Vogue’s Throwing New York’s Biggest Fashion Show for Fashion’s Night Out 2010

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 09:01 PM PDT

On September 7, Fashion’s Night Out is hosting what they claim will be the biggest fashion show ever staged in New York City.

By biggest, they mean over 200 models on the runway and 1500 seats for onlookers. We can’t even fathom a fashion show with 200 models, and 200 looks, but it sounds like a proper extravaganza. Instead of focusing on specific designers, the show will feature fall’s biggest trends.

“We felt it is important for people see what wonderful fashion will be in stores at that moment. This show will focus on the key trends we've identified for Fall so that shoppers will have plenty of inspiration to join the fun during Fashion's Night Out,” says Anna Wintour.

That is, after all, the objective—to get customers to shop during Fashion’s Night Out three days later so expect a parade of shearling, a military and camel.

Vogue’s partnering with Spec Entertainment to produce the show, which, when combined with FNO’s proven celebrity presence should make for a successful special on CBS on September 15.

However, if you’d rather see it live, tickets to the show will go on sale at Lincoln Center’s box office this summer—and a portion of the proceeds will go to The New York City AIDS Fund.

L’Oreal Acquires Essie

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 04:39 PM PDT

Mega beauty brand L’Oreal is buying Essie, the 29-year-old nail varnish company that, over the last few years, has upped its profile by distributing fashion-forward colors at just $8 a bottle.

L’Oreal, a public company that also owns brands like Kérastase and Kiehl’s, said that it wouldn’t disclose the terms of the deal. However, it did reveal that Essie sold about $28 million worth of nail polish in 2009.

Will this change anything about Essie? Probably not much, although we’re sure L’Oreal will up the brand’s distribution outside of nail salons. Essie’s main competitor, OPI, is in every CVS and Walgreens around. Essie is in some, but not as many. To match or exceed OPI’s annual sales of $150 million, it’s got to be available to more consumers.

Is This Christian Louboutin’s First Ad Campaign?

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 02:59 PM PDT

These images of a single Louboutin floating through Alice in Wonderland-like space have surfaced.

We’ve never seen a Christian Louboutin ad before—the beloved shoe designer doesn’t need them—it’s like of a sudden we woke up one morning and everyone’s soles were red. But these images must’ve been produced for advertising purposes; no other product is featured, which means they’re not part of an accessories editorial. And even though they lack Louboutin’s name or logo, they look like they might be mid-retouching.

Photographer Khuong Nguyen is credited, and given the opulence of the featured shoes they’ll probably run overseas in Russia or the Middle East.

Which American designer used to dress like a girl in high school, complete with ponytail & knee highs? Eventually his parents got fed up with the whole thing and marched him to his favorite store to buy a boy’s wardrobe.

Designer To Watch: Margarita Saplala

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 01:35 PM PDT

While wandering through Barneys CO-OP last week, I noticed a lot of newish labels. One rack in particular caught my eye, because it was loaded with dresses done in bright blues and greens; they really stood out in the sea of neutrals.

The label on the gorgeous, simple, drapey silk dresses read “Margarita Saplala.” Who, you ask, is that? I'm pretty certain you'll be hearing more about her soon.

New York-based and a Philippines native, 32-year-old Saplala moved to Chicago when she was two, and has been in the city for about a decade. She attended design school at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was originally interested in drawing and painting. After taking an accessories class and loving it, she decided that two dimensions wasn't enough and switched to fashion design.

She landed an assistant designer job at Halston right out of school, then worked for Heike Jarick. This was followed by stints freelancing at Banana Republic, Old Navy, and Guess. A high-end t-shirt line came next, and she used this collection to experiment with prints. "Then, I started using silk dresses because they give you more leeway to be creative with prints,” says Saplala. “It's like painting–I think of it as making small works of art." She creates all the prints herself, and her silk pieces are all manufactured in NYC.

She currently offers a small collection of silk dresses, tops, and harem pants. The pieces are pretty seasonless and simple, in a good way, and they give you lots of styling options. She's hoping to do a presentation during NY Fashion Week this fall. Barneys just picked her up, and you can find her clothes at lots of boutiques throughout the country and in Asia. Take a peek at her Web site. Everything is $300 or less.

As a former Chicagoan myself and a huge fan of easy, casual dresses, I'm rooting for Margarita. Here are some of the pieces from her AW2010 collection:

Montauk’s Surf Lodge Will Boast a Bazaar This Summer

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 11:45 AM PDT

From Tracy Feith to Steven Alan to TOMS shoes, plenty of surf-inspired labels have set up temporary shop in Montauk over the past couple of summers.

This season, Feith’s former spot at the Montauk Surf Lodge will be replaced by Surf Bazaar, a multi-brand boutique edited by Bethany Mayer, former owner of Nolita’s now-closed-but-well-loved Hedra Prue.

“The brands I pulled together represent the best of designer collections that are aesthetically inspired by the ocean, beach, and nature,” Bethany told us.

Featured labels include Suno, Loomstate, sunglasses maker Alexandra Cassaniti and ethical clothing collection Lem Lem.

For those making Montauk your second home this season: Trust us. The Bazaar is sure to require a weekly visit.

Imitation of Christ Is On Its Way Back

"While I've been recovering, I've decided to bring back IOC in its most basic incarnation: easy-to-wear staples with an edge. I'm calling this line just "Imitation." I'm inspired by Coco Chanel and her use of jersey. I'd like to do that with Imitation. I want something effortless as a T-shirt, but in dress, trench, and jacket shapes." –Tara Subkoff’s making a comeback, and we cannot wait.

New Pierre Hardy for Gap Booties

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 10:00 AM PDT

Gap’s new pant initiative is featured in this morning’s WWD, but we’re more interested in the barely mentioned Pierre Hardy shoes.

There appear to be two for fall, so far. A black laced-up bootie has a wedge heel and either two types of leather or plain leather trim on top of suede. The other, a chocolate brown style laces about a quarter way up the calf with a tan rubber sole. There’s no word on price points, but they’ll probably fall into the $150-$200 range like last fall’s collection. Last fall’s collection, however, never quite made it into stores on their scheduled day, and later trickled into one or two Gaps across the city, so it’d be great if these actually made it into Gap stores.

Meanwhile, the article mentions shearling and leather aviator jackets so we’re placing all of our bets on Patrick Robinson to make something great, for less than $3000.
