Whoops! Google Says It “Mistakenly” Shut Down Tavi’s Blog

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 06:03 PM PDT

While Tavi Gevinson’s popular blog is still down as we publish this, a spokesperson from Google tells us:

“The blog in question was mistakenly taken down by our automated system. As soon as we became aware of this, we immediately reinstated it. We have reached out to the user and apologized for the inconvenience.”

So it looks like Gevinson’s post featuring Yohji Yamamoto’s Spring 1998 campaign–in which Maggie Rizer is nude–didn’t get her in trouble after all.

Will the kerfuffle cause Tavi to find a new host? If she starts bringing in more advertising, it might be a worthwhile investment.

Here’s the Photo That Allegedly Shut Tavi Down

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 03:59 PM PDT

This morning Tavi tweeted, “OOPS, I violated Blogger’s Terms of Service so they made my blog private. Not sure what I did and I don’t find out for a couple days. Blah.”

Of course, we wanted to know why, but Google takes a few days to explain their actions and so far Tavi’s guess is as good as ours.

Last week, in honor of her 14th birthday she posted this celebratory picture of Maggie Rizer posing nude but for her black boots in a ad circa 1998.

“So I shall post this photo of Maggie Rizer from Yohji Yamamoto’s Spring 1998 campaign-ribbons seem appropriate for a birthday. 13 was an unbelievably good and lucky year and I hope 14 is good too,” she wrote.

This afternoon she tweeted, “Looks like it was the Yohji photo. Oh come ON.”

We couldn’t agree more. Whoever complained to Blogger, or its owner Google, should be embarrassed.

Repetto’s Making Boots (& the Perfect Tutu)

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 01:43 PM PDT

Kate & I finally got our hands on the perfect tutus —or what we thought were the perfect tutus.

That was before we swung by Repetto’s showroom to see their AW10 collection.

We had low expectations. We love Repetto, but how much can ballet flats change from season to season?

This time they’ve added masks to a few toes and continued marbling the leather, but they’ve also included booties—and not just dance booties—in brown leather with an ankle buckle. The knee-high canvas boot with a ballet-like bow up top is like a fall riding boot, but delicate (and is apparently selling very well). But about those tutus.

They’re soft and fluffy, with a thin scalloped elastic waistband that actually comes in sizes. And though it comes in black and white, and with tops attached, it also comes in the most perfect pale orange-y pink. You can get one online for $128.

Mexico Fashion Week: What it Is and Why it Exists

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 01:01 PM PDT

As if there needed to be another regional event on the ready-to-wear map, Mexico Fashion Week has reared its well-coiffed head. Last week, the Mercedes-Benz sponsored event drew buyers, editors and stylists from around the world. Luckily, our friends at Stylesight were there. We talked to the trend tracking-firm’s Rosalina Villanueva about why exactly Mexico Fashion Week exists, and what it offers the industry.

Fashionista: What exactly is Mexico Fashion Week? Where does it take place, and why should we care?
Rosalina Villanueva: Mexican Fashion Week is a platform for designers based in Mexico and Latin America. The event takes place at Campo Marte, next to the National Auditorium, which is the biggest venue for concerts and other events in Mexico City. The venue holds two runways, and fashion shows go on from noon to 10 pm daily. Some additional jewelry expositions take place outside the shows as well.

This season also marked the debut of student collections from local schools, including Universidad Iberoamericana, Jannette Klein and Centro. And it was the first season that Mexico Fashion Week offered a trend seminar for attendees. I presented the Spring/Summer 2010 mega trends from Stylesight's forecast reports.

Other than Mercedes-Benz, who else sponsors it?
L'Oreal, HSBC, DHL, Johnnie Walker, W Hotels, Visa, Continental and Vive Mexico.

So, when I think of Mexican fashion, I think costume, peasant blouses–how would you define modern Mexican fashion?
There are a lot of young designers with an international vision. I was happy to see that many of the trends we forecast on Stylesight were present in this season's collections. There were a lot of real leathers and furs, which was very different from previous seasons. Designers like Valencia, Carlo Demichelis, and Ricado Seco focused on neutral and dark color palettes, plentiful draping, biker jackets, moody shades and nature-inspired prints with a strong inspiration on minerals and rustic effects. There were also some heavy knits shows by Elena Gomez Toussaint and Cesar Franco, which is uncommon to see in tropical weather collections.

Who were some of your favorite designers from the week? What makes them standout? My personal favorite was Cora Groppo. She’s actually from Argentina–her collection consists of a variety of materials from light gauzes and knits, to strong suede and vinyl, making a mix between shiny and matte finished materials. She showed lovely long cardigans and comfortable leggings. I think her collection was beautiful and unique, yet still commercial. I can see her garments in every part in the world. Also, JL + B Collection had amazing moody nature-inspired prints, full cascading gowns, short draped cocktail dresses, and a strong statement for mineral accessories with quartz and stones.

What’s next for these designers? Will they show at different fashion weeks around the world to gain more exposure?
There are endless opportunities for Mexican designers. Many are born and raised in Mexico, but do have some other backgrounds rooted in Latin America and Europe. They all have talent and a unique vision. I’m sure they'll be able to start venturing to international fashion weeks and have successes beyond the Mexican borders.

