Calypso St. Barth for Target; Prabal to Follow? Posted: 05 Jan 2011 07:29 AM PST InStyle.com reports that Calypso St. Barth is the next brand to collaborate with Target. The beachy label, favored among preppy and boho girls alike, will produce a summer collection for the big box retailer, priced from $1.99 to $79.99. The range will include clothing and accessories for women and children, plus candles, pillows and glassware. While there are no images available yet, we’re pretty sure there will be a version of Calypso’s famed Loreal dress in the mix. The crinkled silk dress was so popular amongst a certain set a few summers ago, you couldn’t step a foot inside the West Village without spotting one. Expect some bridesmaid-worthy pieces, too, as those are a big part of the label’s business. Posted: 05 Jan 2011 06:57 AM PST Rumors swirled last month that Blake Lively was in Paris shooting a handbag campaign for Chanel and now it’s official: the Gossip Girl star is confirmed as the face of Chanel’s new Mademoiselle handbag line, WWD is reporting. Lively was shot by the Kaiser himself for the campaign, which is set to run in April glossies. Lagerfeld photographed Lively at Chanel’s famous headquarters on the Rue Cambon on that iconic mirrored staircase. Lively, 23, has made her love for the brand known–she’s walked many a red carpet in Chanel, was a front row presence at Chanel’s AW 2010-2011 couture shows last July, and made an appearance at the opening of Chanel’s SoHo store in September. Apparently the feeling is mutual. We were clued in to Chanel’s interest in Lively when Anna Wintour, in her editor’s letter in the December issue of American Vogue, made a reference to Karl “scouting” Lively. And now the Kaiser is expressing his unabashed adoration for the starlet. "She's a kind of American dream girl…I think she will become a great actress," Lagerfeld told WWD, also noting that he thought Lively’s name was an apt descriptor for the actress who is “full of life.” Full of life indeed. Lagerfeld’s enthusiasm for Lively is no match for her excitement for the brand. Just as she teared up over her love for Louboutin, Lively seems sincere in her undying love for Chanel. Strip: Ministry of Waxing Wants To Revolutionize Your Bikini Line Posted: 04 Jan 2011 10:45 AM PST Cynthia Chua, the founder of Strip: Ministry of Waxing (and a long-time beauty entrepreneur and owner of a chain of spas), studied the art of the Brazilian bikini wax in New York and almost single handedly introduced its, uh, pleasures to Asia. Cynthia's native Singapore was the first eastern spot to embrace the ritual of hot wax on one's most sensitive regions, and the trend quickly spread. There are now almost 30 Strip locations throughout Asia and London. Executing a complete 360 degree journey, the student has now become the master. In a (hairless) ballsy move, Strip recently opened an outpost in New York, with eyes on the West Coast soon. It’s challenging the waxing establishment by offering less painful, cleaner, and quicker waxing services. So how do they compare? I went in to find out. Tavi Gevinson Is Skeptical About Celeb Designers But Fawns Over Gwen Stefani Anyway in Teen Vogue Posted: 04 Jan 2011 09:42 AM PST Tavi Gevinson interviews Gwen Stefani in February’s Teen Vogue. It’s her first bylined piece for the teen mag, and she begins by expressing her skepticism for celebrities who design clothes:
But by the end of her piece, after a fun girly photo shoot together in which Stefani goofs around with Gevinson and makes sarcastic jokes about how awkward it is to pose for photos, Gevinson is clearly on team Stefani. Her skepticism gone, she writes,
Nevermind that that last sentence seems a little jumbled (“her designs not derive” say wha?). All this makes sense, of course. Gevinson wouldn’t have a piece in Teen Vogue if she ended up slamming L.A.M.B. Fashion mags aren’t exactly the place for hard-hitting journalism or even criticism. It’s a cute piece, too, and offers readers a more personal and unfiltered look at Stefani in just a few hundred words. But here’s the thing: Gevinson has announced plans to start a magazine (Sassy part deux) with Jane Pratt, presumably to offer something glossy teen fashion mags are not currently offering. Mags like, well, Teen Vogue. Gevinson has said she loves Sassy because “It called out celebrities and politicians for being assholes, educated its readers on politics without sounding biased, and focused on fashion in a way that was unconventional. It was lipstick feminism for teenage girls, covering sexist issues but not discouraging having fun with makeup or caring about boys. It included R.E.M. records as opposed to the perfume scents of today’s teen magazine pages.” Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
