Karl Lagerfeld’s Coming to New York Fashion Week

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 07:00 AM PDT

The Couture Council of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology will bestow its annual honor upon Karl Lagerfeld this September, at the start of New York Fashion Week.

Somehow, the prolific designer’s actually expected to attend the awards ceremony and stick around for Fashion’s Night Out (at Anna’s behest, we’re sure) despite the fact that he’ll have to show three collections—Fendi, Lagerfeld and Chanel—in the following weeks.

Valerie Steele, the museum’s director, told WWD they’d chosen Karl because “He is not just incredibly respected within the fashion world, but also known to everybody and instantly recognizable." And though they do honor a designer every year, this year they’ve named a special award, the Fashion Visionary.

There’s so much buzz around Fashion Week already that it feels like it should start next week, and not next September (but thank god it doesn’t).

What to Expect from Fashion Week at Lincoln Center

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 03:40 PM PDT

Less than a day after Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week head honcho Fern Mallis announced she was leaving to head up her own consulting firm, parent company IMG sent out an email blast detailing its plans for holding next season’s shows at Lincoln Center.

While we couldn’t spy anything groundbreaking in the release, here’s what was of interest:

  • The shows will be held September 9 to 16.

  • There will be a roomy lobby for press and buyers to putz around in.
  • They’ve dedicated space for video installations and other “alternative” presentations, as well as an outdoor space.
  • Along with three runways, there will also be a room for live presentations and press conferences.
  • Free Wifi for everyone! For iPhone users, that means no more dealing with AT&T’s terrible service when trying to check your email.

Designers Move Into Their CFDA Incubator, & Other CFDA News

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 12:46 PM PDT

In February, the CFDA announced its newest project, The Fashion Incubator.

The council chose 12 designers to work in their Garment Center building, each with their own studio, including Prabal Gurung, Subversive’s Justin Giunta, and Bibhu Mohapatra.

While the designers appear to be having fun decorating their new space, it sounds like they’re having even more fun spreading out and building their new collections in rooms with windows. “At times you might have found us cross-legged on the floor finishing up orders for shipment," said Yuhvi Alpert of Ruby Kobo of his old digs.

Meanwhile, the CFDA’s awards are just over a month away and while some, like Michael Kors and Kim Hastreiter are guaranteed awards, others are still up to a final vote, including the popular vote. Voting’s gone live on WWD, where you can pick your favorite designer of 2009. Casting your vote also enters you into a drawing for the chance to win tickets to New York Fashion Week.

See you there!

Bleecker Embraces Men: Two shops have opened in the West Village this week. Gant’s Rugger store is at 353 Bleecker and Freeman’s Sporting Club’s landed on that corner of Bleecker and Christopher. You know, the one that’s been shuttered for years. {Valet & Thrillist}

Oprah Made Naomi Campbell Promise Not To Throw Her Phone

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 07:44 AM PDT

Oprah should feature all fashion people from now until the Met Ball, but she’s at least landed an interview with Naomi Campbell.

The supermodel filmed her spot yesterday afternoon, and Oprah managed to get her to sign a “No Phone Throwing Zone” pledge in front of a live audience. It’s a spoof off of Oprah’s No Phone Zone pledge, in which she gets people to pledge not to use their cell phones when driving. Naomi had to sign that one, too, though we doubt she drives herself anywhere.

Oprah also asked Naomi about last week’s blood diamond incident in which the model was accused of accepting a blood diamond from former Liberian President Charles Taylor years ago.

Tune in Monday for the episode.
