Banana Republic’s Summer Dress Collection Will Complete Your Warm Weather Wardrobe Posted: 29 Jan 2011 06:43 AM PST If you’re like me, one of the best parts of going on vacation is buying clothes to wear on said vacation. I’m off to Spain and Morocco in April, thus currently on the hunt for long, flowing dresses that are comfortable and of course pretty. Luckily for those of us near a Banana Republic (aka everyone), creative director Simon Kneen‘s summer dress collection delivers. Whether or not you’re about to embark on an epic holiday, there’s a dress in here for you. In fact, there are over 70 styles to choose from, ranging from Saturday morning casual to black tie appropriate. And of course, the price is nothing to balk at: from $69.50 to $298, you can probably afford to buy more than one. Click through to check out our top looks from the collection, which debuted last week at Indochine in New York. **Photos courtesy of the Billy Farrell Agency. Best Dressed: Kirsten and Diane in Chanel, Jessica and Olivia in Gucci, and More Posted: 29 Jan 2011 06:04 AM PST This week it was all about legendary European brands. Kirsten Dunst looked perfectly lady like at the Chanel couture show, while Diane Kruger stunned in Chanel couture a few days later. Jessica Alba went sexy in Gucci, as did Olivia Wilde. And of course Kate Bosworth looked no less than perfect in this leather Chloe dress, worn at Sundance. Amanda Brooks is the New Fashion Director of Barneys New York Posted: 28 Jan 2011 02:02 PM PST After months of speculation, Amanda Brooks has been hired as the new fashion director of Barneys New York. "I have long admired Amanda and her effortless blend of luxury and individual style. Her unique perspective on fashion mirrors what Barneys represents and we feel very fortunate to have her join the team," said Daniella Vitale, the company’s new chief merchandiser, in a statement. She begins February 7, just in time to sit front row at New York Fashion Week. While much of our generation knows Brooks as more of a socialite and personal style icon, penning the guide I Love Your Style in 2009, she also has plenty of legit fashion cred. Her most recent position was director of fashion at William Morris, where she worked with Chanel, Tod’s, and American Express on marketing, advertising, and image building. As an independent consultant, she worked with DvF, Tory Burch, and Roger Vivier. She was also at one point the creative director of Hogan, as well as Tuleh. She has also written for top notch publications, such as Vogue and The New York Times. We’ve always thought of Brooks as more of a Bergdorf girl, so it’ll be interesting to see how she adapts her uptown sensibility to the decidedly downtown Barneys brand. Bally Hosts Spring Preview For a Good Cause Posted: 28 Jan 2011 01:41 PM PST Swiss luxury house Bally has partnered with DKMS, the world’s largest bone marrow donor center, in the fight against Leukemia. Last night, the brand hosted an exclusive preview of their sporty Spring 2011 collection, along with DKMS Americas co-founder Katharina Harf, in the Madison Avenue Bally boutique. Guests were invited to shop the collection of leather trimmed canvas totes, color blocked wedges, and an array of leather goods for men. The particularly nice part? A hefty 20% of the evening’s sales was donated to DKMS to help recruit bone marrow donors for Leukemia patients. DJ Mia Moretti and violinist Caitlin Moe entertained the chic crowd with remixes of Robyn, MGMT, and Yelle dance tracks as models clad in minimalist, floor length dresses from the line floated about the space. Not a bad way to spend a Thursday evening. Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The-Coveted v. TheCoveted: Lawyers Weigh-In on the Blog War Posted: 28 Jan 2011 01:13 PM PST You’ve undoubtedly heard of TheCoveted.com, a darling new website that gives us a peek inside the homes and wardrobes of fashion industry favorites. You’ve also probably heard about the little war raging between this new site and Jeanine Jacob, founder of Independent Fashion Bloggers, as well as her very own blog, The-Coveted.com. Both sites, thus, are called The Coveted, and Internet commenters have had a field day trashing the “new” Coveted and defending the “old” Coveted. And rightly so. While it’s true that the sites are very different in style and audience, there’s just no way The Coveted founders Erin Kleinberg and Stephanie Mark didn’t know The-Coveted existed before they launched their site. Sure, they might not be subscribing to Jacob’s site on their RSS feeds, but for someone to launch a website/blog and not even Google the name to make sure nothing else was named similarly seems pretty absurd. But that’s exactly what Kleinberg and Mark are claiming. In fact, in a letter to Jeanine Jacob’s lawyer responding to a request that TheCoveted.com cease using that domain (you can read it here), the duo’s lawyer says that they were “unaware of your clients’ website” and that if Jacob doesn’t leave them alone, they’re going to sue her. This all seems a bit insane to us, but we decided to consult a couple of lawyers to make sure we