Prada to Go Public on the Hong Kong Stock Market

Posted: 27 Jan 2011 06:46 AM PST

After years of mulling an initial public offering, Prada‘s board of directors has approved of the company’s intentions to be listed on the Hong Kong Bourse.

Prada’s currently making about 2 billion Euros a year in sales, and investors are betting that the company is worth at least 6 billion Euros. The stock market debut could happen as early as July.

So why is Prada going public, and why is the company going public in Hong Kong instead of Europe, where it’s based?

Show Us Some Love: Vote For Us at the Bloglovin’ Awards

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 03:07 PM PST

We’re honored to have been nominated for a Bloglovin’ award as one of the best fashion news blogs–especially since we are up against such good company (our friends at The Cut, Refinery29, WhoWhatWear and Fashionologie also got the nod). We know we’re far from perfect but we work real hard and love you, dear readers, so much, so we’re hoping you’ll show us some love back and vote for us here. Look, it’s like our very own awkward awards speech only we haven’t won anything and we’re a blog not an actress.

Jean Paul Gaultier Gets His First Museum Retrospective

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 02:35 PM PST

Just as Jean Paul Gaultier closed his spring haute couture collection with a mad can-can down the runway by Crazy Horse performer, “Psykko Tycco,” showing a collection inspired by Brit punk and French can-can, comes word that the designer will be getting his first museum retrospective. It’s about time.

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk will launch at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) on June 17 and will live there through October 2. The retrospective marks the 35th anniversary of Gaultier‘s label–he showed his first ready to wear collection in 1976 and founded his own couture house in 1997. The exhibition will feature around 120 looks, drawn, for the most part, form Gaultier’s couture collections though there will also be ensembles from ready to wear. Sketches, photographs, stage costumes, film excerpts from runway shows, concerts and dance performances, will all be included.

Would You Rather…? The Androgynous Kiss Edition

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 01:30 PM PST

Fashion has always been sex-centric, but now it really seems like lip-locking is en vogue. From Love‘s issue five cover to Jean Paul Gaultier’s SS11 ad, models just can’t keep their hands off each other. Kissing isn’t just for boys and girls either, Kate Moss kisses transgender model Lea T. on the Love cover while Karolina Kurkova kisses her feminine male look-alike, model Andrej Pejic. Whose kissing technique is better: Kate and Lea’s or Karolina and Andrej’s?

Jewelry Label Rachel Leigh is Hiring a Director of Online Experience

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 01:23 PM PST

Since launching in the fall of 2004, Rachel Leigh, the former Yves Saint Laurent publicist's eponymous line of jewelry has expanded to include distribution in over 500 stores worldwide and features in countless top fashion publications.

Presenting three collections annually, Rachel Leigh produces vintage-inspired pieces that are characteristically timeless while still incorporating the dominant trends to walk to the runway. In an era of fast-fashion and disposable consumption, Rachel Leigh's approach is keepsake-meets-contemporary. The focus is to create statement jewelry that women aren't afraid to wear – intrigue through design while avoiding intimidation. This is the charm of costume jewelry – not necessarily that you throw it away after one season because you didn't pay a fine-jewelry price tag, but that you are able to appreciate the fine details, invest in multiple pieces, and save them for years to come.

Rachel Leigh is now looking to hire an incredibly talented person to help build a larger online presence to better engage customers and create amazing experiences with the brand.

Label to Watch: Yeojin Bae

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 01:00 PM PST

LOS ANGELES–Australian fashion is synonymous with bright palettes and beach-ready styles. But Yeojin Bae is breaking the mold with her namesake line of tailored separates, dresses and tops. A tightly edited, sleek collection that is often situated alongside such names as Vanessa Bruno and Stella McCartney, Bae’s line has been around for just four years. But, she’s coming into her own this season with slick metallic suits, as well as elegant dresses and separates that play with both silhouette (including some cut-outs) and form. We caught up with Bae last week at a trunk show, where she was showcasing her wares for spring. With an e-shop freshly launched and her first solo fashion show taking place in Sydney next fashion week, Bae is assuredly a star on the rise. We talked to her about her favorite LA spots and the ever-changing Australian fashion landscape.

What brought you to LA this week?

Mrs. O Plays it Safe at the SOTU: Since the fallout from Michelle Obama’s McQueen dress that she wore to the state dinner won’t quit, she played it safe in a putty colored Rachel Roy sheath at the State of the Union last night. {Mrs.O}

Miuccia Prada Would Never Do Fast Fashion: More from Miuccia Prada’s extensive interview with WWD, “I have never even considered [fast fashion] and I've explained why. It's because I don't like the idea of a bad copy of what one does for the main brand. If I had an ingenious idea to do fashion that costs less but that wasn't a bad copy of something else, with completely different criteria and ways of doing things, I would do it. Also for myself, it would be an ingenious idea. For now, what I see more or less is the bad copy. Also with clothes that cost little, you need to ask why they cost so little. Because no one ever asks themselves that.” {WWD subscription required}

Textbook for Fashionista: Lauren Santo Domingo

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 11:12 AM PST

Fans of the Tumblr blog Textbook, take note: Fashionista has teamed up with the blog’s mastermind, John Jannuzzi, to create storyboards for our industry’s style stars. (See an archive of his work for us here.)

Somewhere in a palatial and artfully furnished Flatiron loft is Lauren Santo Domingo, a favorite of the fashion world. Aside from being snapped by street style photogs and paparazzi alike, her apartment has been photographed by Vogue, where she’s a contributing editor–inspiring real estate envy and showcasing her unique eye. I mean, how could anybody not admire a woman who has a hippo statue that transforms into a full bar AND a Lego statue of her beloved bulldog, Georgie. Not to mention her username on Twitter is @TheLSD, which is pretty genius.

1. Taking Georgie for a walk.
Coat by Burberry Prorsum, dress by Bottega Veneta, shoes by YSL

2. Going someplace awesome.
Dress by Ralph Lauren, shoes by Oscar de la Renta

3. Pit stop at Momofuku Milk Bar.
Dress by Alexis Mabille, shoes by Nina Ricci

Enjoyed this? Tweet us a suggestion for next week or leave one in the comments below.

About The Writer
John Jannuzzi began styling figures from history and literature on his blog Textbook in September 2009. He studied at Muhlenberg College and Parsons, The New School for Design and currently works and lives in New York. He tweets like a crazy person.

Last Night’s Party: LOFT Takes Us to the Beach

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 10:00 AM PST

Last night Ann Taylor proved once again that their LOFT brand is dedicated to a new hip and youthful image. In a studio at Chelsea Piers, guests sipped on cocktails as Mia Moretti, one of New York's hottest DJs, played Kanye West's "Christian Dior Denim Flow," from her perch above the crowd. Candles flickered from the floor, giving the room an exotic summer evening vibe that was complemented by potted palm trees, cabanas sprinkled with swimsuits and sandals, and of course mannequins decked out in LOFT's vibrant Summer 2011 collection.
