Last Spring, a tricked-out Topshop truck showered the city with gift cards and tote bags in anticipation of the store’s opening. Since this Wednesday, the same truck has been on a promotional tour around the city. We wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so we decided to, quite literally, get our hands dirty and head over to McCarren Park in Billyburg for Day 3.

What we found was a full-on t-shirt customization workshop, so we grabbed a free tee, and with some help and inspiration from a few well-dressed Topshop employees, gave it a full-on Fashionista makeover. While ours was certainly not the most intricate or detailed, it was pretty easy to make and we are proud of it, so here are some step-by-step instructions in case you want to make your own!

What you’ll need:

- White t-shirt
- Paper bag or cardboard
- Pen
- Scissors
- Spray Paint (we used black and gold metallic)
- Scraps of lace

What to do:
1. Put a piece of paper or cardboard inside the shirt so that paint doesn’t bleed through to the other side.
2. On either the back or the front (wherever you want a lot going on-we did the back), spread a piece of lace about 5 inches wide across the bottom of the shirt. Make sure the shirt and the lace are as flat as possible.
3. Spray black paint over the lace. Then remove the lace. Voila!
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 closer to the top of the shirt.
5. With the paper bag or cardboard, draw a heart. With the scissors, cut out the heart from the inside, so that you make a stencil.
6. Put the heart “stencil” over the left side of the top lace motif and spray with black. Repeat in the middle of the shirt and again near the bottom right side.
7. Write out FASHIONISTA (or something else, if you want) in block letters on the paper bag or cardboard and cut out the letters from the inside like you did with the heart. This takes a while.
8. Once your word stencil is complete, place it over the shirt where there is no spray paint and make sure it’s as flat as possible. You might want to use something to hold it down.
9. Spray each letter with the gold metallic. Then remove the stencil. Voila again!
10. WAIT UNTIL IT’S DRY BEFORE YOU MOVE IT OR TURN IT OVER. (not that we failed to do that or anything)
11. Cut sleeves and neckline to desired style. We did a tank with big armholes.
12. On the front we kept it simple with a big black stripe and spray-on lace by the shoulders
13. Figure out a way to get spray paint off your hands and, please, let me know.

They also handed us a little key that, when taken to the store, may or may not “unlock” a “wardrobe” of $250 worth of Topshop summer dresses. (Isn’t that like 2 dresses?)

If you didn’t make it to Brooklyn yesterday, fear not. Day 4 promises even more summer fun and little raffle-keys. Head to the SoHo flagship today for their “Pop Up Summer,” replete with a faux beach and frozen lemonade.

Happy summer!
