This Weekend’s Best Shopping Bets

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 01:41 PM PDT

Sunshine means shopping fever in New York (and food fever, too) and though it’s cooled off, tomorrow’s full of options.

The best of which is the opening of the Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene. They’re throwing a scavenger hunt in honor of their first day back and have a bunch of new vendors to kick start the summer (or spring). Refinery29 has a solid rundown of your best bets. (And they tell you the secrets to a free hotdog).

Meanwhile, Timo Weiland and his design partner Alan Eckstein will be hanging out at Pas de Deux on East 11th Street. They’ll be selling limited edition neckwear, as well as pieces from their AW10 collaboration with Albertus Swanepoel–like the turban at left which beats the turbans here. And if for some reason you’re not in the mood to shop, you can still enjoy champagne and sherbet.

And if you still haven’t checked out Isabel Marant’s new store, do that before running uptown to Barneys to buy the very last pair of Miu Miu bird Mary Jane’s.

“Three Decades of Fashion” to Pop Up in New York in May

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 12:59 PM PDT

Last night, after Jack Purcell’s spring campaign party (seriously, The Selby is everywhere), I headed to Chinatown for Dale Style and Carol Schuster's "Three Decades of Fashion" preview event.

Carol Schuster is the Worldwide Managing Director for Global Brand Management at Ogilvy & Mather, which means she has traveled the world and amassed an extraordinary collection of clothes.

The preview—which was also a pre-sale shopping party—was held at Carol’s apartment, and women of all ages filled the first floor, scouring racks and enjoying champagne cocktails.

I didn't buy anything, though I was definitely tempted. There were some amazing pieces: a black leather Balenciaga vest, this Prada lips skirt, YSL Le Smokings and much more. And that’s not even half of it.

Carol’s full collection includes Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Dries Van Noten, Hermès and Margiela to name a few, and it will be sold to the public at pop-ups around New York—the first of which will be held on Saturday, May 8th from 11am to 5pm at Dailymotion Studios (80 Fifth Avenue).

If you’re a vintage enthusiast, or even just a fashion lover, you should definitely it check out.

Don’t Want a Week With Anna? How About a Suit From Stella? A Dress From Vera?

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 12:13 PM PDT

Charitybuzz.com has gone fashion crazy.

After announcing a couple of days ago that they were auctioning off a week at Vogue to benefit the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights, they’ve sent over a list of items up for grabs in honor of Earth Day’s 40th Anniversary.

You can bid on a bespoke suit, made of sustainable fabric, custom fitted by Stella McCartney herself. We’ll hope, for the winner’s sake, that Raquel’s jumpsuit at left is an option. Of, if you’re more of a Vera Wang kind of girl (or like Lauren, you got engaged last night), you can bid on a $10,000 credit to Vera’s store and have dinner with the designer, too.

If your tastes are more Italian, how about two front row tickets to Missoni’s next show? Plus lunch and a fitting with Angela Missoni. And if you’re really looking for balls out glamour, you can bid on a fitting with and dress from Armani for next year’s Vanity Fair Oscar party–because the winner gets two tickets to that, too.

The auction benefit a variety of charities including the NRDC, Oceana and Conservation International and given the initial bids–$5000, $17,500–fashion’s on quite a charity roll.

Tim Blanks on Malcolm McLaren, the “Silver-Tongued Devil”

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 11:23 AM PDT

“It's going to be all ‘Sex Pistols svengali’ and ‘punk impresario’ and—God forbid—’Vivienne Westwood's plus one’ for a few weeks, but more than three decades has passed since '76/'77 and McLaren's wide-open mind roamed far and wide, teasing, poking, finding gems in dark corners.” –Tim Blanks remembers Malcolm McLaren.

Gucci’s Sending Its Artisans On Tour

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 10:50 AM PDT

Gucci’s leather workers have been on a world tour for most of 2010, but they’re finally coming to America.

The artisans are taking up residence in their ‘Artisan Corners’ within individual Gucci stores. The corners include custom work tables, sewing machines, leather stands and metal tools. The artists will be introduced to each city with a VIP event before they’re available to the public for a couple of days. It’s a rare chance to see how a $1000 handbag’s built, from the initial stages like mood boards and sketches to the end, which in this case can include having your initials embossed on the bag, or a commemorative plaque inside.

They’ll be building custom leather goods, but they’re emphasizing the classics as part of their Forever Now campaign, which they want to draw attention to their long family history of leather goods (not unlike Louis Vuitton’s Heritage campaign).

Individual tour dates after the jump!

4.22 Beverly Hills / 347 North Rodeo Drive, 90210 / 310.278.3451
4.26 Chicago / 900 North Michigan Avenue, 60611 / 312.664.5504

The Gentlewoman Finally Hits New York Newsstands

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 10:19 AM PDT

I can’t tell you how many newsstands Kate, Lauren & I have popped into over the last two weeks looking for The Gentlewoman. Like Kate says, “A naked Phoebe Philo, yes please!”