weren’t missing an inextricable point. The conclusion: While in bad form, TheCoveted.com probably didn’t do anything illegal by using that domain. However, Jacob does have a case–even if it’s a weak one. Posted: 28 Jan 2011 12:23 PM PST Don’t Hate On Us Franca: In her, ahem, blog de direttore, Vogue Italia EIC Franca Sozzani unleashes about her disdain for fashion bloggers. Here’s a sampling: “Do we need all these bloggers? They don’t offer an opinion but only talk about themselves, take their own pictures wearing absurd outfits. What’s the point?” and “These aren’t people who have been working in fashion too long to end up criticizing everything, the shows, and they don’t have a background in fashion so they are not conditioned by their knowledge or interests. There [sic] comments are naif [sic] and enthusiastic. They don’t hold a real importance in the business. Of course not.” Ouch. This kind of blanket smack down seems more than a little unjust. {Refinery29} Cathy Horyn on the Michelle Obama “Witch Hunt”: We thought it was kinda tssk-tssk-y for the CFDA and ODLR and WWD to shame Michelle Obama for wearing a foreign designer to the China state dinner. So did Cathy Horyn. And she’s got some very valid points: “I'm afraid the C.F.D.A., while wanting to act like a family, really represents individuals with very different interests. The truth is many of its members, including its president, Diane Von Furstenberg, manufacture a significant portion of their clothes outside the United States, mainly in Asia. Why wasn't that mentioned in the WWD articles?” She also voices concern that Mrs. O will be known only for her dresses and not her brains and the good work she’s been doing as FLOTUS. Preach, Horyn! Only why back down from the original title of your post? Horyn originally titled her post “Witch Hunt” and now it’s headlined “About that McQueen Dress.” {On the Runway} Baptiste on Karl: Karl Lagerfeld’s muse Baptiste Giabiconi covers Dansk magazine (who did that to him!?) and opens up on his relationship with the Kaiser: "One day I went up to Karl and said: 'Why me? What is it you see in me? Why do you only work with me?' And he told me it's because he sees something in me that he doesn't see in other people, something in the way I carry myself. Karl said: 'I see both a man and a woman in you at the same time.'" {Models.com} Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Hilary Rhoda to Women: Are More Editorials in Store for the Super? Posted: 28 Jan 2011 11:54 AM PST We’re always curious as to why we don’t see Hilary Rhoda in more magazines. Maybe it’s because she’s so rich that she doesn’t have to do editorials? Maybe it’s because she doesn’t like doing them? Maybe it’s because her All-American looks don’t work in high fashion? Yes, we realize that final suggestion is preposterous. But Rhoda’s card for her new New York agency, Women, is more directional than anything we’ve seen her do recently. And that’s not saying much. We’re wondering if the move from IMG–best known for repping commercial models like Tyra Banks–means that Ms. Estee Lauder is looking to book some Love editorials. Look Book: Acne’s Pre-Fall Collection Doesn’t Dissapoint Posted: 28 Jan 2011 11:00 AM PST Jonny Johansson’s Pre-Fall collection for Acne was influenced by the women of Lismore Castle, a private Irish estate with past residents including Lady Charlotte Boyle and Adele Astaire, sister of Fred. “It inspired me to do something incredibly classic that I have never done before,” said the designer. The result is a mix of mid-century silhouettes: midi skirts, shift dresses, pleated kilts, and mohair sweaters. We like. Valentino Haute Couture Spring 2011: Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli Hit Their Stride Posted: 28 Jan 2011 10:33 AM PST **Fashionista contributor Long Nguyen is the co-founder/style director of Flaunt. PARIS–It was almost two years ago to the day that Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli took over as designers for Valentino and presented their first couture show in the sumptuous hall at the Sorbonne with the full support of its founder. In their past couture collections, the duo has tried to insert their own ideas while still maintaining the essentials of the Roman house, often resulting in confused collections. How much tradition to respect and how much to let go? But the haute couture collection Chiuri and Piccioli presented Wednesday evening at the Rothschild Hotel proved that they have now started to speak on their own terms and showed just how far they have come since their debut couture collection for Valentino. The collection begged the question: who is the women who wears Valentino couture? I keep thinking that the woman who would wear that sheer dress with the butterfly bow is one that would pose nude with just the bow for a Helmut Newton portrait. And these confident and sexual women have plenty to choose from in a collection comprised of soft, light clothes in longer silhouettes–a layered organza dress in camel with a ruffled neck, a double crepe dress in ivory, or a sheer black organza dress with embroidered organza flowers.
