1. Socks in shoes. This is like troempe l’oiel clothing, which we’ve railed against in the past, but why would you buy shoes with socks sewn in when you can buy the same shoe without a sock and choose whether or not to wear a sock? Especially when we’re talking about Bruno Frisonis with four digit price tags—most people will buy just one. 2. Gilt’s full priced sales. At noon, they launched a week long Helmut Lang sale, and by sale we mean 20 full priced items. Gilt’s VP told WWD, "We don't want to be another place to go and buy full-price product," and mentioned that they’re really only interested in doing something special, “perhaps something developed especially for us.” But the collection they’re selling, and the full priced merchandise they’ve sold in the past is actually available everywhere (or everywhere Helmut Lang’s usually sold). So what are we missing? 3. YSL’s $450 adaptor. Seriously? Vogue’s Senior Accessories Editor “can't imagine [her] life without one.” We assume you’re paying for the pink leather pouch, but we bet they added on an extra $100 just because it’s stamped with the house’s logo. This probably won’t help Stefano fall under Pierre Bergé’s good graces (though yes, we realize even Pilati probably doesn’t know this exists). 4. Lady Gaga buys a Birkin, a real one, and attacks like we did the soles of our 6th grade Converse. |

Stephen Gan on Dreamworks’ Shrek Regrets Posted: 13 Apr 2010 02:09 PM PDT
Dreamworks’ famous green ogre posed for Ellen von Unwerth with V’s Model Search winner, Emma Dumont. The fourth and final Shrek movie will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival next month, and they’ve found at least one new way of promoting it. Dreamworks, however, is less than thrilled with the shoot. A spokesperson told Fox News, “”In hindsight the studio would have declined to have the characters participate,” and the New York Post’s film critic even weighed in, “I don’t think Walt Disney would have allowed Snow White and Cinderella to appear in a magazine spread that made it look like they were about to participate in a menage a trois.” We’ll go ahead and say there’s nothing—nothing—sexual about these shots, and it sounds like Dreamworks is just drumming up even more publicity. Someone probably should’ve picked up an issue of VMan if they’re so concerned. So we asked Stephen Gan, the magazine’s founder and Editor-in-Chief, what he thought. “I find the story funny, and it was done in good humor. As an editor of a progressive men’s magazine in America, one has to constantly think of celebrities, the most stylish models on the planet, and today’s male HEROES…that’s where Shrek comes in! My dream was to see this caliber celebrity make an appearance within a fashion story .” Really, this is the best thing that’s ever happened to a fourth installment of anything. |
Wolf T-Shirt Collectors Exist, and Other Things We Learned From Ronny Kobo Posted: 13 Apr 2010 01:27 PM PDT
If you don’t know the name, you’ve seen it on everyone from Rihanna to Daphne Guinness. But Ronny’s building her trendy t-shirt line into a full-fledged clothing collection for fall. She’s added coats and leather jackets, and remember her wolf shirt? We asked about it—alongside some more serious questions—and learned she’s really embracing the animal theme for fall. Why did you decide to shift gears after being so successful with your t-shirts? I felt like it! It's something that I really wanted for our customer. I always knew that it was in store for myself and Torn, it was just a matter of when and what. We needed the right time to introduce the right product. I also thought that the t-shirts were always reliable and exciting to our customers, but this spring felt like the right time to offer the same confidence to our customers in dresses, jackets, pants, and tops. What’s been the hardest part about flushing out a whole collection? I hate to say that it wasn’t hard at all—it was a totally natural and fluid process. It’s been my dream to be work with interesting fabric and turn my ideas into reality. I’ve been making clothing for friends and for myself for years, so putting it all together was so fun and inspiring. What was your starting point for the new pieces? My sister! She’s a designer for the CFDA award-winning jewlery line Ruby Kobo. She’s effortlessly cool and fashionable. Her key accessory’s ‘comfort’ so she was my ‘muse’ for this collection! What inspired your wolf shirt? Do you wish Zach Galifianakis had worn yours in The Hangover? That’s a funny question!! And one of my favorites!! Yes, I do wish he wore anything of mine in that movie, but the wolves would been ideal!! I was inspired by the original Three Wolf T-shirt which is a popular image amongst all wolf t-shirt collectors, which were originally produced by the Mountain T-shirt company, who I’ve collaborated with for fall. We’re creating more outdoors-y animal type t-shirts for September. ed. note: I’ve seen The Hangover about ten times now, and only when I searched for an image of Galifianakis to link in this story did I realize he’s not actually wearing a wolf shirt, but an image of a human head howling at the moon. Oops. What’s your favorite thing from the new collection? The pleated dress in grey erosion. We developed the print; it was inspired by my science class which I actually loathed. But the images of the cells we used to research stuck in my mind. I love the mini pleats down the front of the dress. What’s been your career highlight so far? Just seeing so many fashionable girls wearing Torn and interpreting it in their own way. I guess my favorite was seeing Daphne Guinness in my sequin blazer from the last holiday collection! It’s such a high. |
Don’t Post Naked Pictures of Your Favorite Fashion Designers, or Models, On Facebook Posted: 13 Apr 2010 12:21 PM PDT
This morning, the social networking site de-activated Peter Davis’ account. Paper’s Editor-at-Large posted a picture of a statue at Rick Owens’ house—a statue that looks like a real naked person and is, if you want to click through to his Twitter, pretty graphic. He was interviewing Owens and snapped images throughout his Paris home, including this one. I probably wouldn’t think twice about posting an amazing, if half naked image of Kate Moss and tagging all of my former interns in it–I haven’t, but I would. And I wouldn’t expect my Facebook account to be de-activated. Though if it was, I’d probably agree with Peter who tweeted, “I am quitting FB. Twitter takes less time.” But the real question is, does anyone who’s friends with Peter Davis care? The great thing about the internet is that everything’s out there, but you get to pick and choose what you click. So if, for example, you don’t ever want to see an image of nude woman, you probably wouldn’t click on a fashion site, or befriend a fashion person. Meanwhile, Davis’ account is already back up and running, so if you we’re one of his 5,000 friends, he’d like you to re-request his friendship. |
Sarah Jessica Parker Told Halston They’d Be “Bludgeoned” For Hiring Her Posted: 13 Apr 2010 11:37 AM PDT “I came to New York originally in 1976, and then I got this part in Annie…I was a little girl, and for some reason they always invited the cast of Annie to Studio 54, so there I was at thirteen and fourteen, and the doorman would usher us in, literally underneath his arms. And it was 1977 in New York City, and you couldn’t be alive and not know the name Halston….There was every reason to say no, and there were very compelling reasons to say yes.” –Sarah Jessica Parker on Halston, in Vogue. |

