Roxy Teaches Me To Surf. Or, That Time I Wore A Full Body Wetsuit And Still Got Sunburned. Posted: 28 Jun 2010 04:45 PM PDT Surf’s influence on fashion has reached a peak this summer with Cynthia Rowley’s awesome collaboration for Roxy. Of course, Lisa Marie Fernandez had a jump start on using neoprene for more than just wetsuits, and Russh featured a smoking hot spread chock-full of neoprene in their January/February issue. So maybe that’s why Roxy decided to invite a bunch fashion editors out to Montauk this past weekend to learn how to surf. Because if anyone can rock a wetsuit in style, it’s New York fashion journos. Maybe? |
Gisele Bundchen is the Richest, Most Powerful Model in the World Posted: 28 Jun 2010 04:09 PM PDT Tati and Lindsey may be the models du jour, but Gisele Bundchen is still the one making bank. The supermodel mom earned $25 million last year, beating out Heidi Klum by $9 million and Kate Moss by $16 million. That’s according to Forbes, which released its annual list of the world’s most powerful celebrities today. To rank the celebs, the magazine factors in salary, web presence, social media presence, and press mentions, among other stuff. As for the next generation, who do you think will someday steal Gisele’s spot? We’re betting on Lara. (Just so you know: Forbes is my former employer.) |
Showstudio’s Latest Exhibit Features Terrence Koh, Marilyn Minter, and Lady Gaga Peeing Posted: 28 Jun 2010 03:33 PM PDT LONDON–Fashion photography legend and multimedia pioneer Nick Knight opened the doors to his London-based creative lair once again last weekend for Showstudio’s exhibition Inside/Out, a look at the use of abject imagery as a way of externalizing what goes on within us. Knight’s endless collaborations with stylists, artists, musicians and designers continues to tear at the barriers between fine art and fashion, the process and the consumer, this time throwing a piercing eye at the human experience. Curated with the help of London newcomer Carrie Scott, Inside/Out includes works by fellow visionaries and fashion frequenters Marilyn Minter, Terence Koh, Arianna Page Russell, and Alister Mackie, among others. On display were photos, video, and sculptural artifacts from Knight’s previous shoots including glass orb slippers, men’s lace lingerie and a urinal displayed on a windowsill, which Lady Gaga promptly put to use to the surprise of passersby, then thoughtfully signed before making her exit. A series of lace and silk lingerie that has been altered to accommodate a male physique hung next to photos by Amsterdam-based artist Arianna Page Russell bearing tattoo-like rashes, which she self-inflicts in patterns upon her abnormally sensitive skin. Fashion darling Terence Koh, aka “asianpunkboy,” known for addressing issues of mortality, contributed an inverted shelf, covered in his signature flat white paint, and complete with upside-down radio and death mask. Additional works included a blown-glass slipper with by artist Naomi Filmer, whose avant-garde accessories have graced the catwalks of Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan. The futuristic slipper was the ideal companion to the vertebrae shaped sleeve of silver cast by Shaun Leane. But what SHOWstudio does best is provide us thirsty throngs with the animated experience. Almost 20 years ago, Nick Knight built SHOWstudio as a platform that would bring fashion forward into the realm of film, a movement which is unmistakably in full swing as many designers opt out of pricey catwalk shows and into the art of filmmaking. In this sense, SHOWstudio provided the goods. In a basement screening room films by ‘puking’ Millie Brown, photographer Marilyn Minter and Dan Colen were looped. Minter, best known for her overblown series of wet-mouthed models, pressed against glass and lapping at pink caviar, served up the oral version of finger painting. Playing counterpart to Minter’s internal explorations was the outpouring of performance artist Millie Brown, whose commentary on the celebrity experience and maybe consumption itself involves her puking…on Lady Gaga. This was all under the direction of Vogue Homme Japan’s stylist Nicola Formichetti and shot by Nick Knight. The shoot “Elegant Mechanic” was shot at SHOWstudio and live-streamed to its audience. The urinal Gaga familiarized herself with earlier was one of the props. “Showstudio Shop aims to bring the props and sculptures created for the shoots and display them rather their collecting dust in a warehouse,” explained Curator Carrie Scott. “Nick feels that many of the objects created can stand up on their own in an art context, being that the people creating them are artists as well. We wanted to push the debate and see what happens.” Nothing like a little abject imagery to get the conversation started! Inside/Out proves to be as much about the human experience as it is about the people who create our images. The more places technology lets us look, further deeper smaller, the more the questions become what are we seeing and where the hell are we? The exhibition continues later in the month with artist Amy Dickie taking pages from magazines and cutting out the interior spaces around figures…so it seems the debate may have begun. **All photos by Sabrina Morrison. |

