Gwyneth to Grace an Upcoming Cover of American Vogue: Could it Be the September Issue?

Posted: 08 Jun 2010 07:00 AM PDT

A tipster informs us that Gwyneth Paltrow shot an editorial for Vogue with Mario Testino this past Saturday at her Manhattan apartment.

The next day, Testino shot a fall collection editorial in Tribeca with Noah Mills and Carmen Kass.

Could this be September issue material? The timing sure is right.

If so, let’s hope the cover is more like this and less like this.

CFDA Awards: Who Won, Who Didn’t and Who Brought Tears To My Eyes

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 09:09 PM PDT

Tonight at the CFDA Awards, actor Anthony Mackie said that the event really is the Oscars of fashion. As one of the few people in the crowd who has attended both ceremonies, he should know.

And it did seem like an abbreviated, less-hokey Academy Awards.

There were skits–Diddy starred in a short that introduced the menswear nominees–celebrity presenters–Isabella Rossellini, Jessica Biel–and even some heartfelt speeches.

Stay-tuned tomorrow for our round-up of the evening’s best-dressed. And now, the winners:

Womenswear Designer of the Year: Marc Jacobs
Can I say how well-deserved this was? Regardless of how we feel about his changed persona, Marc’s Fall 2010 collection was one of his strongest in years. Wearable yet directional, it represented the Marc Jacobs brand at its best. In his speech, Marc thanked every single designer on the women’s team, as well as everyone from his production manager to his publicist to his business partner Robert Duffy. And the speech was wonderfully hand-written on several pieces of paper, with letters so large the audience could see it clearly on the jumbo screen.

Menswear Designer of the Year: Rag & Bone
This is when I got a bit verklempt. I was sitting a row behind the Rag & Bone boys–David Neville and Marcus Waingwright–as well as their wives, Gucci Westman and Glenna Neece. As nominees were announced, the foursome sat hand-in-hand, smiling and offering glances of encouragement. When Rag & Bone was indeed called and the guys headed up to the podium, the women clasped hands and and kept smiling at each other.

For some reason, this really got to me. It was just so obvious that these guys were a team, and that their companions were part of that team, and that they all had a ton of mutual love and respect for each other. And it made me really happy.

Accessories Designer of the Year: Alexis Bittar

Steff just spent a wonderful afternoon at Alexis Bittar’s DUMBO studio, so I was extra-pleased to see the designer at the podium.

Swarovski Womenswear Designer of the Year: Jason Wu
Wu was up against the incredibly talented Prabal Gurung and Joseph Altuzarra, so this might have been the closest category of the evening. He accepted graciously, telling the crowd that he would be pinching himself when he got home that evening to make sure that it was all real.

Swarovski Menswear Designer of the Year: Richard Chai
Chai thanked his former employers–nominee Donna Karan and winner Marc Jacobs–as well his devoted staff. Oh, and Hayden Christensen, whom he dressed for the evening.

Swarovski Accessories Designer of the Year: Alexander Wang
Nominated in both this and the Womenswear Designer of the Year category, Wang’s still got incredible momentum. And this well-crafted accessories collection will allow him to push ahead even further.

Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award: Michael Kors
Anna Wintour presented this award to Michael Kors. More importantly, she told a story about how Michael once waded in the ocean for hours in order to avoid Ralph Lauren–who was vacationing on the same beach–because he didn’t want Lauren to see him in his swim trunks. It was funny–and so was Anna.

International Award: Christopher Bailey
Karan presented this award to former employee Bailey, who offered up one of his strongest collections yet for Fall 2010. It was lovely to see how much mutual admiration they have for each other.

Eugenia Sheppard Award: Kim Hastreiter
Paper’s Kim Hastreiter is awesome. And the short film trailing her day-to-day life–from her office to her famous dinner parties–made me want to be her protege. It also helps that she gave the best quote of the evening: “Just because you’re cute and rich doesn’t mean you design great stuff!”

Fashion Icon Award: Iman
It was a treat to see a montage of images of the legendary model, from her early days to more recent shoots. Her look is still so incredibly unique, as is her exuberant energy.

Eleanor Lambert Award: Tonne Goodman
So, my favorite ensemble of the evening? Hands-down it was Tonne Goodman’s. She wore a black button down blouse tucked into a black sequined mermaid skirt (that I want to say was Ralph but I haven’t yet confirmed.)

CFDA Board of Directors' Special Tribute Award: Alexander McQueen
Sarah Jessica Parker gave a little tribute speech to McQueen, and it was lovely. As was the mini-runway show of his last collection, which brought chills down my spine. I felt privileged to be a part of the industry at that moment.

Trendspotting at Oscar de la Renta

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 04:00 PM PDT

When we think of Oscar de la Renta, we don’t think trendy. Yet that’s what we got at his Resort 2011 runway show. What we observed:

1. Lindsey Wixson is most popular model of the season. She’s been around for awhile now, but Lindsey Wixson is the star of the Resort shows. This trend is sure to carry on through September.

2. Straw hats, reminiscent of those worn by Coco Chanel, are de rigueur.
Jason Wu showed them last week, Oscar showed them today, and we’ll definitely see them during the Spring 2011 shows. The look is currently a favorite of Tokyo’s Harajuku girls.