Rachel Bilson Is Now An Eyewear Ambassador for Sunglass Hut

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 11:37 AM PDT

While actual acting roles continue to elude Rachel Bilson, her fashion cred just keeps going and going.

Last year, she started penning a style column for InStyle, and now she’s been named Sunglass Hut’s first eyewear ambassador.

Her duties include the obvious—showing up to parties and starring in their ad campaign. But she’ll also be the company’s resident blogger (though they’ve titled it “Style Director”), tackling tough eyewear questions on SunglassHut.com and interviewing her eyewear style icons, including Tory Burch.

Bilson says, “I can't say what makes me a good style adviser for them,” but Sunglass Hut’s CEO counters, “We wanted a symbol of our philosophy, somebody who's familiar and relevant to our target [consumer], but at the same time was herself sunglasses obsessed."

Rachel hopes to interview Karl Lagerfeld because, “he wears sunglasses at all times."

Tavi’s Blog Is Down. Has the 14-Year old Blogger Run Afoul of Google?

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 10:39 AM PDT

Someone sent us an email this morning, “Oh no! Tavi’s blog is down!”

We guessed it’d been hit with too much traffic (or some other sort of technical difficulty on par with our recent troubles).

But no, if you go to stylerookie.com, you’re hit with this:

This blog is under review due to possible Blogger Terms of Service violations and is open to authors only.

It’s the same thing that happened to LOVE’s original blog and they ended up moving over to another host. Tavi’s probably at school right now, and we imagine it’ll be back up this afternoon, but seriously, who sent Blogger (which is owned by Google) a complaint? And over what?

Inside the Imaginarium of Samantha Pleet

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 10:01 AM PDT

Opening the door to Samantha Pleet’s studio is like entering an exotic fantasy world. It’s filled with a jumble of artifacts, tiny knick-knacks, and enough items from The Evolution Store to make me very jealous—the studio’s a spacial manifestation of Samantha’s imagination.

The Brooklyn based designer started her brand in the fall of 2006 and it’s been unstoppable. It has a sense of old-world whimsy while still being twenty-first century practical (the proliferation of rompers will prove that, as will the fact that a majority of the collection is made from eco-friendly materials). Her 2008 collaboration with Urban Outfitters, Rapscallion by Samantha Pleet, made her a household name (at least households with cool kids inside them).

Samantha herself is a bit of a renaissance woman: she produced short films for both her SS10 and AW10 collections, she paints, and she collects tons of little trinkets.

Time Out New York who recently named Ms. Pleet one of their best dressed New Yorks, and bands like Au Revoir Simone and The Dirty Projectors covet Ms. Pleet’s indie frocks, so you don’t have to take our word for it to know she’s one of New York’s coolest young designers.

Fashion News Roundup: Marc & Lorenzo Call it Quits, Daphne Faces Off Against Green Porn for a Webby

The Redcoats: Laura Bailey will wear Stella McCartney to the Met Ball—a “spanking new creamy-nude” gown. Guess the Brits are eschewing this year’s American Women theme. {VogueUK}

Perfume Porn: Daphne Guinness’ short film, Mnemosyne, has been nominated for a Webby in the Weird & Experimental category. It’s up against Green Porn and Piglet Squid. We’re sure Daphne love that. {Webby}

Say It Ain’t So:
Have Marc and Lorenzo really broken up? The same weekend that Robert Duffy tied the knot? We hope Page Six is wrong. {NYPost}

Mouse Hats: Did you love Billy Reid’s fur caps? How about those fur collars? Meet the nutria, a rodent-like creature making its fashion debut next season. {VanityFair}

Color Blind: Fendi’s DIY baguette is back. And now there’s a slew of fashion illustrators—Blue, Danny, Garance—who could make it extra pretty. {NAP}

What Happens When You Read Vogue Cover to Cover

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 08:11 AM PDT

It rained yesterday, which means I took the time to read American Vogue cover to cover (that hasn’t happened since college) and oh the things I discovered!

1. Gap’s pairing with Thakoon, Rodarte, Alexander Wang and Sophie Theallet to make gowns for next month’s Met Ball guests including Natalie Portman, Jessica Alba and M.I.A. And for credit purposes they’ll be called Alexander Wang for Gap etc., just like the CFDA’s annual white shirt initiative. Though based on The September Issue, the only person collaborating with the winners is Anna Wintour, not Patrick Robinson.

2. Apparently, blue and white Breton stripes are in—at least according to William Norwich on page 122. And on page 116, where celebrities pay tribute to Alexander McQueen, Drew Barrymore’s pictured from September, when McQueen was still very much alive.

3. Toward the end of the magazine, Jason Lewis, aka Smith Jerrod, is peddling Charisma sheets and pillows. Wearing an unbuttoned shirt and frosted tips, he rounds out the issue’s Sex and the City 2 theme.

4. This might be the first time Vogue’s featured two women wearing the same dress (ads not included). Gemma Aterton wears Michael Kors‘ grey and white shift on page 177 and then philanthropist Catie Marron wears it again on page 220, but in all fairness to Vogue’s stylists, she’s credited as wearing her own clothes.

5. Hamish uses “cerulean”.
