First Look: Mark Fast for Topshop Posted: 15 Jun 2010 05:41 AM PDT
We’re pining for the lilac crochet dress covered in tiny holes, but the real star is quite obviously the black long-sleeved dress with matte, rubberized beading. There’s also a pale pink skirt–perhaps for the less daring–and a black sleeveless dress that almost shimmers. Click through to see the looks. Our question is: Will you put down some cash for Fast? |
Ralph Lauren to Sell Off Part of His Stake in Polo Posted: 15 Jun 2010 05:00 AM PDT
The designer and his family are set to receive somewhere between $750 million and $870 million, depending on how many shares are sold–Lauren says he’ll give up 9 million to 10.35 million shares. (We valued that dollar figure at yesterday’s closing price–$84 per share–which means it could differ greatly depending on the price of the shares when they’re actually sold.) Lauren is still the majority shareholder in the company, which means his role isn’t changing. Since son David Lauren is being groomed to take over the firm (probably not in a design capacity but most definitely in a leadership capacity) pending his father’s retirement, we doubt much more of the company will be offered up to the public–or other shareholders within Polo. Lauren is currently 70-years-old, which means his retirement will likely happen within the next decade. |
5 Pairs of Shoes That Are Worth The Investment Posted: 14 Jun 2010 04:15 PM PDT
A couple of years back, a friend of mine wore these Burberry studded platform sandals from the Fall 2007 runway. They were sexy, slightly tough, and managed to make even the simplest outfit chic. Even if I could have afforded to buy these beauties, they were completely sold out–probably due to the fact that editors and celebrities everywhere were spotted in them. While I’ve never splurged on a pair of designer shoes, I’ve made a little promise to myself: When I land my first full-time job, I will treat myself to one…even if it takes a few months of saving. Although that day hasn’t arrived, I’ve compiled a list of shoes that I think are worth the extreme price-tags. The picks might not all be classics, but they’re so special that you’ll surely wear them again and again. PS: I still scour eBay every once in a while hoping to come across my Burberry dream shoes in a size 37. |
Isabella Blow’s Collection Sold To Daphne Guinness Posted: 14 Jun 2010 03:35 PM PDT
The collection of clothing and photography was originally planned to go up for auction in September, and each piece would have been sold separately. In Hilary Alexander’s story for the Telegraph, she writes that “the buyer wishes to remain private, but is committed to keeping the collection together.” Later, the New York Times added an interesting fact: The wardrobe, which includes 90 McQueen outfits, several early dresses by John Galliano, and over 50 hats by Philip Treacy, was bought by avant-garde heiress Daphne Guinness. Christie’s PR would not confirm or deny that Guinness in fact purchased the collection, but it seems fitting that the fashion maven would want to keep Blow’s iconic compilation together. "It's Issy – it's her D.N.A, it should not be scattered to the four winds,” Guinness stated. We really hope this means that Guinness plans to donate or lend the collection to a museum so that others can view it. Guinness plans to put her own collection of McQueen on display at FIT next September. Maybe Blow’s collection will be added to that exhibition? We couldn’t agree more with Guinness’ sentiment that the Blow collection should be treated as a piece of fashion history. "Like any artist, it should not be dispersed, but remain as a monument with people having access to it," she said. |
A Very Special Street Style: Isle of Wight Festival Edition Posted: 14 Jun 2010 02:30 PM PDT
Attendees kept festival fashions distinctly British, with acres of denim, over-sized floral prints, white-gray hair, vintage pieces, headbands, and obligatory Hunter boots. As for the mud? The better to make your wellies look more authentic, my dear…. Click through for images of–and interviews with–some of our favorite (civilian) concert-goers. |

Cynthia Rowley Will Do “Street-Side” Resort Presentations at Condé Nast, Hearst and Time, Inc. Posted: 14 Jun 2010 12:47 PM PDT
So she’s doing them a favor by bringing her resort collection to the source. Tomorrow, the designer will host “street-side” presentations at Condé Nast from 1-2pm, at Hearst from 3-4pm and Time, Inc. from 5-6pm. Cute idea, but may we make a suggestion for the future? Have one down on Greene Street by the Nylon offices, or on East 19th Street near BlackBook. There are a lot of independent magazines down here–and a lot of bloggers–which means it would be great to have something even remotely close to us. To be fair, you can also do a private showroom appointment, which is nicer anyways. |
Get Inspired: Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman Posted: 14 Jun 2010 11:36 AM PDT
Of course, cable sucked me in–and out of a lovely lull. Pretty Woman, one of my all-time favorite movies, was on. So I decided to commit to watching the entire thing. What I realized, as Vivian stomped divots at the polo match, was that I had inadvertently replicated her wardrobe in my own closet. Here’s what I found on my own hangers–and around the Internet. (Sadly, nothing modern comes even close to matching that red dress in beauty or style.) |

Breaking: Vanessa Bruno to Open Her First US Store in Los Angeles Posted: 14 Jun 2010 09:30 AM PDT
Right on the heels of Paul & Joe’s West Hollywood outpost, Vanessa Bruno will open her first US boutique in Los Angeles on July 26. The designer, whose soft, sexy clothes are favored by Lou Doillon types, will set up shop at 8448 Melrose Avenue, right near Marc Jacobs, A.P.C, Diane Von Furstenberg and our favorite L.A. boutique, Creatures of Comfort. The soft launch at the end of July will bring the designer to L.A. for the first time ever. There will be a grand opening at the end of October, post Fashion Month. The success of Isabel Marant’s New York store–as well as Sonia Rykiel’s push to expand in the US–highlights the importance of the contemporary French aesthetic to fashion-obsessed Americans. And as Bruno told Fashionista, “The clothes must speak for themselves.” We think her winter collection–from the boots to bags to woolly vests to lacy skirts–does just that. Click through for images from the look book–it’ll make you want to book a late summer plane ticket to L.A. |
