Best Dressed: Greta in Narciso, Kruger in Jill, Saoirse in Chanel, and More Posted: 08 Apr 2011 02:30 PM PDT Film stars did the red carpet proud this week. Greta Gerwig celebrated Arthur in a stunning Narciso Rodriguez frok, Diane Kruger kept it casual in Celine flats and Jill Stuart romper, Michelle Monaghan took a well-played risk in the fabulous Juan Carlos Obando, and Hanna star Saoirse Ronan stunned in Chanel. Our token model, Jessica Stam, proved her worth in an adorably dotty Emporio Armani ensemble. Last Night’s Party: Mawi’s Carnival Hits London Posted: 08 Apr 2011 02:00 PM PDT LONDON–A bustling street party erupted last night, as Mawi launched its first store, as well as a full funfair spectacle in the realms of East London. Headed by Indian-born Mawi Keivom, who introduced her eponymous jewelry line in 2003 after working for Isaac Mizrahi, Mawi still maintains its quirky niche, yet is one of those jewelry labels you can actually find. Now, with the opening of its first flagship concept store in London's Shoreditch, the label treads new ground, translating the creative spirit of the design onto the shop-floor with a set theme–this season's being a fairground (carnival) filled with gypsies, candy and balloons. John Derian Decorates Repettos for a New Capsule Collection Posted: 08 Apr 2011 01:30 PM PDT It’s difficult to leave John Derian‘s East Village boutique without buying something. Or several things. A purveyor of curiosities, Derian may be best known for his vintage inspired paperweights and plates, but his store is filled with everything from French notebooks to Hugo Guinness linoleum prints. And as of last night, Repetto ballet flats have been added to the mix. But not just any slippers: these limited edition styles are the result of a collaboration between Derian and longtime friend/Repetto North America director Michael Flanagan. “My friends have been wearing the shoes for so long–I just thought it was a good match. And the printing is amazing,” he told us at last night’s in-store event celebrating the partnership. Derian’s signature vintage prints adorn the shoes, giving the traditional ballet flat a subtly ornate touch. At Langoliers, It’s All About the Knitty-Gritty Posted: 08 Apr 2011 01:00 PM PDT As we made our way into last night’s Langoliers jewelry presentation at Good Units, the Hudson Hotel’s underground installation venue, our eyes instantly gravitated not toward the wearable works on display, but towards one of the cooler chandeliers we’ve ever seen. Created entirely by hand by the line’s duo of designers, Pamela Liou and Zon Chu, the webby chiffon-and-chain fixture took five straight days to finish, “although I think it took a couple years off my life,” Liou joked. A possible future in home decor notwithstanding, Langoliers’ fall collection involved Liou and Chu’s applying their experience in knitwear to metals and chain. Truth Art Beauty Will Whip You Up Custom-Made Organic Skincare Posted: 08 Apr 2011 12:30 PM PDT You can walk into Whole Foods and choose some organic broccoli and be pretty sure that it is what it claims to be. This is not always the case with organic cosmetics and skincare. The products are largely unregulated and there's not a strict certification system. It's often difficult to figure out what's actually in your products if you're trying to stay green. Enter Caron Proschan and Emily Graham, two Harvard business school grads who share a love of beauty products and a frustration about the lack of transparency in the industry. They launched TruthArtBeauty.com in February and it's one of the more unique beauty sites I've seen. It combines all-natural ingredients with customization. They offer you a list of ingredients, along with an explanation of the benefits of each particular additive. Through a step-by-step process, you choose the oils, extracts, and powders, and then they mix it and ship it to you. No preservatives are used and nothing is synthetic, so your item will be stamped with a "made on" date and an expiration date. Lela Rose Answers Your Wedding Fashion Questions: Day 2 Posted: 08 Apr 2011 12:00 PM PDT In honor of bridal fashion week, designer Lela Rose has been kind enough to answer your wedding day style questions. Dear Lela, I’m on a budget and I’m planning to have a DIY wedding, however I want to have a wedding dress that doesn’t go over $500! I also am seeking an off-white short (knee-length or above-the-knee) dress since I’m petite (5’3″). What do you suggest? Katie Grand Wears Miu Miu on Safari, and Other Things We Learned From Visiting Miu Miu’s New E-Shop Posted: 08 Apr 2011 11:30 AM PDT Lately, all my favorite brands have been hitting the net with e-commerce, from Suno to Mary Kate and Ashley, and today Miu Miu. Miu Miu is definitely late to join the web game (at least among major brands), but that doesn’t mean it won’t come in handy for fashion fanatics who are too busy traveling to pop into a brick and mortar store. Among said fanatics may be Love editor Katie Grand, who took her trusted Miu Miu frock on safari with her in Kenya. (Which I only know thanks to my twitter stalking of @THELOVEMAGAZINE) Don’t worry, you can get the same dress here for $2,420. Textbook for Fashionista: Edie Sedgwick Posted: 08 Apr 2011 10:00 AM PDT Fans of the Tumblr blog Textbook, take note: Fashionista has teamed up with the blog's mastermind, John Jannuzzi, to create storyboards for our industry's style stars. (See an archive of his work for us here.) Easily one of New York’s most famous icons, Edie Sedgwick made her name in the Warhol era. One of his favorites, she was often spotted at The Factory and starred in several of his short films. In truth, the early part of Edie’s New York life was pretty fantastic and people all over wanted to emulate her style: leotards, chandelier earrings and a generally excessive attitude. However, as her fame spiraled upward, Edie spiraled downward into drug and alcohol abuse. After a tumultuous relationship and her career on pause, she returned to her family in California for some semblance of health and control. Shortly after being married, her addictions got the better of her and she succumbed to an overdose. Still, she’s one of New York’s most cherished style icons. We recommend emulating her wardrobe, not her lifestyle. 1. Factory Girl 2. On the Town 3.