3. Don’t say goodbye to stripes. The Breton stripe may feel burned, but de la Renta’s not letting go just yet. He showed two navy and white striped sweaters that were too classically-styled to cast aside as a flash in the pan.

4. Ball gowns really are back. The third-to-last look, a kelly green ball gown, felt really modern, despite it’s old-fashioned proportions. As did a short taupe dress with an exaggerated peplum attached.

5. When you want to sparkle, do it in black. There were sparkly non-black numbers, but the two jet cocktail dresses truly shined.

6. Desiree Rogers remains terribly chic and in-demand. Today’s front row star sat next to another Oscar fan: Anna Wintour.

Breaking: Lela Rose’s Models Will Stomp on Her 20 Foot Long Table Tomorrow

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 03:03 PM PDT

Lela Rose’s clothes are decidedly ladylike, but she’s moving out of her comfort zone for tomorrow’s Resort 2011 presentation, taking place at her new downtown apartment.

We have it on good authority that the models will pose on Rose’s 20 ft. long table. which descends from the ceiling, adding a subversive layer to an otherwise perfectly pristine presentation.

We can’t wait to see the girls…and the table…up-close. We’ll post our review of the collection tomorrow afternoon. Until then, check out these gorgeous images from Lela’s loft in T.

Adventures in Copyright: Everyone Loves Givenchy

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 12:10 PM PDT

It’s undeniable that Givenchy’s SS10 collection was a landmark moment for the house and designer Ricardo Tisci. A little bit tribal, a little bit psychedlic, the clothes are über popular, most recently seen on the backs of the attendees of the Marina Abramhovic dinner at MoMA.

Most popular, it seems, is the black and white blazer seen at left. An optical eye-catcher, this design was a hit on the runway, and a hit in stores–only without the Givenchy label. Both Zara and Anthropologie have created blazers highly resembling the Givenchy piece.

Anthropologie

First, let’s look at the Anthropologie blazer.

The striping in almost exactly the same, with larger white stripes and thin black ones spaced evenly apart. The collar shape is similar, with the stripes on the Anthropologie blazer making a slight V, as opposed to Givenchy’s straight lines. The Anthropologie blazer also has not buttons, just like the Givenchy. There’s really no way that this isn’t intended as an affordable copy of the Givenchy piece. And at $98 it’s still pricey for not-the-real-thing.

Zara

The Zara blazer is a little different from the Givenchy.

While it mimics the striping of the Givenchy, it’s tailored to nip in at the waist, and it has black piping trimming the collar, sleeves, and pockets. We can’t really say this is a copy of the Givenchy, but it’s probably an attempt to get in on the striped blazer trend started at Givenchy. A little less expensive at $79.90, it’s not a totally ridiculous buy.

Would you rock a faux Givenchy, or are you holding out for the real thing?

Natalie Portman Is the New Face of Parfums Christian Dior: But Which Will Be Her Signature Scent?

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 11:30 AM PDT

Natalie Portman is the latest A-lister to team up with Parfums Christian Dior. Other celebs who rep the brand’s fragrances include Charlize Theron, Sharon Stone and Jude Law.

But which scent will she pose for?

Charlize does J’adore, and Sharon does Poison. So we’re guessing it’ll be Miss Dior Cherie.

The fresh, youthful scent–which re-launched during the 2008 holiday season–hasn’t had a new campaign since Sofia Coppola’s lovely commercial starring model Maryna Linchuk.

Natalie seems like the perfect choice to follow Maryna. Unless, of course, Dior is launching a new fragrance….

Boutique Peek: Shotwell on Grant Ave., San Francisco

Posted: 07 Jun 2010 09:00 AM PDT

I recently took a trip to San Francisco, and what can I say? Holy shopping, Batman! There’s good vintage on Haight Street, and thrift shopping in the Mission. And just around the corner from Union Square–the neighborhood that houses high street favorites such as H&M, Zara, Urban Outfitters, etc.–sits Shotwell.

Shotwell is a two story, loft-like space with a brilliant mix of cool-kid brands like Elizabeth and James, Cheap Monday, Play by Comme des Garcons, J. Brand, and Jeffrey Campbell, as well as vintage finds that store owners Holly and Michael Weaver have collected from all around.

The couple spends tons of time scouring the country for limited quantity, vintage, and dead-stock items because they really understand the exclusivity game. Shoppers love the feeling of owning something that only a handful of other people have. (It really is awesome, isn't it?)

Holly and Michael started Shotwell only a few years ago, selling vintage items out of their garage on Shotwell Street (hence the store's name), eventually setting up little pop-up shops here and there. After gaining enough momentum, the permanent location on Grant Ave. opened.

Once a month, the couple organizes an in-store event with a DJ, drinks and of course, shopping. Most recently, they threw a party debuting new summer stock: Guests were treated with free manicures.

Not heading to SF any time soon? Don’t frent: Shotwell sells select items online. Albeit only a soft-launch for now, the fully shop-able site with both mens and women’s items will be ready for clicking this coming fall. Until then, be sure to check out their Facebook and Twitter pages, which are constantly being updated with new goodies, as well as news on upcoming events.

Shotwell 320 Grant Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94108. 415-399-9898. Open Mon-Sat noon – 8pm, Sun noon – 7pm.
