Is Scarlett Johannson Wearing Phillip Lim in Her Latest Mango Campaign?

Racked wants to know if you think Scarlett Johannson’s new Mango ads are creepy or beautiful.

We want to know if she’s wearing Phillip Lim’s SS10 resort lace dress, or an identical copy Mango’s reproduced for their fall collection. We’ve been staring at it all day and we can’t tell.

The Lim dress is one of the best white lace dresses we’ve seen for under $1000. Teen Vogue’s Mary Kate Steinmiller wore it so well during Fashion Week, Lily Aldrige wore it to the Grammys and we’d wear it way too often. It probably sold for around $600.

Mango’s looks like a fantastic rip-off and it’ll probably cost about $200. But we’d bet the other $400 that it won’t look like it does on Scarlett when it hits stores at the end of the summer. Click through for a closer look.

Need a Life Change? Cut Your Hair

Posted: 16 Apr 2010 01:57 PM PDT

I know I’ve already told you about the bob, but it’s been two weeks and I’m just now used to it.

It might sound melodramatic to say it’s changed my life, cutting off about seven inches of hair—but it has.

For one thing, I don’t have to wash it everyday. And the dirtier it gets, the better it looks.

When it was long, even hairspray made it look gross, but now the more product the better. So far, I’ve been using the Tigi curls rock amplifier cream (because it came in the Chris Kane tote at his show) and Sebastian hairspray (because it came in Henry Holland’s gift bags once). But if I had to pick one, it’d be Bumble and bumble’s Surf Spray.

In junior high, I was obsessed with the idea of consistently beachy waves. My mom, who wouldn’t buy her 13-year-old $22 hair product (rightly so), convinced me that it was just sea salt and water so we bought a spray bottle and made it — which did nothing to my hair except make it wet. But now I can spend my own money on Surf Spray and it’s like magic. My hair looks and feels like it does after a day at the beach, without the sand, and when I spray it 19 times in the morning it makes my apartment smell like the beach.

What’s the other big change? The way straight men react to short hair.

They hate it. Sure, I’m generalizing, but I’ve asked a handful of them and all but one prefer a girl with long hair. A few say, “it really depends on the girl,” but they all agree that if they were dating a girl with long hair and she cut it short, they’d be kind of bummed.

It’s the first time in my adult life—or the four years since I’ve lived in New York—that I’m not cat-called, whistled at, or followed down the block by men, which is actually great. (And this isn’t me thinking I’m hot, I’m pretty sure it happens to every woman in New York—or at least the ones with long hair!)

Costello Tagliapietra Designs for Uniqlo

Posted: 16 Apr 2010 10:49 AM PDT

Costello Tagliapietra’s designed 14 dresses for Uniqlo.

The capsule collection hits stores May 20th and prices range from just $29 to $39.

When we interviewed Robert Tagliapietra and Jeffrey Costello last year, they said they’d love to do a lower priced line, on one condition, “I'd love to do that and gear it towards women,” Robert said. “But…designers and the industry are targeting this fifteen-year-old girl, though the person who can afford it's more like thirty, forty.”

Which is probably why the boys didn’t partner with Target, or even H&M. Their styles for Uniqlo are both grown up and sleek, and that’s why they’re so well loved in the first place.

Jenna Lyons Is Filming Oprah Right Now

Posted: 16 Apr 2010 09:59 AM PDT

J.Crew’s Executive Creative Director Jenna Lyons is filming for Oprah right now.

Oprah isn’t in New York, but her team’s taken over J.Crew’s Broadway offices to film Jenna for this Wednesday’s show.

A source says it’ll take a look at the “behind the scenes stuff” Jenna handles on a day to day basis.

She was featured in the March issue of Oprah’s magazine, and Oprah’s lauded J.Crew right and left both online, on her show, and in O, so it’s not surprising she’s finally filming Jenna for the show. We hope Mickey makes a bicycle riding cameo!

Be Italian: Stella McCartney’s opened up shop in Milan, her first in Italy. Forget the shoes, we’re obsessed with the parquet floor. {TheMoment}

The Wackness: Park Slope’s food co-op wants to sue Barneys for improper use of the world ‘co-op’ now that they’re opening up shop in Brooklyn. We get that it’s annoying, but they can’t seriously think it’ll affect their brand image. {TheCut}

Southern Sell: Beyonce’s designed a capsule collection for C&A and she’s starring in their Valentine’s Day campaign, but that’s Brazilian Valentine’s Day which lands on June 12. She taped the commercial in New York this week. {MadeInBrazil}

Fast Fashion: That didn’t take long. Claire Danes wore Zac Posen for Target to the Natural History Museum’s annual dance last night. {Jezebel}

Go Get Your Zac Posen for Target —Now!

Posted: 16 Apr 2010 08:47 AM PDT

Target kicked off their Zac Posen collection in Midtown last night.

They went all out, draping the ceiling in crystals and filling a tower full of hydrangeas and roses in the center of the room. The Like played on stage, The City filmed upstairs and by the time we arrived, about an hour and a half after the party started, most of the racks were empty—but I managed to snag the dress at left.

It fits well, as did the few other things I threw on over my jeans and t-shirt. Some of it, the convertible dresses and the tie-dyed t-shirts, looked like Target, but most of it looked great. The red leather jacket could’ve stepped off of Isabel Marant’s fall runway and the gown looked and felt like it should cost more than $69. More importantly, it fit both a size 2 and a size 8.

The girls camping out on 8th Avenue won’t be disappointed, especially since they’re actually there for the clothes. Though they’d been sitting outside since 6pm (listening to the Tea Partiers protest down the block), they couldn’t have cared less when people like Pat Field, Zac Posen or Selma Blair walked by, though we could barely contain ourselves when Tanya D walked by on our way out.

Zac’s collection will be available in Target stores April 25, or on the corner of 34th Street and 8th Avenue until 11PM tonight!

Will Gilt Start Its Own Line? Should It?

Posted: 16 Apr 2010 07:59 AM PDT

First, designers allowed Gilt to sell current season merchandise for a fraction of the department store price within weeks of its arrival on brick and mortar floors.

Then, it started selling full-priced product from brands like Helmut Lang.

Now, rumors are circulating Gilt is starting its own label. While creditable sources say that this rumor is just that—a rumor—we don’t think it’s a bad idea. Here’s why:

Pros:
Even tighter inventory control.
Even larger markup.
Easy way to supplement product when other brands’ inventories are low.

Cons:
Risk brand dilution.
People might not buy it.
The thing about a private label is that, even when it doesn’t have a fantastic sell-through, it still typically makes the company money because it’s so cheap to produce. (Consider Barneys private label–They’ve always got a ton of inventory left, but they keep making it. There must be some sort of financial gain.)

In the end, this could be Gilt’s way of truly separating itself from the flash sales pack.
