Albert Ferretti at Pitti: Models, Muses, and Ornamentation Posted: 12 Jan 2011 06:30 AM PST
For those expecting something other than embellished dresses and ornate overcoats, there was sure to be disappointment. But who really wants newness from Ferretti? Not us. Her long lame bubble skirts, dresses trimmed in fur at the wrists and the hemline, and a felted wool princess coat with fur pleats were particularly fetching. As for the “real women” walking the runway? Belle looked stiff, Berenson emanated ease, and British socialite Poppy Delevigne appeared downright etheral. (Well, she did close the show–in a wedding dress, nonetheless.) We could have done without a flowing teal dress, which was a mix of velvet and lace. But all in all, it was a collection for Ferretti’s most devoted client–as well as those who may prefer to look, but not touch. Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. |

Sally Hansen Takes On Minx and Prabal Gurung And We Test Them Out Posted: 11 Jan 2011 02:37 PM PST Sally Hansen, the drugstore nail polish brand, is seriously upping its style cred this spring with two new products. First off, Prabal Gurung designed six Sally Hansen nail colors to complement the designs from his S/S 2011 show. Do you remember the turquoise and orange that came down the runway in his first few looks? Those colors are represented in three of the six colors: an orangey red, sky turquoise, and strawberry mango (called respectively Runway Red-y, Model Behavior, and Casting Call). The other three are neutrals–a metallic, a shimmer, and a pearl. On the runway, stylists used the nude shimmer, Without a Stitch, on models' nails then painted a thin line of Casting Call across the tips. The limited edition colors will be available this spring and will retail for $6.99 a bottle. If regular old nail polish is too boring for you, Sally Hansen is also launching Salon Effects nail polish strips this March. They're obviously supposed to be an at-home competitor to Minx, the $50 salon procedure beloved by Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. The strips come in 24 different patterns, ranging from plain neon colors to glitter metallics, to leopard and lace. They'll be available this March and will retail for $9.99 each. I tried them out and gave them to a few women from different demographics to try, too. Posted: 11 Jan 2011 01:42 PM PST Topshop's Sir Philip Green. J.Crew CEO Mickey Drexler. Theory honcho Andrew Rosen. Designer Kenneth Cole. HSN CEO Mindy Grossman. Put them in a room with 300 other top retail CEOs and execs and what do you get? The Financo Forum, held last night at the Harmonie Club. The event, organized annually by Financo (the top fashion/retail investment bank), is a hot ticket for industry insiders. The lively panel discussion and networking session gives attendees the rare chance to collectively review the state of the retail industry, to share insights and to socialize with their elite peers. The forum's focus this year was on all things digital. Although e-commerce and social media hardly seem to be new topics, they're something many retailers are still trying to learn more about. Financo Chairman Gilbert Harrison explained that the goal was to "help navigate the new world, and to ultimately drive sales and profits." The panel included Ben Fischman, CEO of Rue La La, Chip Wilson, Founder/Chief Innovation and Branding Officer of Lululemon Athletica, Stephen Zangre of Facebook and Dan Schock of Google, and was moderated by CNBC anchor Nicole Lapin. Posted: 11 Jan 2011 12:16 PM PST Jane Keltner deValle, the Fashion News Director at Teen Vogue, just tweetpic’d this photo of one of Rachel Zoe’s new pieces from her just-debuted Rachel Zoe Collection next to a page from Teen Vogue back in October 2007. In that feature, Zoe made over then-intern Elana Fishman (she’s now fashion credits editor at Marie Claire and a Fashionista contributor) into a “paparazzi darling.” Update: Thanks to our awesome readers (and commenter below) the dress has been identified. And we should have guessed, with Zoe, it would be vintage. The dress was from What Comes Around Goes Around. And reader Tita Vizcarra was kind enough to send in a photo of the credits. Mystery solved. Vintage inspired, of course. Elana also wrote in to tell us that Zoe called the dress in herself and liked it so much she bought it after the shoot. She’s also worn it on an episode of The Rachel Zoe Project so she must really really love this dress. Exclusive: Rachel Roy’s Spring Look Book is a Choreographed Dance, We Go Behind the Scenes Posted: 11 Jan 2011 11:26 AM PST When most designers put together a look book they hire a model and photograph that same model styled in their looks for that season. Not Rachel Roy. Roy has always used real women-not professional models-for her Rachel Rachel Roy look books, but this season, in keeping with the dance trend brought to a head by Black Swan, Roy has hired professional dancers and a choreographer to dance her spring collection for her diffusion line, Rachel Rachel Roy. “Using dancers for the spring look book was an inspiring and powerful way to showcase young people pushing themselves through art,” said Roy. It’s no surprise Roy is open to unconventional sources of inspiration in fashion–she’s set to launch a line with New York Knick (and Vogue-darling) Amar’e Stoudemire sometime soon. So a couple weeks ago I stopped by the Jermaine Browne dance studio tucked away in the Garment District to watch the choreography/casting in progress. Nine dancers were selected to model/dance 14 looks from Roy’s spring Rachel Rachel Roy collection. Sources “close to" Beckham dished that she is getting her collection ready for London Fashion Week. But a British Fashion Week spokesperson told Vogue UK: "Victoria is not showing in London this season." Who to believe? {VogueUK} Now Your Nails Can Look, Er, Glee-morous: Sephora by OPI will be launching a limited edition set of nail colors inspired by Glee. Watch Baptiste Giabiconi Play a Mannequin in Karl Lagerfeld’s Creepy New Short for Chanel Posted: 11 Jan 2011 08:51 AM PST We liked Giabiconi better in his awesomely bad music video “Showtime” (yay, another excuse to watch it again–"Whass wrong wees you, man!?") then here, where he plays a mannequin in Karl Lagerfeld‘s latest short for Chanel called “Window World.” The video also stars Magdalena Frackowiak and Barbara Dvorakova as mannequins in a room full of mannequins. Mannequins + real models playing mannequins + score that makes it sound as if someone is about to get stabbed = creepy. We much prefer Kim Cattrall and James Spader in Mannequin. Behold: Leighton Meester for Missoni Posted: 11 Jan 2011 07:51 AM PST Missoni has released their spring campaign on Vogue Italia‘s website, including the all important image of Leighton Meester. Meester’s not the solo star of the campaign, which features a large group of creative types and acquaintances of the Missoni family. Socialites, artists, and royalty, including Eugenie Niarchos, Lissy von Thurn und Taxis, Tatiana Santo Domingo and Jaquetta Wheeler all make cameos in Missoni’s spring campaign, which Angela Missoni said was inspired by the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. While Meester‘s Gossip Girl co-star Blake Lively’s Chanel campaign is likely to make more of a splash, Meester looks perfectly adorable in Missoni. Click through to check out the rest of Missoni’s charmingly busy, quirky and cluttered spring campaign. How refreshing to see a campaign where everyone looks like they’re having a blast.
