Rachel Zoe to (Finally) Launch Fashion Label

Posted: 16 Jun 2010 07:00 AM PDT

After years of speculation, it’s all happening! WWD (subscription required) reports that Rachel Zoe–she of the catch phrases and maxi dresses –is launching her own apparel collection, which will be manufactured by mammoth firm Li and Fung.

The celebrity stylist already does an accessories and outwear collection for QVC, but this line will be a little more upscale. She’ll be selling to boutiques, as well as department stores like Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom. In fact, it seems like the line will be competing against former protege Nicole Richie’s collection, Winter Kate, for floor space.

Zoe told WWD that her signature looks–fake fur, Halston-inspired dresses–will be present. (However, she’s still in the midst of hiring a design team.)

The news comes just in time for August 3’s season three premiere of Bravo’s The Rachel Zoe Project.

Marc Jacobs Resort: Jackie O’ and Coco!

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 04:00 PM PDT

The entire Fashionista staff adored Marc Jacobs’ FW2010 collection, so it was exciting pop over to his Spring Street showroom today and check out what he’s done for Resort.

This a huge collection for Marc–particularly because he doesn’t do Pre-Fall. It’s in the stores longer than any either Fall or Spring, so there’s a lot of product for buyers to choose from.

Aside from the 38 looks you can click through here, essentially every piece comes in at least two or three colorways.

Most pieces were pastel, with some brights mixed in. It was all very ’60s–very Jackie O’, with hints of late-day Coco Chanel.

We loved the floral lace frocks, as well as the molded circle hems–carried over from the autumn collection. We also loved the prim, pointy flats and kitten heels. But most of all, we appreciated the abundance of polka dots! There were polka dots everywhere! On skirts, blouses, jackets and formal dresses.

And if Marc says it’s the season of the polka dot, it must be. He does know a thing or two about great clothes.

Adventures in Copyright: We Say “Tsk Tsk” to Miu Miu

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 03:00 PM PDT

An astute reader sent us a tip yesterday that really caught our attention.

Spring 2010 sparked a bit of Miu Miu mania, so it’s not surprising that many people have ripped off Ms. Prada’s fanciful collection.

However, back in the fall of 2008, Roberto Cavalli used a similar quirky print motif throughout his Just Cavalli show.

We know, we know. While Miuccia’s prints ran the gamut from cats to dogs to naked people, Roberto stuck to flamingos. Even though that aspect of the design differs, it’s evident that the navy and white color scheme and a number of the details are shockingly similar. If you look very closely, you can even see the flamingo cut-out on the collar of the Cavalli dress.

Could it be that instead of our usual scolding of others for stealing Miuccia’s ideas, we should be calling her out?

Ask Chris Benz: Should I Move To New York?

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 12:00 PM PDT

Hi Chris!

First of all I want to let you know how much I am inspired by your designs; your collections always amaze me.

I am a recent graduate of NYU where I majored in art history (but originally started out as a studio art major). I have always known that I wanted to be in fashion design, however I decided to go to traditional liberal arts school instead of Parsons, etc. It took me many internships to figure out that I wanted to be a shoe designer, and I just returned home from school in Milan.

I have been to New York a few times to interview and I thought I was close to having a job when someone offered to start me as a permanent freelancer, until after following up with her three times, I never got a reply back to confirm the details. I was a little discouraged and since returning back to California I need to figure out my next plans. I want to know if you think I should continue trying to reach out to this woman, or forget it and move on. I am also considering moving back out to New York to figure out my job situation, as it has been difficult being on the opposite coast.

I wanted to know if you think I should take the chance and move back out to NYC to pursue my passion, by meeting and talking to as many people as possible, or if I should wait it out in CA until I have a confirmed job.

Dear Shoe-laced -

Listen, if you want to work in NYC, you ought to find a way to allow opportunity to befall you… Make a plan, get back here, and just go for it!

One of the best things about New York is that you could eat and drink for free every night of the week, if you really put your mind to it!

Get out your calendar, set goal dates and objectives, and make something happen. The universe will help you when you're organized and commit to a direction. I always find things easier when there is a very strict plan and timeline because you can create small goals and achieve them.

If you love shoes and it's absolutely what you want to pursue, then there's no discussion, it's up to you to make it happen. Forget trying to follow up on a dead opportunity. I like to look forward and plan for the future. Create opportunity for yourself.

Someone once told me that when Mary J. Blige was having trouble getting her career off the ground, Chakka Kahn rang her up and said something like, Mary, you just have to get outta your own way!

We’ve Unearthed Yet Another Weird Blogger Bribe

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 11:00 AM PDT

You might remember a few months ago when we received correspondence from Ann Taylor LOFT, offering the chance to win a $500 gift card if we blogged about an event within 24-hours of its occurrence.

Ann Taylor apologized for the kerfuffle and made peace with the FTC. But it looks like some retailers didn’t learn from LOFT’s mistake.

A fellow blogger sent us this strange email from someone claiming to represent a very prominent fashion e-commerce site:

Hi,

I just received a new opportunity with REALLY GREAT E-COMMERCE SITE and wanted to see if you’re interested. We have a $100 instant gift card that we’d love to offer one of your readers.

This time, the assignment is to post about one of their designers (you can pick from Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Juicy Couture, Alice and Olivia, or Elizabeth and James) and include four specific links to REALLY GREAT E-COMMERCE SITE.

Branding Brand recently took over all blogger relationship management for REALLY GREAT E-COMMERCE SITE, and we will be coordinating numerous efforts moving forward for our top bloggers. If you’re interested, I would love to work with you on this.

Let me know!

