Fabio Quaranta at Pitti Uomo: The Hallucinatory Mountain

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 06:00 AM PST

FLORENCE–The coolest thing about Pitti–thus far, at least–is that every designer staging a runway show has hosted a press preview a few hours before their models start stomping. Not only is it nice to get a sneak peek at what’s to come, but it’s particularly useful to be able to chat with the designer beforehand–aiming for a backstage interview after the event is never fun, so this gives journos a chance to ask real questions in a less stressful situation.

Roman designer Fabio Quaranta opened the Cango Cantieri Goldonetta to us yesterday afternoon.

Gemma Arterton is the New Face of G-Star

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 05:00 AM PST

Gemma Arterton, the British actress who has landed on our best dressed list more than once, is replacing Liv Tyler as the face of denim label G-Star.

Shot by Anton Corbijn, the global campaign features Arterton in plenty of denim with her hair pulled off of her face by a retro-style bandana. We’re impressed with G-Star’s choice. When the label first brought on Liv Tyler, some wondered if this was just another brand aiming to cash in on a celebrity endorsement. Sure, the fame these ladies possess helps sell the product, but it’s obvious that G-Star aims for a particular kind of muse: a sort of modern Snow White. Tyler and Arterton are both fair with dark hair and voluptuous features from lips to hips. That’s a celebrity spokesperson we can get behind.

The campaign hits in mid-February.

The spring ad campaigns keep pouring in, and in this behind-the-scenes video, we get to see how Ferragamo‘s seductively luxe campaign was made. Photographed by Mikael Jansson, models Daria Werbowy and Clement Chabernaud star as a fabulously wealthy–not to mention gorgeous–jet setting couple lounging lazily poolside in some very warm place. On this snowy day, we want to go to there. Watch and be transported.

New iPhone App Pose Allows You To Shop With All Your Friends, All The Time

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 01:11 PM PST

Ever wish you had your best girlfriends around every time you went shopping so you could get their feedback before you made a purchase you might later regret? Enter Pose, a new free iPhone (and soon Android) photo-based fashion-sharing app, which debuted yesterday. The premise is that you snap pictures of pieces you find while shopping, then share them with your network which includes folks using the app, Facebook, or Twitter. Or don't share your finds at all, and just use the pics as an archive of things you lust after.

When you do share a find with friends, or "friends" as the case may be, a unique page is created at Pose.com for that item. Friends can then comment and give feedback on the item in question. You get instant notifications when anyone comments.

Pose is a bit more selective and sophisticated than other fashion-sharing sites, like Fashism, where any random person can say "I like it" or "I hate it" and leave comments. It's a more controlled way for the user to distribute content and elicit opinion.

There are a few different streams within the app: your own, everyone else, the most popular, and a category called Posers. Posers are handpicked by Pose and are either very stylish, very good shoppers, or both. Current Posers include Norma Kamali, Natalie Joos, Leandra Medine (Man Repeller), and yes, our very own Lauren Sherman.

While it's unclear how Pose is going to work as a business, they'll likely look towards models like Foursquare, where retailers can message users directly.

One issue?

Rachel McAdams Mixes Suno, Big Hair, Yellow Eyeliner and Side Boob At The London Premiere of Morning Glory

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 12:00 PM PST

Rachel McAdams walked the red carpet for the London premiere of "Morning Glory" yesterday. While the movie was meh, her sartorial choices for this event were anything but.

She's taking a bit of a beating in the press today, which is typical for any actress who chooses a dress that is the slightest bit fashion-y and not made by Marchesa. However, while I always applaud risk taking and originality, did Rachel get in over her too-teased head this time?

The Dress: It's a Suno S/S 2011 dress originally shown with a shirt underneath–a much more casual look. Rachel chose (or was convinced by her stylist) to wear it without the shirt. The proportion of the thin strips of fabric in the front compared to the fuller skirt just seems off and is reminding me a bit of the Borat mankini. But she looks completely comfortable and I'm certain that there was no danger of a wardrobe malfunction.

The Shoes: Purple satin Charlotte Olympia. Too heavy for the dress or a good contrast?

