Zac Posen Will Show SS11 in Paris

Posted: 14 May 2010 07:20 AM PDT

Zac Posen used to throw grand nighttime runway shows in the Bryant Park tents, until he scaled back to intimate morning affairs in the Altman Building, but now he’s going even farther back in the other direction and planning to show his SS11 collection in Paris.

Why? He says, "they understand my clothes." They being the Parisians, which means we, being the Americans, don’t get it.

The thing is, Zac’s company’s just barely back on track after a very, very, shaky time. Between Target, Z-Spoke and the Chelsea apartment building he had a hand in, they’re probably in a better financial place than they’ve been in a couple of years, but that doesn’t mean they should spend all of that money on a Parisian extravaganza.

Even if his clothes are selling better in France, or Europe, than they are in the States, he’s better off staging a small presentation in whichever city he pleases and abandoning a proper show altogether. Plus, Zac, we get your clothes—and we love them.

Gap Plans to Spin Off 1969 Denim Into Its Own Entity. What Does That Mean for Patrick Robinson?

Posted: 13 May 2010 02:25 PM PDT

In another major move at the corporate level, Gap Inc. has hired former Seven for All Mankind exec Rosella Giuliani to run the 1969 division of Gap. At Seven for All Mankind, Giuliani was in charge of both merchandising and design.

Company CEO Glenn Murphy recognizes that Gap–its core brand–is also its weakest link, and he wants to make 1969 its shining star. (Think of 1969 as Gap’s Free People. You used to be able to buy Free People stuff at Urban Outfitters, but now it’s in department stores and its own boutiques.)

Giuliani will report to chief designer Patrick Robinson. She’ll also report to Marka Hansen, president of Gap North America.

Do we think this news hints that Robinson is on his way out?

Look, Murphy isn’t a fashion guy. He used to run drug stores. And more than anything, he cares about making money. While we don’t think Robinson is in danger just yet, he won’t be at Gap a year from now if things haven’t improved.

Sorry, Hello! SkinnyJeans Don’t Make You Look Any Skinnier

Posted: 13 May 2010 12:35 PM PDT

I'm quite sure there's not a person among us who doesn't sort of dread shopping for jeans. It doesn't matter what size you are. Unflattering jeans are a downer.

So I was excited to try some hello! SkinnyJeans, which claim to make you look 15 pounds thinner. For the record, I have hips and wear a completely average size 28-29 in denim and am about 5′5″. Sorry for the overshare, but I also happen to be feeling a bit puffy right now, so I thought it would be the perfect time to try these.

I got three different styles in various sizes sent to me from hello! SkinnyJeans. Yes, that's their name. Let me just say that there are a few things I'm snobby about (handbags, for instance), but jeans aren't one of them. I love whatever makes my butt look good. So I was willing to overlook the name and give them a try. At least it's not as bad as "Not Your Daughter’s Jeans."

I tried the Barely BootCut, SkinnyP's (a petite cut), and Bone Structure GreenJeans, which are treated with a special environmentally-friendly wash. All of them were very dark indigo.

PROS:

  • The waistband is really comfortable and at the perfect rise–not too high and not too low. The no-muffin-top claim is accurate, although the SkinnyP's were too low for me. Clearly I'm not a candidate for petite sizing.
  • Huge variety of sizes. They offer waist sizes up to 38 and several different inseam lengths.
  • There isn't any ornamentation, logo, or other junk cluttering up the back pockets. Clean, big pockets are the most minimizing, and hello! gets this concept.
  • They didn't sag at the end of the day.

CONS:

  • They are way too stretchy. The amount of nylon/elastane is higher than that in some jegging styles. Plus, you are told to "do a plié" as you put them on in order to get the inner seam facing the right way. In the interest of scientific research, I put them on while doing a plié, took them off, and then put them on sans plié: no difference in appearance, at least not to the naked eye.

  • The price: $178-$188 and higher for corduroy styles. This is J Brand territory without the amazing design. I have stretchy Pookie & Sebastian jeans that feel the same and they were $60.
  • The dye got all over everything. To be fair, they warn you not to wear "fine whites" until you've washed the jeans a few times. My hands and legs were dark blue by the end of the day. Yuck.
  • I definitely did not look 15 pounds thinner. I didn't even look five pounds thinner.
  • A lot of the styles are bootcut, and the company claims this is universally flattering. Two out of three of the Fashionista office disagrees about this. The GreenJeans actually have more of a straight leg and looked much better than the Barely BootCut styles on me.
  • The whiskering and faded line down the front and back just looks too fake.