****
=============================

$100 REALLY GREAT E-COMMERCE SITE GIFT CARD GIVEAWAY

Criteria
• Allow us to provide baseline copy and images. (We supply the html, but feel free to personalize it–this just makes it easy to meet all of REALLY GREAT E-COMMERCE SITE’s exact link requirements.)
• Include the words "REALLY GREAT E-COMMERCE SITE" and your designer’s name in the title of the post.
• Let the giveaway run for at least 10 days.
• Give the $100 gift card to a commenter of your choice.
Restrictions:
• No affiliate codes. (If you’re part of REALLY GREAT E-COMMERCE SITE’s affiliate program, you can’t get credit for this post.)
• No Pennsylvania bloggers. (International is fine. REALLY GREAT E-COMMERCE SITE offers free worldwide delivery in three days or less!)

To be clear: We get approached to run giveaways all the time–and we do run them occasionally–but we never use copy provided by the retailer. If we do use copy from a retailer, that means it’s an advertisement and marked as such.

There are plenty of great brands willing to offer reader giveaways with way fewer strings attached.

The weirdest part of this whole thing? That fact that bloggers based in Pennsylvania are not allowed to participate. We’re assuming that this has to do with the state’s specific laws.

Beth Ditto Loves Designer Cathy Pill: And You Will, Too

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 10:00 AM PDT

PARIS–Cathy Pill is the kind of woman who makes girls green with envy: Drop dead gorgeous (to the point of being mistaken for a model during her private views), she can also sew admirably, and walk in Eiffel-Tower-high heels. And to make matters worse, she is absolutely lovely.

The designer, an Antwerp export, gives the once over to Parisian women, as she mixes classical, Cacharel-like chic with daring detailing, bold colors and urban prints. She’s already designed pieces for Beth Ditto. This fall, her clothes will be sold at Browns in London, and Colette in Paris.

Today, Cathy confides in Fashionista about her upcoming collection, her teenage years and Sex and the City.

You mix a classical femininity and prints with graffiti, why?
I get inspired by my surroundings, by urban energy, by striking women, and my feelings at that point in time. All this is reflected in the colors and the lines. I enjoy capturing reality and transcribing it onto clothes.

Who is the Cathy Pill woman?
She is the urban woman, a curious, active, positive, forward-thinking one, a woman who dares to mix styles, who loves fashion and enjoys playing with it.

Can you tell us more about the collection that will soon be in shops?
The AW2010 collection is about the woman of today, walking in the street, captivating the energy around her. The collection reflects colorful rhythms mixing cashmere with street art, neoprene with gouache painted flowers, silk voiles with abstract marbleized aquarelle. Energy, sensuality, femininity and reality are the key words of the collections.

And can you reveal anything about the next collection?
It will be a fresh-colored strong collection. The prints are about spontaneous paintings, from impressionists and African art.

Lots of vibrant colours, including plains; Lots of cold mint, warm orange pink Coral, yellow, silver, ecru beige and grey.

Fabrics are silks, crêpe de chine, cottons, handwashed marbled cotonsilks, silk-cashmere knits, cotton knits, light jerseys….

When did you realize you when interested in fashion and what drew you to that world?
I've been playing with fashion ever since I'm a teenager. Clothes are the first creative tool of communication. Every morning, you wonder "what am I going to wear today in order to have the best possible day?"

I've worn every style imaginable, and felt there was something missing, until I decided to invest in a sewing machine, and to alter clothes my way, and to add color and print.

What did you wear when you were fifteen?
That depended on what I made, I'll leave this up to your imagination!

And if Cathy Pill was a film, an animal, a pair of shoes?
Alice in Wonderland meets Sex and the City, a migrating bird, a pair of Chloe shoes.

And if you had one superpower, which one would you choose?
To turn into a bird and to be free to travel as I wish.

Introducing Clark Sabat Couture

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 08:00 AM PDT

You may not be too familiar with the name Clark Sabat, but you’re certainly familiar with his label Friends With Benefits, created with stylist Lynn Levoy.

Sabat’s friends/fans include Sienna Miller and Olivia Palermo. Now, he’s taking his aesthetic from casually draped recycled cotton blouses to couture-quality dresses.

For the debut Clark Sabat collection, the designer used kangaroo, eel and python mixed with cottons and silk jersey to create intricately pleated and perfectly-draped pieces. Since each item will be made-to-measure, dresses start at $3,000, jackets at $3,500 and vests at $1,500. (Most pieces from Friends With Benefits, on the other hand, hover around $400.) Sabat will also create custom garments upon request.

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store for Spring 2011:

Let’s Go to the Mall!

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 07:00 AM PDT

I'm in Chicago this week and that means a lot of visits with family and friends….and a trip or two to the mall. Confession: I sometimes like shopping in malls. Don't get me wrong. Nothing beats New York for pure shopping adrenaline and magic. But New York shopping takes planning and stamina. A trip to the mall can be spontaneous.

Mall shopping naturally has its disadvantages. The variety of stores is disappointing–how many Gaps and Victoria's Secrets does any community need?

The exponential increase in e-commerce and availability of previously hard-to-find brands may eventually bring the death of the mall. For example, I just bought Pamela Love earrings and a Bodkin dress on sale from Bona Drag online. I could never walk into a mall and find these treasures.

However, malls offer some comforting advantages:
1) I still love the tactile experience of shopping, and of carrying an armload of clothes to try on.
2)There is the assurance that all the stores will be open until a designated time, unlike some boutiques, which can be unreliable.
3)You can browse online, and then go to the mall to try on what you like, thus removing the annoying delivery wait. Immediate gratification is a positive thing sometimes.

In the name of research, I went to a mall in suburban Chicago and found some things that may make a trip worth your while. Just stay away from the food court.