Textbook for Fashionista: Daphne Guinness!

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 11:00 AM PST

Fans of the Tumblr blog Textbook, take note: Fashionista has teamed up with the blog’s mastermind, John Jannuzzi, to create storyboards for our industry’s style stars (last week he took on Elle‘s Kate Lanphear).

Many people look at fashion as a form of self-expression. And who could blame them? Your wardrobe is just another extension of your personality, which is one of the greatest things about clothing. Considering that, is there anybody in the world with more personality than Daphne Guinness?

Seriously, she sports silhouettes that most mortals wouldn’t dare dream of and seems as if she’s always just walked off a runway. That’s why we love her–she’s comfortable in her skin and fearless in her wardrobe no matter the occasion. Of course, with a history like hers that includes a delicious beer, Andy Warhol and a storied lineage, it’s no wonder she has the fashion world hanging on her every word. Give it up for Daphne. And the next time you see somebody whose outfit is just a bit over the top, remember that their just channeling Ms. Guinness. Be daring kids, be daring.

Making the Most Out of Your Weekend: Invest in Saturday

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 09:00 AM PST

Columbia Business School logo

If you thought an MBA from Columbia was only a possibility for mid-twenty-somethings in finance with two years to spare, think again. Columbia's new EMBA program is offered on Saturdays only, which means you don't have to upend your life or break the momentum of a career you've put time and effort into to attain it. It's the kind of degree that would get you that much closer to your dream job, or at least provide the network to ensure you find it.

It's a program tailor made for busy New Yorkers (perhaps a redundancy) whose careers are just as important as their home life. All it takes to get to that next level is one day a week: Saturday. A day when, let's face it, you might otherwise be shopping or going out to eat or catching up on DVR'ed television. (OK, so this is what we do on Saturdays.) Think of each Saturday (the program lasts for 24 months) as an investment in yourself, your career, or even your family.

And of course, lazy Sunday is still free for sleeping late, lingering brunches, and recharging for the coming work week.

It's all about keeping your balance in New York. And in the city that never seems to stop working, where we commute from home to work to meetings back to home, blackberry in hand, looking up every so often to avoid getting taken down by a cab, it's an important thing to maintain. Celebrity Campaign Reveals: Katie Holmes for Ann Taylor, Rumer Willis For Badgley Mischka, and Natalie Portman Topless for Miss Dior Cherie

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 08:50 AM PST

Ann Taylor continues their revamp efforts (ok, sometimes we’ve called it their J.Crew-ification) with today’s announcement that Katie Holmes will be the new face of the workwear brand, WWD is reporting. The campaign will break in March magazines.

Holmes is a good fit to replace Heidi Klum: she’s a 32-year-old working mom whose style has settled into a place that’s clean and elegant but not too edgy or over-the-top and therefore accessible. Oh and also she’s gorgeous.

To that end she told WWD, “I'm glad that there is a store like Ann Taylor that can offer amazing styles for the many different roles that women play."

But Holmes is not the only big celebrity campaign reveal today. Star-of-the-moment Natalie Portman‘s campaign for Miss Dior Cherie has also been revealed–and she’s wearing nothing but a Blair Waldorf-esque headband with a bow.

Star-spawn Rumer Willis also makes her modeling debut today as the face of Badgley Mischka.

Check it out.

Pro Snowboarders Torah Bright and Erin Comstock Tell Us How to Combat Dry Winter Skin and Cracked Lips

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 08:20 AM PST

I might be missing the latest snowstorm (haha!), but I live in New York. And despite the lovely weather here in Florence, my lips and skin still feel like they’ve been exposed to the elements.

Yet despite the gaggle of moisturizers out there, I still have no idea how to keep my skin soft and smooth during the winter without greasy lotions. And it seems that many of you feel the same way. So I asked professional snowboarders/Roxy spokeswomen Torah Bright and Erin Comstock to explain how they take care of their skin. I mean, if they can manage to keep their skin protected, it should be easy for the rest of us, right? Here’s what Torah and Erin had to say:
