Oscar de la Renta Launches First Fragrance in 10 Years Via Tumblr and Facebook

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 06:51 AM PDT

Storied American fashion house Oscar de la Renta might be known for outfitting ladies who lunch, but it’s also got a tight hold on ladies who read Twitter at lunch.

You can thank @OscarPRGirl, the brand’s Twitter ambassador, for that. In recent months Oscar has further delved into social media, setting up a Tumblr and attracting nearly 120,000 followers on Facebook.

Now, to launch its first fragrance in 10 years, Esprit d'Oscar, ODLR has created a gorgeous Facebook campaign that allows fans to sign up for a free sample of the new scent, which hits beauty counters in two weeks. (All you have to to do is “Like” ODLR to gain access to the offer.) The fragrance is a modern take on the house’s first-ever fragrance, which launched in 1977. And it’s particularly important for the brand, given that it’s the first scent introduced since the house bought back its fragrance license in January 2010.

The Comeback of Inès de la Fressange: The Icon on the Fate of Luxury Brands, Working With Roger Vivier, and Galliano’s Downfall

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 03:20 PM PDT

In the ’80s Inès de la Fressange reigned as the most super of the supermodels. Muse to Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel throughout the decade (until the two had a falling out in 1989) she was, according to the WSJ, the first model to sign an exclusive modeling contract with the house, and later went on to serve as the model for Marianne, the symbol of France.

Today, at 53, de la Fressange is back. She signed on as the brand ambassador for Roger Vivier when the label was revived eight years ago after being acquired by Diego Della Valle and Tod’s group, marked the end of her feud with Lagerfeld by walking at the Chanel spring 2011 show, and just yesterday it was announced that she is the new face of L’Oreal Paris. “I believe in the slogan ‘Because we’re worth it!’” she said in a statement for L’Oreal, “I love those words, which are still perfectly relevant today.”

We got the chance to talk with the legendary model over Paris Fashion Week at Roger Vivier’s presentation about her work for Vivier, her thoughts on the state of fashion and luxury today, her reaction to Galliano’s ousting from Dior, and why she doesn’t like to go to runway shows.

Terry Richardson Strikes Again: More of the Same or a Pre-April Fools’ Prank?

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 01:12 PM PDT

Forget about Robert Duffy. Or Dov Charney. Or Olivier Zahm. Just for a moment. Allegedly Terry Richardson is back on the prowl, hitting on a “freelance model” via IM.

Jezebel reports that Felice Fawn is claiming Richardson asked her if she’d be comfortable fooling around with him in order to get the opportunity to pose for him. This is the IM conversation:

Toronto Fashion Week: America’s Next Top Model‘s Jay Manuel Debuts His Line for Sears Canada

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 12:30 PM PDT

Is this what fashion has come to? Last night, fellow Canadian and host of America’s (and Canada’s) Next Top Model, Jay Manuel debuted his much-hyped collection for Sears. With top dollars spent on splashy campaigns and a media circuit run that would make your head spin, Manuel's new line ATTITUDE left a lasting first impression.

The show, which ran an hour late, opened with a mini-montage that documented Manuel’s deep involvement with the label, from concept to completion. From sketching to sewing, the clip almost had us fooled that Manuel created the pieces himself, but alas his title still read “Creative Director.”

As the lights dimmed and music blared, the first look hit the glossy black runway and the show's “special guest” arrived, veteran model Yasmin Warsame (perhaps Tyra was to busy hitting the books or washing her face). What followed Warsame’s power strut were a string of work wear looks that spoke to the masses. From mundane to matronly, Manuel’s high fashion taste didn’t seem to cross the border.

Trendspotting: Plentiful Peplums

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PDT

It’s market week, which means we’ve been traveling from showroom to showroom to view the fall collections up-close. One trend that won’t seem to die is the peplum waist–not that we’re complaining. This little frill hides what you don’t like and accentuates what you do–designers like Cynthia Steffe and Raf Simons agree.

Penn Badgley, Ginnifer Goodwin, Akon, The Misshapes and More Star in H&M’s Fashion Against AIDS Campaign

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:17 AM PDT

H&M is set to launch a unisex collection on April 26th called “H&M Fashion Against AIDS,” with 25% of proceeds benefiting youth HIV/AIDS projects around the world. To promote the collection, the fast fashion giant wrangled a bevy of young stars from film, TV, and music including Penn Badgley, Akon, Ginnifer Goodwin, Selma Blair, Keri Hilson, Sky Ferreira, Shiloh Fernandez, Nikki Reed, the Scissor Sisters and ubiquitous fashion scenesters the Misshapes.

“When I was growing up, I thought we were all going to get AIDS–it was this big scary disease, but then it seems like people forgot about it, but the disease is still there and very much part of our lives,” Selma Blair said in a release. “It’s a disease that can be avoided. It’s especially tragic when our ignorance keeps us from safety.”

And as for the unisex designs, Penn Badgley digs it: “I like it! I think it’s interesting. It’s like a blank slate, your own style and how you wear it. The clothes don’t wear you as much as you wear them. The style is simple enough that it doesn’t dictate yours.” Each star wore a piece of the collection in their own way to fit their personal style. Scissor Sister’s Ana Matronic wore a peach trench as a dress. Badgley paired his tee with…a hoodie.

Check out behind the scenes images from the campaign shoot.

Erdem on His Floral Obsession, Tilda Swinton, H&M and Kate Middleton

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 08:00 AM PDT

There’s no question that fashion and technology are growing ever closer by the day, but Canadian-British-Turkish designer Erdem Moralioglu takes the concept of digital design a step further than most. Those glorious florals that have earned him a fast following are, as it happens, created entirely by computer. Yesterday afternoon, the bespectacled London-based designer hit Saks Fifth Avenue for a meet-and-greet with shoppers. In between oohing and aahing over the lace-draped looks on display, we pulled him aside to discuss inspiration, possible collaborations, and those Waity Katie whisperings.