Dolce & Gabbana Celebrate the World Cup Their Way Posted: 13 Apr 2010 08:59 AM PDT
And by fashion, we do mean underwear. They’ve just one upped Calvin Klein’s star studded campaign with a cast of Italian soccer players—Antonio Di Natale, Vincenzo Iaquinta, Claudio Marchisio, Federico Marchetti and Domenico Criscito—in honor of the upcoming World Cup. The tournament starts June 11th in South Africa, but these ads should debut next week and if there’s anyone in Europe who isn’t already excited, this should do the trick. The campaign was photographed by Mariano Vivanco, whom Domenica and Stefano have hired for sports related projects before, and everything in the collection’s stamped with the Italian flag, just in case the team colors aren’t patriotic enough. |

They’re calling it “a couture tabletop collection” and so far, there are eight patterns of bone china–each one’s inspired by a Marchesa dress. We’re just guessing at left, but the winding gold threads on the French Lace plate look just like look 24 from the SS10 collection. But they haven’t just made plates, they’ve included stemware and giftware (which we’re guessing means platters and other extra-large tableware). Lenox bills itself as a bridal brand, which sort of explains the partnership. Georgina explains, “We could not ask for a better partner than Lenox to materialize our vision into impeccable dinnerware." We’ve waited for Marchesa’s expansion. Where’s the girly fragrance? The perfect party shoes? Plates are the last thing we’d expect. |
