Posted: 21 Apr 2011 05:47 AM PDT Last week, Yvonne York, the Huffington Post’s royals correspondent, rather confidently claimed that little known Brit designer Sophie Cranston was designing Kate Middleton’s wedding dress: “I’ve reported many exclusive details on the royal wedding, but my biggest scoop is undoubtedly the identity of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress designer,” she wrote. “I can reveal that Sophie Cranston of the Libélula label is said to have won the coveted commission to make Catherine’s wedding dress.” The Daily Mail seemed to confirm the report, adding that Cranston would merely be the dressmaker while Middleton herself, drawing on her art history background, would design her own wedding dress. Speculation over who would design Kate’s wedding dress has run rampant: everyone from Bruce Oldfield to Sarah Burton at McQueen to Jasper Conran has been named as a possible contender for the job. So if it seemed too good to be true that the wedding dress mystery would be solved so neatly (and that the commission had gone to a little known designer), that’s because it was. Posted: 20 Apr 2011 03:18 PM PDT ASOS and its affordable, adorable, perfectly on-trend offerings has made believers out of fashion lovers on this side of the pond, and we’re no exception. And after leaving the fall 2011 presentation yesterday, we wanted to skip spring altogether and go right to fall. Almost. There are several distinct collections at ASOS for fall, each with its own vibe and price point. The Black and White collections are the most high-end, with prices ranging from $200-$400. Black skews evening, with elaborate laser-cut neoprene dresses and slick metallic pants, while White is dressy daytime. Kelly Cutrone Shows Off New Client Ultra Diamonds With a Helicopter Ride to Woodbury Commons Posted: 20 Apr 2011 02:30 PM PDT Normal Gets You Nowhere is the title of Kelly Cutrone's new book, but perhaps the mantra extends even further–like into her method for organizing press events. Marshaling a dozen editors and bloggers eighty miles away from their offices in the middle of a work day is no small challenge. But leave it to Kelly and her People’s Revolution team to find a solution that was definitely not normal, in the best way possible. For yesterday’s reopening of the Ultra Diamonds store in Woodbury Commons (a pretty amazing outlet mall about a 90 minute drive from Manhattan), Kelly ordered helicopters to whisk her guests straight from 34th street to suburbia in twenty short minutes. Those minutes went by even faster with the aid of Kelly’s in-flight commentary: I’ve never heard anyone praise cloudy weather for being “goth” before, but hey, it kind of was. And in a testament to the ironclad memory that surely contributes to her PR success, Kelly remembered our helicopter pilot from his flying her once before– over a year ago– and asked about his daughter. A (Not So Serious) Guide to Kate Middleton’s Sloane Ranger Style Posted: 20 Apr 2011 01:40 PM PDT The major difference between the class system in America and the class system in Britain is that Americans act like theirs doesn’t exist, except for when they’re talking about it behind each other’s backs. (Or watching Gossip Girl.) Brits, on the other hand, have a more rigid class system but are also more than willing [...] Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 20 Apr 2011 12:30 PM PDT When we heard that Kaelen designer Kaelen Farncombe’s spring collection was inspired by chasing tornadoes, we had to find out more. Tornado chasing isn’t exactly your standard designer “inspiration trip” fare. But the twisters served as muse to a collection that turned out muted, clean and serene. Fabulous Former Fashionista Intern Jazzi McGilbert Teams Up With Olsenboye Posted: 20 Apr 2011 10:30 AM PDT
I’ve been reading Fashionista since the beginning, and one of my favorite columns from the early days was Jazzi McGilbert‘s “What’s in your Bag?” video series. Jazzi’s such a natural on camera, and she also chose the best subjects. Since moving back from New York to her hometown of Los Angeles, the blogger (www.jazzimcg.com)/stylist has been busy with her own site and plenty of other projects, including a spring video with Olsenboye, where she talks about her style inspirations and even tries on some of the collection’s wares. (Which are available at JCPenney, in case you’ve been living under a rock.) We got an exclusive preview of the video, and also did a little catchup with Jazzi. Fashionista: Congrats on your collab with Olsenboye–what did you like most about the spring collection? Your videos on Fashionista were a huge hit. What have you been up to since you moved back to LA? What’s next for you? Thanks Fashionista! Check out Olsenboye’s complete collection on Jcpenney.com. Posted: 20 Apr 2011 09:50 AM PDT Kate Middleton Shops at Banana Republic: Continuing her tour of high street stores to (ostensibly) shop for her honeymoon, Kate was spotted in Banana Republic buying summer clothes yesterday. Showing amazing discretion, Banana refused to reveal which pieces the future princess purchased. {TelegraphUK} Mom Lets Her Little Boy Try a Leg Wax: After watching his mom and her friends wax their eyebrows, the boy insisted that he wanted to try it. His mom obliged by putting a tiny bit on his leg fluff. The result is eardrum-shattering. (Hey, it's never to early to learn manscaping.) {HuffPo} Dr. Martens Launched a Clothing Line: Riding the current tide of 90s nostalgia, Doc Martens just launched its clothing line, which contains lots of checked dresses. {The Independent} Follow Fashionista on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Joe Zee Gets Harassed; Beefs Up Security On All on the Line Posted: 20 Apr 2011 08:03 AM PDT If you needed another reason to tune into Joe Zee‘s heartwarming reality show on the Sundance channel in which the outsize fashion personality plays fairy godmother to struggling designers here it is: drama. As in, suicide threats and beefed up security drama. On last night’s episode of All on the Line, Joe Zee swoops in to rescue and revive the career of designer Gemma Kahng, who had faded into oblivion after doing millions in business during the ’90s. Zee felt that Kahng’s “creative director” David Victor Rose was doing more harm than good to her business and advised Khan to cut ties with Rose. Kahng followed Zee’s sage advice, canned Rose and churned out an amazing collection which was then picked up by Kirna Zabete. Only Rose didn’t take kindly to being shown the door.
