Good News For Dov Charney: American Apparel Stays Afloat With $15M Cash Injection

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 06:47 AM PDT

Dov Charney’s not going anywhere. At least not anytime soon.

The controversial CEO–who has been accused of sexual harassment by several former employees in recent weeks–has secured financing that will stave off bankruptcy and give the company some breathing room on its debt, WWD is reporting.

The board has approved raising $15 million from a group of Canadian investors, with the option to receive $28 million invested during the next six months, the NY Post is reporting.

Rebecca Minkoff Explains How She Started Her Company From Scratch and Why She Won’t Do a Collaboration With Target

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 06:00 AM PDT

This week, bag-goddess and designer extraordinaire Rebecca Minkoff graciously took time out of her hectic schedule to chat with readers about how she got where she is today–which is to say, how she started a multi-million dollar bag and clothing line (with a soon-to-open brick and mortar store) from nothing. If your schedule was too hectic to tune in, don’t sweat it–Minkoff’s words of wisdom were too valuable to disappear into chat room ether so we’re putting the best nuggets down here:

On breaking into the fashion industry:

The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Fetes Billy Reid, Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo For J.Crew

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 03:49 PM PDT

Last night everyone who is anyone in fashion–from Anna Wintour to Steven Kolb to Mickey Drexler to models and designers galore–packed the J.Crew Men’s shop on Fifth Ave. to celebrate CFDA winner Billy Reid and runners up Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo, all of whom designed capsule collections for the mass retailer. The party theme reflected Reid’s southern heritage–”Sweet Home Alabama” played over the chatter, biscuits and fried chicken were passed around, and spiked sweet tea was served in mason jars.

Even though it’s been months since Reid won the prestigious fashion award back in November, the humble designer still has trouble believing it happened.

“Everyday it's totally surreal,” he told us.

Crazy Beauty Trends of the Future

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 02:30 PM PDT

Cosmoprof, held in Bologna last month (and to be held again later this summer in Las Vegas), is one of the biggest beauty trade shows in the world. In March, it gave over 2,000 companies and exhibitors a chance to show off their wares. And they're definitely not boring.

So what were some of the trends?

Prabal Gurung on Future Design Collaborations and Being Considered for Dior

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 01:08 PM PDT

At last night’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund party at J.Crew, CFDA winner Billy Reid and runners up Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo were all on hand (along with the rest of the New York fashion world) to celebrate the limited edition collaborations they designed for the specialty retailer.

We made a beeline for Gurung, who looked J.Crew-appropriate in marinière-ish top, as this is his first time doing a design collaboration at a lower price point (though we’re still crossing our fingers that there’s some truth to the rumor of a Target collab in the near future). Unfortunately most of his capsule collection for wasn’t on display last night (it rolls out in June–Reid’s is up first in May), but Marissa Webb, J.Crew’s head of women’s design, was wearing a pair of his tuxedo pants and you’re gonna want them. (Remember those tuxedo pants from Spring 2010 that had ties around the ankle? They’re just like those. Only slightly more affordable).

So how does he feel about doing a collaboration?

A New Laser Treatment for Sweating. Or, Rather, for Not Sweating

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 11:50 AM PDT

Despite the fact that we are all, once again, freezing our asses off here in NYC, there's big news in the world of sweat reduction.

ABC News and Good Morning America reported yesterday about a new laser treatment called Axilase, which can supposedly significantly and permanently reduce how much you sweat.

Before you throw away your deodorant, there are a few caveats. It's used for hyperhydrosis, which is a condition in which you sweat excessively, and you have to have failed other more conventional therapies. So if your only issue is that you want to look cute at the gym and not sweat, you're probably not a candidate.

Textbook for Fashionista: Costello Tagliapietra

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 10:46 AM PDT

Fans of the Tumblr blog Textbook, take note: Fashionista has teamed up with the blog's mastermind, John Jannuzzi, to create storyboards for our industry's style stars. (See an archive of his work for us here.)

You’re surely familiar with the work of Costello Tagliapietra: beautifully draped dresses; playful prints with an eco-friendly edge. (PS, their latest collaboration with Uniqlo drops today!) The label is the brainchild of partners Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra. The pair are easily recognizable around town–rarely seen out of plaid or without their suspenders. Their designs remain a bit under the radar but rest assured, these two will be making big moves in the coming years. I personally thinks somebody in a big house that is white should pay some attention. But that’s another post for another day. Aside from their clear talent, these two are just all around stand-up human beings.
