Rose Gold Redux

Rose gold is having a moment.

Over the last year, I’ve written plenty of pieces on wedding jewelry, engagement rings and fine jewelry. And every expert I’ve spoken to, every diamond trader I’ve interviewed, has said that rose gold is more popular now than it’s been in years.

But I think what they really mean is that rose gold is en vogue. There is little empirical evidence that the pink-tinged metal is selling more now than it was 20 years ago. However, there is anecdotal evidence that more people interested in fashion and good design are buying it.

For instance, Rebecca Minkoff is using rose gold as a hardware staple in her new, higher-end collection for Saks. Industry-lauded accessories designers like Eddie Borgo use rose gold frequently. And Italian high jewelry firm Pomellato–maybe best known for its beautiful selection of pink gold–is attracting Hollywood’s chicest elite, including current campaign star Tilda Swinton.

In the real world, a good friend of mine chose this rose gold piece as her engagement ring. And in my own life rose gold has surfaced. In high school, I only wore silver and platinum. In college and post-college, I only wore gold. Now I mix those three materials with rose gold nearly every day.
