10 Looks Inspired By This Weekend’s Royal Polo Match (Or What to Wear to Impress HRH Prince Henry of Wales)

This Sunday, the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic returns to Governor’s Island, and marks the return of Prince Harry to NYC. The match benefits (in our opinion) the hotter Prince’s charity, the American Friends of Sentebale, which provides aid for orphans and at-risk youth in Lesotho. He’ll play against polo-playing Polo model Nacho Figueras. Yum.

So we got inspired by the idea of dressing for a fancy polo match. (If only we could look as good as Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman…) Here are our top ten polo-perfect picks.

My Excellent J.Crew Wedding Store Adventure

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 02:00 PM PDT

Getting married is really fun!

I know it’s stressful for a lot of brides, but I’m lucky. My parents/fiance’s parents are totally hands-off when it comes to planning, and I’ve nailed down so many specifics already that as of late, my main focus has been The Dress.

I’m 99% percent sure I’m going to go custom, but I thought it would still be smart to check out J.Crew’s new wedding boutique on Madison Ave.

I brought along my friend Ali, who is also getting married next year, and who also happens to be obsessed with J.Crew, to try on dresses as well.

I’m so glad I did–Not only did we learn a lot about this sector of the brand, but we also modeled some incredible dresses, as well as gobs of stunning accessories.

First, I was greeted by Kate M., my personal sales associate for the appointment. (She was accompanied by the lovely Candy.) These girls were amazing. They were so excited about everything, from the La Perla robes in the changing rooms to the array of sashes to the shoes. Their enthusiasm was infectious. But more on that later.

Apocalypse Now: Five Styles I’m Going to Try If the World Is Ending

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 01:00 PM PDT

Last week, a giant statue of Jesus was hit with a lightning bolt and burned to the ground—regardless of what faith you keep, that seems like a pretty universal sign for "not good." Here are five trends I'd like to try—pending, of course, that the world's going to end either way.

1. The Mohawk.
Can't get any more extreme than that, right? I have absolutely no idea how a Mohawk would look on me, but there's only one way to find out. The main thing that's stopped me from trying it out sooner is the fear of what happens after I get bored with it—can you imagine how that looks halfway grown-out?

Thankfully, I suspect the world will take only a few days, tops, to end from start to finish. And, if there's a sudden change of plans and the world is saved, I'm sure my mind will be on other things (such as the near-collapse of everything I know and love). Perfect scenario for trying a Mohawk!

Best Dressed: Green Does McQueen, Russo Rocks Rodarte and We Double Up On Dolce

Alexa makes YSL leather shorts look wearable; Anna’s Rodarte is amazing; Eva looks flawless in McQueen; and there were so many good looks to choose from at the recent Dolce & Gabbana party, but we narrowed it down to two of our favorite fashion girls.

Would You Go Topless?

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 11:00 AM PDT

Yesterday, at the Forever 21 opening, a group of us got into a discussion about going topless at places other than a nude beach. (See these Standard Hotel NSFW party pictures to get a sense of how we landed on the topic.)

Leah mentioned that it seems almost chic or trendy to take off your shirt, and/or bra, as much as you can these days, (but she concedes that she may have just not noticed it in the past). We all concurred.

Of course, one must look no further than Purple Diary for proof. I said that, while I wouldn’t go topless, I might if I looked like Camille Bidault Waddington.

Pretty much every other person in our little group said that no top was a definite no-no for them. But of course, what I really want to know is, are you blasé about stripping down to your thong? Or will you always keep your top on?

Fashion News Roundup: La Roux Acoustic, Vogue Gets Serious & an Unlikely Pin-Up Calendar

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 09:55 AM PDT

A Pinup Calendar for the Skull and Bones Set: In an ingenious feat of marketing, the Eizo X-Ray company has released a pin-up calendar in which the models are shot entirely in, you guessed it, x-ray vision. Creepy, enchanting, and perfectly quirky. {Nylon}

La Roux's Elly Jackson Provides Soundtrack To Viktor & Rolf's Menswear Show:The La Roux front woman toned it down this week to acoustically accompany the new line at Paris fashion week. {StyleFile}

Sponge Chic?: Project Runway’s Christian Siriano has recently teamed up with 3M to design…kitchen sponges. We’re as confused as you are. {Stylist}

Vogue Suddenly Very Pissed Off: The July issue boasted a full-page rant about Ke$ha, crinolines, and consumerism–there’s not much more we can say about this, except, “huh?” Go see for yourself. {Fashion Indie}

Bono Still A Hippie (But For A Good Cause): Edun, the ethical clothing line owned by U2 frontman Bono and wife Ali Hewson, just launched its first pre-fall collection. The line, which consists of tees designed by Kenyan schoolchildren, will be sold exclusively at Liberty to help pay for school supplies for the very kids who helped design them. {Ecouterre}

Over 90,000 Square Feet of Forever 21 Opens in Times Square

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 09:20 AM PDT

Forever 21’s new Times Square flagship opens today, and we got a sneak peak inside last night.

First impression: The store is ENORMOUS. There are four very brightly-lit floors chock full of fast fashion totaling 91,257 square feet of retail space. That makes Forever 21’s Times Square location the largest single brand apparel store in Manhattan. To drive the point home, there is, no joke, a real life taxicab on the bottom floor. (For you intrepid New Yorkers looking to participate in the store’s opening day festivities, or snag one of the 1,000 gift certificates valued up to $210, the store is located at 1540 Broadway.)

After we stopped gaping at the sheer size of the place, we took a little tour of the four floors, stopping at specially designated “shopping stations” where we snagged a super soft caution-tape patterned racer-back tank designed by Brian Lichtenberg, and an adorable printed tank designed by Danny Roberts. (The Brian Lichtenberg tank goes on sale in July, the Danny Roberts tank is available now.)

FashionToast’s Rumi Neely is the poster girl for the new flagship, and she was on hand last night with her photographer/boyfriend to, from what we could tell, look hot and pose sulkily.

Despite the store’s massive size, 151 dressing rooms, and 32 registers, it is, after all, Forever 21, it’s in Times Square, and we’re sure it will be a mob scene in no time.

I Need, I Want, I Have to Have: MiH’s Vienna Jean

Posted: 25 Jun 2010 08:55 AM PDT

It’s kind of awesome that full-on bell bottoms look fresh again, but I don’t want to give up my skinnies just yet.

Luckily, most denim designers share my sentiment. At WSGN’s Future of Denim panel, held last week at Parsons, panelists/designers/stylists Emily Current and Merritt Elliott said that as much as they love bell bottoms, there’s no denying that the skinny leg is now a wardrobe staple.

Which leads me to MiH’s Vienna jean in the perfect sky blue. (They call the color Stream.) The pair has a low–but not too low–rise, a very tapered silhouette, and minimal detailing. I’ve been looking for a pair of jeans in this color for quite some time now, and I think these might be it.
