Posted: 17 Jan 2011 01:50 PM PST I spent last week in Florence, Italy covering Pitti Uomo and Pitti W, the men’s and women’s trade shows known best for translating high-fashion trends to retail. You won’t find middle-of-the-road brands at this event: Each label is either steeped in tradition, or starting a revolution in its specific category. (Whether that’s men’s brogues, outerwear, bow ties, or hats.) When I wasn’t scurrying off to press previews, runway shows, or, um, blogging, I was floating from booth to booth, checking out what the vendors had on offer. Here’s a bit of what I saw. (Tomorrow, I’ll reveal my new street style icon, who I found at the fair.) Kate Moss and Lea T. Lock Lips on LOVE’s Issue 5 Cover Posted: 17 Jan 2011 12:45 PM PST Today was a good day for all of you LOVE-aholics out there; Katie Grand and Co. just released a teensy image of the first cover of the fifth issue, a black and white photo of Lea T. and a Burberry-bedecked Kate Moss, shot by Mert & Marcus with the headline “This is Hardcore.” If you are even half as excited as I am about LOVE’s newest issue, the cover is just the fix to have you up at night guessing at what kind of goodies will be inside. As if that wasn’t enough to make my countdown to February 7 all the more suspenseful, the LOVE website has been completely made-over with the Lea T. and Kate cover as the background and a short movie previewing the contents on the issue. From the images in the video, I think this issue of LOVE is going to be just as jaw-dropping as the rest. Now how long until the Bieber cover is released… ? Posted: 17 Jan 2011 11:00 AM PST Gaga Returns the Favor: Nicola Formichetti, Lady Gaga’s stylist, has tapped the popstar to create an original soundtrack for his upcoming menswear show at Thierry Mugler, where he is now the creative director. {WWD} Is it Oldfield? Is Diana-favorite Bruce Oldfield designing Kate Middleton‘s wedding dress? Who knows, but royal snitches do say that she’s made a decision as to whom will be creating the most-anticipated dress of the century. {The Daily Mail} Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Exclusive: American Apparel’s Newest Ad Features No Pubes; Features Nobody At All Posted: 17 Jan 2011 10:29 AM PST Based on the ads we’ve seen from American Apparel in the new year, it seemed it was fair to say the struggling hipster retailer was returning to its racy roots–each new ad more shocking and porn-y than the previous one. To wit: pantless models climbing trees, topless models painting their nails or riding a horse (like the one at right), and one model whose pubic hair shows through her white lace panties that got everyone else’s panties in a bunch. The ads are unquestionably provocative and we questioned whether the near-bankrupt retailer was returning to their ’70s porn-esque advertising roots after a streak of more benign and conservative ads–including illustrated ones and one featuring founder Dov Charney working on his laptop–in an effort to drive up sales. But a new ad set to run in an upcoming issue of VICE flies in the face of that theory. It features, well, no one. No partially nude barely legal college student, no Dov Charney, no one. Check it out. Posted: 17 Jan 2011 09:22 AM PST Mark Townsend has styled the locks of Maggie Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, the Olsens, January Jones, Jessica Biel, and Cate Blanchett, to name just a few. So he knows red carpet hair. Last night for the Golden Globes he styled Lea Michele (Glee) and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone). I spoke to him shortly after his ladies walked the red carpet in an attempt to pry some secrets out of him. Golden Globes 2011: We Actually Liked a Lot of the Dresses Posted: 17 Jan 2011 07:30 AM PST Carey Mulligan has changed red carpet fashion. I say this on the day after the Golden Globes not because she wowed me last night–she wasn’t even there. It’s because ever since Mulligan wore that Prada dress to last year’s Oscars, the red carpet has gotten a bit more interesting. Of course there were risk takers before she the pulled it off: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, and Sofia Coppola have looked pulled together and cool over the past decade. But here’s why Carey’s different: She’s not cool. She’s pretty and smart and admirable, but she’s not particularly slick or hip. She’s made not wearing a nude, sparkly dress okay for non-hipsters. She’s even made it necessary. Last night, there were more than ten dresses which I thought, even if they weren’t perfect, were good. And interesting. Usually, I’d say the number is more like three.