The bottom line: These are really stretchy jeans that are fairly comfortable but not earth-shattering in terms of fit or style.

Behind the Scenes on Kate Spade’s Twirl Shoot

Posted: 13 May 2010 11:30 AM PDT

Last month Kate Spade announced they were launching a new fragrance, Twirl, their first since 2002. They’re going for young and hip this time around, under Deborah Lloyd’s creative direction. Elissa Santisi styled Lonneke Engel and dozens of dancers for the jazz inspired shoot at the Box. The print ads will debut at the end of the summer, but we’re thrilled to premiere a behind the scenes peek at the shoot in action.

André’s So Proud of Chanel

Posted: 13 May 2010 10:43 AM PDT

“Lagerfeld had cast the show with a slightly more curvaceous model named Crystal Renn, not seen on any Chanel catwalk before. This in itself was groundbreaking for the house, but there was also the return of personality models encouraged to be themselves instead of robotic look-alikes.” –André Leon Talley on Chanel’s resort show. (We’d like to add our own emphasis to “slightly more curvaceous.” Is it our imagination or have Crystal Renn’s curves been shrinking?)

First Look: Katie Ermilio, Fall 2010

Posted: 13 May 2010 10:00 AM PDT

In the tradition of Lyn Devon and Isabel Toledo, Katie Ermilio is one of those special women’s designers determined to grow her business by creating made-to-measure, New York-produced pieces for private clients. (She’s also stocked at Boyd’s, a fancy department store in Philadelphia.) The Bergdorf account? That’ll come.

The first time I met Katie was last fall at her New York studio, where she presented her Spring 2010 collection. At 23, she was already so aware of her own vision as well as the needs and wants of her customer. Born into a family of tailors, the former Vogue intern and Teen Vogue public relations assistant apprenticed at her parent’s Philadelphia shop before launching her own collection. But she’s been designing–and wearing–her own clothes since age 12, so you could say she’s an old fashion soul.

This season, Ermilio’s dreamed up a collection of suit separates, evening gowns and cocktail attire that any lady–from 16 to 60–would be thrilled to don. The cream romper with matching tuxedo blazer would be an incredible unconventional wedding dress choice, while the rust-colored Grecian frock can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion–or your mood. I pretty much want every, single suit. And a few of the dresses, too. Click through to see more from Katie’s look book.

Fashion News Roundup: Vogue Summers, the WAGs Prepare for the World Cup & Marc’s Up for Grabs

Posted: 13 May 2010 09:00 AM PDT

Bundled: Everything about this image screams summer. Jem Mitchell shot Fei Fei Sun for the June issue of Vogue China. Now if only the sun would come out and we could swipe our pink lipstick, all would be swell. {Models}

Break-up: PR Consulting and Balenciaga have parted ways after 12 years together. Both claim it was an amicable split, but of course no one believes that. Leave your theories after the jump! {WWD}

In It to Win It: Racked is giving away a bunch of Marc Jacobs’ new BookMarc branded merchandise—pencils, notebooks and other unnecessary, but super cute school supplies. {Racked}

Hippie Chicks: It’s bathing suit season somewhere in the world, so Vogue is ready with your must-haves which apparently means anything tie-dye. Works for us. {Vogue}

Soccer Studs: People may be into Cannes, but the world will obsess over the world cup in South Africa next month. Sure there’s soccer, but there will be fashion, too, led by the British WAGs (wives and girlfriends) who aren’t exactly known for their subtlety. {Guardian}

Clothes Call: Here’s a peek at the Net-a-Porter offices where everything’s as sleek and perfect as we imagined. If we made our way in, we’d probably never leave. {ImranAmed}

Kate Hudson’s the New Face of Almay

Posted: 13 May 2010 08:07 AM PDT

Kate Hudson’s the last starlet we’d peg for a beauty campaign—fresh faced is probably the first thing that comes to mind when looking at her.

She’s the ultimate California girl with natural (perfect) blonde hair, blue eyes, shiny skin, and maybe a swipe of lip gloss.

We guess that’s why she chose Almay, “Almay is known for its fresh, effortless approach to beauty,” she said in a statement.

She’ll do all of the usual work: commercials, print ads and online campaigns, as well as participate in philanthropic initiatives spearheaded by the company (which is owned by Revlon).

But really it’s a massive win for Almay, whose current face Elaine Irwin Mellencamp (as in John) targets a completely different, and much older market. No one talks about Almay, but everyone talks about Kate Hudson.