Lindsay Lohan’s Leggings Collection is Alive and Kicking Posted: 28 Jun 2010 01:43 PM PDT If you haven’t yet tuned into Bravo’s new reality series Double Exposure, you might want to tomorrow night. Tweetin’ fool Lindsay Lohan will guest star, all in an effort to promote her leggings collection 6126. The stars of Double Exposure, photogs Markus and Indrani, shot Lohan’s most recent marketing campaign for the label, which we are a little surprised still exists. The collection is currently available “exclusively” at Singer 22, a website that sells clothes celebrities wear. (We must admit, that’s a great business model for an e-commerce apparel retailer.) Click through to see more images from the look book. Believe us, it’s worth it: You’ll understand why this post was so snarky. |

Street Style Special Edition: Veuve Cliquot Polo Starring Hats and Prince Harry Posted: 28 Jun 2010 11:45 AM PDT Funny fact: T-Rex’s “Ride A White Swan” was the theme song at yesterday’s Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic on Governors Island. Maybe that’ll give you a sense of the day’s vibe. So, how was it? Well, of course the match was interesting, but the clothes–and the people–were the real reasons to be there. We took plenty of pictures to give you a sense of what went on–and maybe more importantly–what was worn. **All photos by Ashley Jahncke. |
Julie Haus Talks Resort 2011 and Her Collab With Anthropologie Posted: 28 Jun 2010 10:45 AM PDT Last week I stopped by Julie Haus’s showroom in the Garment District to check out her resort collection. While the line boasts the sweet feminine separates we’ve come to expect from Haus – breezy silk tops with zipper detailing and adorable pleat-front shorts – this collection’s got a bit of edge. Prints are bold, graphic and even psychadellic. Dresses are slouchy and painstakingly draped and pleated. Blazers are embellished with grommets and sprockets. “This is the first collection where we’re trying to focus on special pieces,” says Haus, which explains the high level of attention to detail. Exposed zippers are done in multicolor to match a print, every piece has zig-zag stitching, and loose draped dresses come with crocheted belts that can double as necklaces or doubled up as bracelets. One cocktail dress – a silver bubble-hemmed frock cut on the bias with a diagonal zipper – is so special that each one is cut and sewn by hand in the back of Haus’s showroom. (So that’s why that dress is $645..) Haus says she’s trying to push “beyond that sweeter feminine moment,” using her diffusion line, J/J by Julie Haus, as the place for more on-trend pieces and girlier frocks. If that’s the Haus you know and love, get psyched for August when J/J by Julie Haus teams up with Anthropologie. |
Liberty of London: Sold for £32 Million Posted: 28 Jun 2010 09:51 AM PDT Private equity firm BlueGem Capital has bought British company Liberty for £32 million, or $48 million (at the current exchange rate). The public company will now delist from the London Stock Exchange. Over the last few years, the famed retailer has aimed to re-invigorate a once-staid image with gazillions of fantastic collaborations, including those with Manolo Blahnik, Nike, and most prominently, Target. Over the last year, the company’s financial state has drastically improved. In 2009, it turned a profit, due to an increase in sales as well as the relinquishment of its flagship store in London for $56 million. (It’s now on a 56-year-lease issued by the buyers.) What’s BlueGem’s goal? Well, like any private equity firm, it’s to sell in a few years for double the money–hopefully more. It’s quite possible Liberty will delist for a few years and then hop back on the stock market. |

Rumor: MTV Has Canceled The City Posted: 28 Jun 2010 08:00 AM PDT Rumor has it that MTV has canceled (seemingly) successful scripted reality series The City. The current season, which airs on Tuesdays at 10.30pm EST, will be its last. The City, a spin-off of the The Hills, which was a spin-off of Laguna Beach, documents the “life” of Whitney Port, a young designer trying to make it in New York. It mostly takes place at real-life fashion industry companies, including Kelly Cutrone’s public relations firm People’s Revolution and Elle magazine, where main characters Erin Kaplan and Olivia Palermo “work.” (Kaplan does indeed work full time at Elle, Palermo does not.) In general, we’re a bit surprised by this news. The City seems genuinely popular, and even if it doesn’t pull in ratings equivalent to those of The Hills (which is also ending this season), it’s much buzzier. For a brand like MTV, it seems like it’d be worth sacrificing some ratings for press. But we guess that’s not the case in this circumstance. We’re also guessing that, Palermo, who has become a celebrity outside of her work on The City, is “over” the show, as is Whitney Port, who is very serious about her fashion career, even if the rest of the world isn’t. |
Hilary Alexander, Football (Er, Soccer) Commentator? Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:00 AM PDT Fashion and sports don’t often mix, but leave it to the World Cup to bring these two disparate worlds together. Louis Vuitton designed the carrying case for the World Cup Trophy. Dolce & Gabbana outfits the Italian national team. Soccer players are such lovely specimens that they often double as models (see David Beckham for Armani, Kaká for Armani, and Freddie Ljungberg for Calvin Klein to name a few). But the funniest instance of the worlds of fashion and football colliding happened yesterday, when the Daily Telegraph’s Hilary Alexander essentially live-twittered the England-Germany match. The Brit paper’s fashion director proved she is just as serious about football as she is about fashion. Well, almost. |