So this morning, like a one-two punch, I found it on my way to the office post-breakfast at Isabel Marant. I haven’t had a chance to read the whole thing, but I’ve flipped through at least five times and it’s brilliant. The magazine, from the founders of Fantastic Man, is edited by Penny Martin who conducts a lot of the interviews, too.

There’s cleaning advice from Daisy Lowe and a lesson on manners from Julie Verhoeven. There is, of course, the epic story on Phoebe Philo, but also notes on correspondence and food, as well as profiles on Sara Pérez, a Spanish winemaker and Belgian artist Catharina van Eetvelde scattered among the simple editorials.

The best part may be the tips section at the back of the book. Thirty-nine women, including Eniko Mihalik, Zoe Cassavetes, the Mulleavys, Inez van Lamsweerde & Katie Hillier contributed ideas in regard to gift-giving. Click through for some of our favorite images from the debut issue (which, by the way, can be found at the newsstand on Spring & Lafayette).

New York’s Isabel Marant Store Opens at 2PM Today

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 09:40 AM PDT

Isabel Marant finally opens her first US store today.

Nicolas Andre, the same architect responsible for her three Paris boutiques, designed the wide open space-her biggest yet. It looks more like a gallery than a store, with freshly cut wood floors and a natural wood cocoon in the middle of the store which houses her jewelry and a few bags (literally, just three bags). The room’s framed with wooden blocks, stacked and waved in a way that makes them look like sand dunes if you squint.

The furs are at the front, so if you’re craving a candy colored jacket you should probably get to 469 Broome by 1:30, at the latest. Her Etoile collection’s in the back, next to a rack of her now iconic sweats and sweatshirts and a couple of fringed boots are scattered across the floor.

If you’re saving up for fall’s red leather leggings instead, we suggest avoiding Soho today.

Fashion News Roundup: How To Get Shot by The Selby, Vogue’s May Cover & Marc’s Music

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 09:00 AM PDT

In Your Place: Judging from the masses of rolled pants, scarves and pops of color posing around New York Fashion Week, Refinery29’s How to Get Shot By The Sartorialist flow chart worked wonders. Now they’d like to explain how to get the Selby “all up in your place.” Their style director, Piera Gelardi, did such a good job with her watercolors we thought Todd was in on this. {Refinery29}

Surf’s Up: WhoWhatWear’s editorials always make us long for California, but this one makes the longing positively painful. We probably wouldn’t wear Herve Leger to surf, but crazier things have happened. {WhoWhatWear}

Cover Girl: Bryanboy tweeted an early look at Vogue’s May cover, which stars Sarah Jessica Parker. Just in time for SATC2. {TwitPic}

Marc’s Music: Of course one of Marc’s designers is in a band. In fact, we’d bet more than one. But this particular one is in a band called Unsolved Mysteries and their album, Tragic Trouble, is sold in Marc’s stores. You can hear their single here. {Nylon}

Nifty Knickers: We’ve been in the mood to buy pretty bloomers lately. This pair really fuels our fire. {Vanessa Jackman}

Eva Herzigova & Gisele Go to Paris to Sell Their Wares

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 08:13 AM PDT

A few months ago, Etam hired Eva Herzigova to design the clothes to Natalia Vodianova’s bras.

The latter unveiled her fall collection, her first for 1.2.3 (which is owned by Etam), at the Crillon in Paris yesterday. Like almost every other model who’s landed a design contract, the clothes are based on Eva’s own, but their target age range of 40 and up differs from the norm. A website will launch in July, but were more interested in Etam’s love of models. How about shoes by Lara Stone?

She’s notorious for her inability to walk in crazy shoes and thus the perfect choice to whip up wearable heels.

Meanwhile, Gisele flew to Paris to promote her Ipanema flip flops. She admitted to WWD that she doesn’t actually design a thing, “I am very inspired by nature and like to use that for my ideas, but actually designing them — no way. I would be a disaster.”

Could anyone other than Gisele get away with admitting they don’t actually design the line they’re paid to design? We want to say Kate Moss, but probably not.

StyleLikeU Adds Video Editorials

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 07:33 AM PDT

StyleLikeU, Elisa Goodkind’s eclectic style-centric website, just added video editorials to their table of contents.

If you’re not already obsessed with it, the site covers a wide range of people–all with stellar, individual style–without the gloss of street style sites. (Including our very own RashomonRebel!) Elisa and her team go inside closets and homes to drag out the stories behind beloved pieces of clothing, talk inspiration and discover what makes some of the most unique people tick, style-wise.

They’ve already published three editorials, the last of which features a film directed by Jason Last, styled by Elisa and starring LadyFag. It’s more creative, and more vibrant, than the usual fashion film fare. And while we love any site that gives us a peek into the lives and closets of those we love, this might be our favorite for one simple reason: It’s perfectly easy to find what you’re looking for.
