of way. (Editor’s note: I liked Hurley’s Versace.) Even more shocking is the fact that Hilary Alexander is credited as the author of this story, and she certainly knows better than to worship the tragic fashions of Britain’s most famous. So we dug a little deeper. The list was generated from a reader poll on the site Offers Supermarket, an online retailer with zero fashion credibility whatsoever. Their featured item: a “Barby on a Budget.” (That’s a barbeque on a budget, btw.) So why would Hilary Alexander pick up a story from Offers Supermarket? That’s like running the Most Iconic Jewelry as voted by Home Depot customers. Apparently, Offers Supermarket is famous for their wacky polls, previously naming Kim Kardashian as the Most Envied Body and Facebook as Best Invention. We still don’t get why The Telegraph would run this story without alerting readers to the joke. Maybe these polls are really popular in Britain, and we’re on the outside of the actual joke? We decided to do right and compile our own list of the 10 most iconic dresses of the past 50 years. Click through the gallery to see our picks. |
Last Night’s Parties: JNBY Lands in SoHo, Where Everyone Wears Army Jackets Posted: 19 May 2010 11:58 AM PDT
Plenty of party goers were decked in head-to-toe JNBY (Just Naturally Be Yourself), including Sophomore designer Chrissie Miller, who DJed, and Lissy Trullie, who performed a short set. While the China Brasserie dim sum on offer was difficult to ignore, we were more enamored with JNBY’s fall collection (All images included in this story are from the look book). Produced by a collective of 12 Chinese designers, the line is more than a tad utilitarian, with lots of little leather bombers, trench coats, duffel coats and Luke Skywalker-inspired leggings. Other than the clothes we wanted to buy, we also noticed some we already own. In particular: Army jackets. Pretty much every person in the room was wearing one. Of course, it was raining last night, but we wonder: Is the military look as ubiquitous as the Breton shirt? |

Steven Klein Steals From Himself in New Lady Gaga Video Posted: 19 May 2010 10:01 AM PDT
We had great expectations for the video, but recycling a theme from a magazine editorial was not one of them. There are boys with jet black bowl cuts, a dominant female figure, and a brooding, inscrutable mood. Even stranger is the rumor that Lara Stone will appear in the Alejandro video, meaning that Steven recreated the shoot right down to the model. Don’t get us wrong, we love Mr. Klein and we thought the W editorial was awesome, but why repeat a concept? We can’t imagine that Lady Gaga would want to be associated with something old, either. Her love of newness and shock value do not make her seem like one to rely on an existing idea. There will definitely be more themes in the video, so we’ll wait until its release to make any final judgments. We wouldn’t be opposed to a Steven Klein’s Greatest Hits theme at all; we just didn’t think Lady Gaga would be the one to do it. Though Telephone was a Tarantino right down to the Pussy Wagon. Maybe Gaga’s new mantra is celebrating the artistic vision of others? |
