Costco Might Not Be Selling Chanels for Much Longer Posted: 20 Apr 2010 04:30 PM PDT
The warehouse club is taking the Swiss watchmaker to the Supreme Court, appealing a lower court ruling that said Omega had the right to control who bought its products in the grey–or secondary–market. The grey market, which is something luxury brands don’t like to talk about, is where lots of leftover product goes. There’s a secondary seller who buys it from the luxury brands at a major discount–that seller then passes it offer to discount retailers. It doesn’t happen often, because luxury brands tend to burn or melt their extra/imperfect stock, but it does happen. In related news, the European Commission has released a set of rules that say luxury goods makers can block Internet-only retailers from shilling their goods. eBay, which boasts the biggest second-hand luxury market in the world, could be severely affected by this. Luxury goods makers might think they’ll benefit from tighter control, but will they? Do discount retailers really tarnish a brand? |
Jo Wood’s Launching A Line With the Chairman of the BFC Posted: 20 Apr 2010 03:29 PM PDT
Wood’s already launched an organic skincare line, and she’s taken a couple of turns down Vivienne Westwood’s Red Label runway, but we’re not sure about her designer qualifications–other than being a rockstar’s wife. Tillman, however, is an investor in both Aquascutum and Jaeger on top of his role in the BFC. (He also happened to be one of the first male students to attend the London College of Fashion.) So he’s a bit more qualified, but we doubt his role will go beyond that of investor. And if they are actually hiring a designer from Los Angeles (which sounds kind of nuts) then who knows what Jo’s actual role will be. But if she’s gets Dame Vivienne to collaborate, or show up to a party or two, we’ll pay attention. |
Steven Alan x Keds Make My Day Posted: 20 Apr 2010 02:47 PM PDT
So I was elated to find a pair of slip-on Keds–in Steven Alan’s ikat print, no less–on a page in May’s Vogue Index. The shoes, which hit Steven Alan stores–as well as his Web site–May 1, will retail for $68. And there’s no doubting I’ll be heading down to designer’s TriBeCa store to claim a pair. |

Our Favorite Nail Colors for Summer Posted: 20 Apr 2010 12:55 PM PDT
1. Rescue Beauty Lounge’s Pepto Pink. This true pink complements the insane amount of nude and shell-colored clothes we’ve purchased this season. That’s our list. What’s on yours? |

Can Stylists Like Kate Young & Tina Chai Make Boring Clothes Interesting? Posted: 20 Apr 2010 10:59 AM PDT
They’re part of Theory’s “Fashion Insider” initiative, in which they’ve hired 17 stylists (including, inexplicably, Derek Blasberg) to take their classic SS10 collection and make it look both hip and fashion forward—it’s working, I want all of this. Meanwhile, Ann Taylor’s hired four stylists (two of whom overlap with Theory’s program) for their “Style Studio.” It’s similar; they’ve asked a few top stylists to make their LOFT collection look ten times cooler. We don’t know how LOFT has worked their stylists into their retail stores, but Theory’s Meatpacking District location has organized their racks by each A-list stylist (their collective clients include Maggie Gyllenhaal, Scarlett Johansson, Madonna, Amanda Peet and Michelle Williams) which makes it both easy and attractive to shop. These women have an extraordinary eye, but will they make you shop at stores you’ve ignored until now? If it works, we see brands like Land’s End and Gap following suit. Imagine what it would’ve done for Gap if they’d plastered Phoebe Philo’s name all over the place instead of keeping her quietly behind the scenes. |

Not Just Another T-Shirt Line: Richard Chai’s collaboration with Alternative Apparel is well worth a gander. {Refinery29 Shops} Hey, Batter Batter: Donna Karan will throw the first pitch at an upcoming Yankees game. {Stylelist} Fenton/Fallon’s Headed for World Domination: Fallon’s Cairo bib necklace is so popular at Barneys New York that Dana Lorenz produced it in three colors for her latest collection. {Barneys} |

It’s the first ball under Sylvana Soto-Ward’s reign as Vogue’s Director of Special Events, Oprah’s hosting and Gap is sponsoring. Gap’s sponsorship means money, but if it were any other brand it’d also mean serious red carpet visibility. It’s been years since anyone wore Gap on the red carpet, and while we can bet Virginia Smith will rock a plaid button down and long skirt, it’ll be hard to get cotton on anyone else. Unless of course Patrick Robinson—Gap’s head designer and Virginia’s husband—custom makes a gown or two, which we hear he’ll be doing. Will Patrick dress Oprah? Maybe. If not, we hear she was just on the phone with Oscar De La Renta. |

Apparently not. But in this case, that’s not such a bad thing. Vera Wang, whose clothing line for Kohl’s has proved successful, will now design wedding dresses for affordable retailer David’s Bridal. The collection, set to hit US stores early next year, will include dresses priced below $1,500, as well as accessories. Shoes and bridesmaid dresses will likely follow. We think this sounds fantastic. So many girls dream of wearing a Vera Wang dress but simply can’t afford to. Now, that dream will be made a reality. What’s more, diversification is the key to a successful fashion brand. From a business perspective, this is the right move for Wang. The designer has never been shy about going mass: See her deal with Wedgewood and the Serta Mattress Company for proof. With David’s Bridal, much like Kohl’s, there are very few people who will trade down if they can afford the real thing. Wang has the opportunity to attract a whole new range of clients who might buy into her other, more affordable products, like a Vera Wang Lavender Label dress or a pair of sunglasses. |
